pH at ~7.0. corrected. how long to wait and retest

I would learn to be really patient with the CYA test. It takes a lot of chemical to run the test, so I would advise finding the number and then adding the required amount and waiting at least a week if not two before re-checking. IE - If you know you're at 0 and it takes 5lbs of the stuff to...

Installing thru-wall skimmer in Intex - Confused!!

The skimmer you install by cutting into the liner (at least on an Intex pool). So location of inlet/outlet doesn't matter a great deal, though it is probably best to get your skimmer installed a few feet away from the outlet to allow the circulation to bring debris to your skimmer. But you...

    Intex 26x52..SO confused!

This is coming from a guy who was in the same predicament you are in, but a year ago. I have both the Intex 26x52 (I think) and the sand filter that came with it, plus the saltwater system that we purchased separately to go salt: http://www.amazon.com/Intex-54611EG-Kry ... intex+salt If I...

Beginner trying to fix cloudy water

As they suggest, read the pool school. It would appear you need to up your CYA to roughly 30-40. Shock value should be roughly 12 if I recall. Starting adding bleach or liquid chlorine, and maintain 12 until clear. It works. Best place to find chlorine (at least in my local area) is either...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

What exact problems would that cause with a SWG? Only reason I ask, is I assumed mine was broken as it was constantly suggesting it needed more salt, despite adding well over the required amount. Just curious as I am now not sure if it might still work and my TA was way out of range which was...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Well, in all honesty, reducing the TA has just been a part of my weekly process. I've gotten it way down from 300, but it more or less is a simple application of acid and leaving the return pointed to the surface. I just figure it is something I can continue to work out while I work on other...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

So don't even worry about the TA??? I was under the impression that that being that high would cause issues. Definitely working on the first part. Just sucks some times as I continue brush and brush and my vacuuming never seems to produce the results I am hoping for. In fact, my best...

Well, the one I wanted to upload hasn't uploaded, but here is the one I took last night.

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Actually, I was going by what Jason said. Slightly less than shock but slightly more than typical. I generally test the PH when the FC drops into the normal range (5ish). At this point, I have been trying to get the TA down from 300 and am currently at 175. I have a picture that hasn't yet...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Perfect, thanks Jason. Well, just as an update, here are my latest test results: FC - 5.0 (increasing to 10 with 72oz 12.5 chlorine) CC - 0 PH - 7.6 (dropping to 7.0 with 86 oz MA 31.25) (Raising with aeration to reduce TA) TA - 175 CYA ~ 35 CH - 300 -> I suspect I need to lower this? Ideal is...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Well, I lost control of my pool last year, and at the time it was using a SWG. I never was able to get it corrected, so I gave up and figured I'd figure out what to do over the winter, which lead me here. Long story short, I have been dealing with an accumulation of Crud in the water, but I...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Looking for extra feedback here. I have been checking the CC several times over the past week. Always 0. I have been bringing FC up to shock every 2-3 days as I still have a small amount of that debris left (from the picture above, I'd estimate that I have 10% of that kind of junk on the...

Pumping to waste (not as you know it!)

Another suggestion for this is to prime the hose, then plug it, and then drag one end to ground level that is below the water level. I have been doing that a bit to get a lot of debris out, and it is working quite well. I probably need to do that again here in a bit as I am recovering from a...

Installing thru-wall skimmer in Intex - Confused!!

Well, got her done this weekend. Somewhere along the lines, I ended up a little crooked, but it is working great. MUCH better than the hang over the side one that Intex provided with the pool.

Attached image to show what I am dealing with. Water is starting to clear up, but there is a lot of this stuff on the bottom of the pool. EDIT: This pic was taken several days ago, so some of the muck is gone, but I'd guess about half remains.

Installing thru-wall skimmer in Intex - Confused!!

Awesome post! I just received the same skimmer and it is sitting on the kitchen counter, ready for install (hopefully this weekend). Any tips on water level? I assume it runs about up to the halfway mark on the skimmer?

    Welcome to my SWAMP!

Is your water level high enough? I am assuming you have a real skimmer, which if the water is too low, would leave it susceptible to drawing in air as the water waves back and forth. Maybe try raising the water level 2-3 inches and see if it gets better. Add more as needed to finish.

    Welcome to my SWAMP!

It depends on how well your pump works, but I have been find that my net is missing a lot and/or stirring stuff up and not necessarily getting it out of the water. I'd vacuum to waste if you can, as that might get some grime/slime out of the bottom directly without having to let your filter...

    Welcome to my SWAMP!

For what it is worth, I've been getting 6% bleach at Aldi's for $1.29 for a 96 oz jug. I works out to $0.22 per fl ounce CalHypo, which is better than most. Based on the above's suggestion of Menards, I looked it up and my local Menards should have Liquid Pool Shock at 12.5% for 3.99 for...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Well, as an update, I went ahead and attempted to vacuum without the pump using only the suction provided by gravity of the water running downhill. WORKED BEAUTIFULLY!!! I got what I could but visibility was cloudy so I stopped when I stopped seeing the green muck popping up (I had a PVC pipe...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Any opinions on bypassing the inlet screen and running this stuff straight through the pump and out to waste? I believe I can do it with a 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 reducer on the other side of my T-d off PVC. Just not sure if the chunks in that sediment will pass through the pump freely without damaging...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

Ugh, after a long weekend away, and coming home about afternoon yesterday, the weather seemed nice enough to allow me to work a bit at the pool. My TA is slowly coming down. Started at 300, now down to 225. Outlet is pointed up bubbling at the surface, PH is going up and I am bringing it down...

Can't get PH/TA level to stay down

Point the return on your pump up so that it breaks the surface of the water. If you can rig up some PVC, you can create your own fountain near the side of your pool that should do the job. Lastly, I've read of some people rigging up an air compressor to a weighted hose with holes (possibly a...

    Pretty black pool

As I am still a newb, I feel I should offer this suggestion as it was once made to me... No reason to wait to add bleach (liquid chlorine). Get those FC up to shock value when compared to your CYA now, should only take a few minutes to figure your levels and figure how much to add. Anyhoo...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

I add at 5pm, and check at 10pm and it is at or above 10. I suppose it is possible I am not precisely at 15000 gallons, and when I add I am upping it beyond 10, and when I check it could drop 1 or so but still be above 10. Generally speaking though, I've had days where I add at 5pm to get it...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

To be honest, during the week I generally only have time to check it in the afternoon. I have added bleach at 5pm, checked at 10pm, and none was needed. But from 5pm to 5pm, if the day is sunny, it has usually dropped to 3 or 4 if it has been especially sunny that day. From what you're...

    Really high alkalinity (300)...

It's been a while since I added it, but it was at approximately 0-10 and I added about 30 oz, which filled the "foot" portion of my sock. Took about a week or more to dissolve, so I need to test and see how much more will be needed.
