    pool clean after forest fire

thanks for your replies - sorry for the delay in replying but things were a little crazy here trying to clear up. thought you may be interested to see the pictures. does the red look like fire retardant to you? does anyone have experience clearing up after forest fires? although it was like a...

    pool clean after forest fire

Hello All, Í´ve got to clean a pool which was sitting immediately on the edge of an enormous forest fire yesterday. The pool was crystal clear in the morning and now it´s a swamp. Normally when I clear up a dirty pool I add floculante and vacuum when everything´s settled to the bottom...

hot tub heating with heat pump?

thanks for repy jason. i´m no expert on this buy why does a heat pump struggle when the source and destination temperatures get further apart. i thought that the cop was all important and that the cop was greater when the ambient air temp is higher. if the ambient air temp is say 25 degrees C...

hot tub heating with heat pump?

Hi, I have an old hot tub which I´m refurbishing. I´m adding new pumps and a sand filter but need to sort out the heating. I live in a warm climate in Spain and wondered if a heat pump would be suitable as the electricity is so expensive (ie it would be cheaper due to the 4:1 cop). I haven´t...

Thinking about SWG- DIY installable? Best brands/models?

Re: Thinking about SWG- DIY installable? Best brands/models i agree with ping about buying a larger cell. you´ll spend much more money running the pump with a smaller unit.

    pool school swcg question

understood thanks jblizzle. just noticed your tag - very sad about those poor firemen in your part of the world. those wild fires sounded horrendous.

    pool school swcg question

that´s in great condition. you certainly build well on your side of the pond! our gunite pool which is 10 years old sunk by half an inch last year. luckily it hasn´t cracked, yet.

    pool school swcg question

wow, that must have been built well! guess you need a pool over there with this heatwave you´re experiencing.

    pool school swcg question

If I find a calcium problem on a pool surface I usually decrease TA to just below 50ppm to clear the build up of calcium, then increase TA again once it´s disappeared. I´m not disbelieving you people, and I understand that swcg pool chemistry is different, but the 60 figure sounds awfully...

    pool school swcg question

OK think I understand. I don´t have a particular problem with pH rise, although as you said it always rises with a swcg. However, if I was to lower the TA to 80 it would slow down the process of increasing pH and presumably lessen the quantity of acid I use? Many thanks for your replies...

    Solar Pool Covers

There´s an Australian company, Daisy Pool Covers, who export cheap solar pool covers. An agent for them started selling them here in Spain a few years ago saying that they´d last for many years. I thought they looked flimsy so decided not to try them. However, they are becoming very common...

    pool school swcg question

Thanks for the reply. I checked a salt water pool today and the readings were 95 TA and 7.5pH. Normally I wouldn´t add acid yet, but would the experts on here be lowering the TA with those readings?

    pool school swcg question

Hello All, I just read the guidelines on poolschool for swcgs and was interested to see the recommended TA figures at 60 to 80ppm. This appears to be a little lower than normally recommended for non-swcg pools. Can somebody please explain the reason for this? I have experience looking after a...

Cloudy water after adding calcium and alkalinity plus

The alk plus you added - does it say carbonate of soda on the packet? If so, when added too quickly the water can turn milky white. In this case add liquid floculant with the pump running, turn the pump off after the floc has circulated in the pool for ten minutes, don´t use the pool for 12...

    Copper

OK chem geek, i take your point that the forum administrators wouldn´t be wise to recommend copper based algicides to the public. It´s a real shame though as it makes life much easier when used properly, and it isn´t difficult (ie small doses of chelated algicide and pH around 7.2). I was...

    Copper

exactly! it´s the fact that cu makes pool maintenane much more forgiving. it´s great to use to supplement the chlorine, in tiny doses, not instead of it.

    Adding Alkalinity Increaser through Skimmer

if you put the selector valve to "recirculate" then ph+ or ta+ will be smashed up by the pump impellors and won´t cause the pool water to cloud up. if you add ph+ too quickly to the pool surface it can cloud up the pool water (like a white cloud) which can take days to clear.

    Copper

i´m with reynolds on this - bbb sounds great but a little copper helps massively in controlling algae. the only real down side of copper (in what ever form) is slight staining of the pool surface. most pools where i work are gunite and mosaic tiles and the copper only stains the grout slightly...

Another "Is it algae or is it dirt?" thread....

i´ve only seen it on a couple of pools but if there´s a leak on the pipework underground, then dirt surrounding pipe can end up in the pool when the pump is running. You can check if you have the same problem by vacuuming the pool to waste so there´s no dirt on the bottom of the pool, then...

Breakdown of bleach over time by storage temperature

i find that after storing for a couple of months, that liquid chlorine (15%) is still ok for killing off algae blooms. day time temperatures in my garage are around 110F in the summer. do others in the industry find the same?

Breakdown of bleach over time by storage temperature

that´s bad news and much faster than i´d always assumed. i´ve just taken delivery of 80 containers of liquid chlorine which is sitting in my garage. i was hoping to use between now and the end of august. think i´ll get an air con unit for the garage! :hammer:

i agree with the other reply about shocking but also you should check the pH / alkalinity to prevent problems with calcium.

    Replacement Cell Chord

Hello, I posted yesterday about the possibility of building a diy swcg and agree that the prices are crazy. I´m not familiar with the make you mention but your idea sounds fine to replace the wires as long as you can seal everything up afterwards. I guess the transformer reduces the power...

    copper to combat cya

i didn´t think you were permitted to go above 10ppm fc over there (irrespective of the cya level / active chlorine level)? i was surprised that one of the methods described above involved raising the fc to 14ppm every week. sorry if i´m being dumb. i´ll go to poolschool for further reading. :?

    White flakes in pool

I´ve had this problem when the water balance is perfect. The swcg was not the modern self cleaning type and i´d been a little lazy in cleaning the plates of calcium. Once i cleaned the plates there were no more flakes. very apt that smiley, i should have cleaned the plates sooner.
