    Bleach prices 2013

Since Walmart is a national chain, have looked there? I found they actually have liquid chlorine cheaper than bleach. At my local Walmart in Phoenix AZ they have a 2 gallon bundle of 10% liquid chlorine for $6.47 (plus or minus a few cents). equates to: $6.47 / (256 oz * .10 [10% strength])...

    Bleach prices 2013

I'll take 1 gallon of 8.25% bleach as an example at a cost of $3.49 per gallon. Multiply the bottle oz by the percentage/strength of the bleach then device into the dollar amount. $3.49 / (128 oz * .0825) = $3.49 / 10.56 = $0.3304924 (33 cents) per ounce I think its generally accepted that...

    CH Testing -- Light purple

This CH test is driving me nuts, I just can't seem to get it down. I've read the extended kit directions and I believe that I was hitting the fading endpoint so today I just did the alternate method in the footnotes: I got my 25 mL sample, added 5 drops of R-0012 then continued with the...

    Bleach prices 2013

$6.47 is the same price for the 10% HTH chlorine at my local Walmart in Phoenix AZ. I checked Lowes and Home Depot around where I live over the weekend as well and though I don't remember the exact price, I do remember it wasn't better than Walmart.

    Suggestions on my pool water

Wouldn't that high of FC cause the pH test to be inaccurately reported as high? Meaning, he probably has pH lower than 8.2?

Always test water with pump running!

Or maybe the sun "eats" the stuff at the top first? I guess I should start my pump when I test, I usually test when I get home from work and the pump only runs at night.

Tests where Speed Stir not recommended?

Alrighty then, glad I got it since I was measuring FC in the 3-4 range without the Speed Stir and now measuring in the 5.5-7 range without adding bleach.....unless the Trichlor (I know, I'm just going to use up the remaining 3-4 I have left) is increasing it that much.

Tests where Speed Stir not recommended?

I got my Speed Stir the other day and have been using it for all tests in the TF-100 kit. Are there any tests where the Speed Stir is not recommended to be used? I ask because it seems my FC raised when using the Speed Stir even when I didn't add chlorine which leads me to believe that one of...

First round of testing -- any suggestions?

Thanks for the comment about the salt. Water look crystal clear. A few weeks ago it was a swamp, almost literally since we had mosquitoes growing in the pool. I shocked it with calhypo, partly because I didn't know better the pool store recommended it, and it took about weeks to get the...

First round of testing -- any suggestions?

Yes, after reading here I realize I've been Pool-Stored :-) with calhypo. Even the local pool guys (at least the ones I hired in the past) here maintain the pool using the trichlor tabs. I'm planning to use BBB as the liquid chlorine/bleach seems to be a cheaper method. I'm glad to hear TA...

First round of testing -- any suggestions?

So I got the TF-100 today and did my first round of testing. ~75 degree water FC 2 (I added about 1/4 gal liquid chlorine afterwards) CC .5 (first drop turned it clear) pH 7.2 TA 130 CYA 60 When testing CH, I thought I was doing it wrong, as I was keeping track of the drops I thought "this is...

So is there any way to lower CH? Or do you have to drain and refill with no/low CH water?

Shocking and CC relationship -- question frrom newbie

This was essentially my plan once the TF-100 came in. But I have had the same issue with trying to match up the water color with the color chart. The water color was a "neon" yellow that didn't quite match with the chart. I figured that once I was reasonably sure CC was close to 0 I'd use the...

Oh, I thought UV burns the FC only. Good to know.

Shocking and CC relationship -- question frrom newbie

Ignore the signature, FedEx still has my TF-100, hehe. But, assuming a "negligible" CC of .5ppm, wouldn't an OTO test kit essentially report the FC level (I know it test TC) and use less expensive reagents to do so?

Shocking and CC relationship -- question frrom newbie

Shocking and CC relationship -- question frrom newbie

Gotcha. Basically it combines with "stuff" and becomes used up. This also means that CC isn't really an indicator that algae is present, right? Since it can combine with non-algae stuff like ammonia? I take it this is why people have said to shock the pool when CC gets too high. But what...

Shocking and CC relationship -- question frrom newbie

I have finally decided to take control of my pool and have been reading the Pool School and these forums the past few weeks, but I do still have a question regarding the shocking process and how it affects combined chlorine. I *think* I understand the relationship but want...
