Should the equipment pad look like this??

How much weight is on those blocks and what are the soils beneath? To me the risk of settlement is greater with smaller bearing surfaces on the earth than with a distributed load on a slab at grade. If one of those 6 blocks settles, you are in for a good time lifting the slab, resetting the...

Leaning pool held in place by railroad ties

I am replying to this (very old) thread since my blog has had a number of hits from my last message in the last week. If folks are still reading, then info is needed. Please forgive me resurrecting such an old thread. 1. We DIYed the retaining wall and ended up installing just over 100 linear...

    New season means pool reno

End of season update... We ended up getting everything finished around the end of August and used the pool through September. We hired a contractor to pull up the rest of the deck after we took 3 tons to the dump. A local pool shop came in and installed a new skimmer, coping, liner and strip...

    Frustration with contractors

An update... New liner is in but thunderstorms have prevented the concrete pour and landscaping work from progressing. Oh well. This will be behind us soon.

    Frustration with contractors

Good news - the PB we signed on with showed up and stripped out the old liner. Yay. Progress!

    Frustration with contractors

Its a 16X32 pool, and the pour is an 8" wide ribbon around th epool. after that I have to find a landscaper to fix the rest. I've negotiatied the PB downwards to $7700. That is some relief, but I will have to do more work. They came out yesterday and pulled out the liner.

    Frustration with contractors

I wish we could do that Cramar, except that in order to prepare for the first company, we have already cut away much of the concrete decking around the pool and it is very exposed right now. Looking at teh $10K bid, DIYing the sucker is looking really appealing, but I just don't have the...

    Frustration with contractors

Well, we finally got someone to commit to the project. New liner, coping and poured concrete deck will be $10,000. Thats $3500 more than the last bid we got, and $4500 more than what we were told at the spring home shows. It would be easier to just fill the sucker in.

    Frustration with contractors

Our 30 year old pool had major issues this spring, so we laid out plans for an overhaul. New landscaping, new deck, new liner, new coping, new plumbing. Today we have most of the landscaping in, and the plumbing complete, but we cannot for the life of us find a pool guy locally who will get...

    New season means pool reno

As many of you kinow, I have been rebuilding our backyard for most of the summer. At this point I am finally ready to work on the pool proper. its kindof like Indiana Jones finally reaching the Arc of the Covenant. the first task in this phase is to cut back the concrete deck from the pool. I...

Time to Dig? ..... Any other suggestions? Game Plan?

Interesting. Tigerflex's spec sheet advises a 2" minimum radius. This may challenge that. Since i have already bought a spool, I have to go with teh material for the install. I may house it inside a more rigid pipe (Like drainage tubing) to soften the radii, and to make replacement easier if...

Time to Dig? ..... Any other suggestions? Game Plan?

Nyholm, as someone who knows less than nothing about pools, is flexible PVC the same as "Tigerflex?" - which I have a spool of in my backyard, just waiting to be installed. If so, can you point me to those discussions outlining its weaknesses? We had black plastic pipe which had turned very...

Time to Dig? ..... Any other suggestions? Game Plan?

We just dug up our lines here in the Toronto area. I think they were maybe a foot below surface. Maybe. Definately less than a full shovel deep. Now we are not in a particularly cold area, but I would guess that we are about the same as upstate NY - unless you are up on a mountain or something...

    Typical plumbing schematic?

Thanks Richard and Duraleigh. The 'third' line was cut (disconnected, abandoned) adjacent to the pump, so it is likely not needed, but I don't want to remove it in case there is an opportunity later on to re-attach the drain line. Right now we are nearing a decision point where I will have to...

    Typical plumbing schematic?

I have a bit of a puzzle to work out... To my simple mind, there should be 2 pipes between our pool shed and our pool. Filtered water, and unfiltered water. We are doing a landscaping/pool maintenance/rebuild project, and in our digging we have managed to unearth 3 lines to the shed. I don't...

    New season means pool reno

Yee-haw - more excitement! OK, before setting into fixing the pool proper, we decided to go ahead with building a retaining wall to hold back the slope in our yard. Although the wall will only be a couple fet high, it should help with the sagging pool deck and allow us to set grades for the...

    New season means pool reno

Thanks Jason. The pool place guys showed up just now while I was home for lunch. I have to give them a fair dose of respect. We explained the being told to drain the pool piece, adn the being told to fill the pool piece. They said they can reset 2 of the corners for us, but there is too much...

    New season means pool reno

Dumb new pool owner problem. The pool store advised to drain the pool down so it would be less work to reset the corners. Taking their advice, I dropped the pool level by 4 ft. (until the shallow end was dry). The pool place called yesterday to advise they will be here 'soon'. In the meantime...

Leaning pool held in place by railroad ties

I am no expert, but we have a similar situation that we are workjing through now. The pool proper is not suffering, but our decks have settled (4" settlement over a 36" run) and the retaining wall has failed. I removed it in the fall with a mattock and chainsaw (where needed). RR ties don't last...

    New season means pool reno

Thanks poolmom. The guys from the pool store were by to quote us a price today, they started off with that they would replace everything. Decks, coping, liner. Ballpark guess was around $5500. I pointed out that we already have a contractor coming to replace the decks, so all we really care...

    New season means pool reno

Hey folks, new to this board and only on year 2 of pool ownership, so I need a little bit of a hand-up if you can afford the time. When we bought this house last year, it came with a pool, which we viewed as more of a liability than a benefit. Surprisingly though, our kids used it a fair bit...
