My test, where did the CYA go?

Are you testing the same time of day, in the same sunlight/shade? It should not vary like that without something going on. I know here (I'm in SE Minnesota) I lose some CYA over the winter, but not during the summer when the pool is open and levels maintained.

    Yellow Algae

I'm curious as to how your CYA dropped to 30? Did you remove half of your water? CYA doesn't disipate, the only way to get rid of it is to remove water.

    Winterizing Intex Ultra Frame questions

as far as the sand filter, just unplug it to drain the water, cover the valves on top with a plastic bag and leave it. No need to remove the sand or move the filter inside.

    losing lots of water :(

The low water is what is making it act "like a toilet bowl" . I'd add some water if you want to run your filter/pump. If you have lost that much water, it sounds like you could have a leak somewhere.

Couple of questions since winter is coming

You can come jump in mine, I think it made it up to 68 yesterday. We've had some really cool nites the past few weeks to bring it down to about 64, it's getting closed up this week.

    My new AGP Numbers

You need to get some CYA in there first to maintain the chlorine levels.

Good for you sticking to your 'pool management'. Phosphates are not an issue!

    Self inviting pool guest?

I have my pool to myself all the time. My husband is not a water person. I think in 7 years we've been with a pool, he's been in 3 times. Rarely do I have people over.

    Swimming in Green/Cloudy Water

good luck! It sounds like you are on your way. Our winter cover has the cinch wire, but I also start keeping my bleach bottles end of July. When I close the pool I fill them with water and tie them to the cover. It gets windy here and it keeps the cover from riding up.

My poor doggie has PTSD from the 4th of July fireworks.

I do volunteer work for a animal rescue group and we dread 4th of July, because we always have so many lost dogs in our care that got scared of the fireworks, panic and ran. Always put indoors, make sure windows are closed (quite a few jump through the screens) and if anything turn on the radio...

Just bought a house with a pool this Monday

Don't use those pucks! You don't want your cya to get any higher.

Rainwater filled pool and turned it brown

Too bad you can't send some of that rain north to southern MN. We are so dry.

    AGP deck suggestions

Our deck is even with the rails, with about a 2 inch gap at the most between the deck and the pool rails. Basically so I can get the winter cover between the deck and rails.

Help ants everywhere climbing up the pool and diving in

I use cornmeal. Grocery store cornmeal in a the can. You should be able to find where the hills/nests are, at least somewhat of the path. Sprinkle it over the area and around it. They eat it, but can't digest it.

Just back washed needs it again

I would start the shock process now before it gets any worse. The fact that you are seeing cloudy water and your cc's have increased even though they are at .5 .

Adding muriatic acid to above ground w/ vinyl liner

I dilute it. Only because I'm afraid of splashing it if I try to pour directly in the pool. I'm not the most graceful an I can pour into a bucket of water that's lower than my waist better than pouring from the jug above my waist (I'm short) into the pool.

    Help With Cloudy Water!!

I use skimmer socks 100%, it's the only way to get that fine dust. Living in the country there's dirt blowing all the time with the fields right there, gravel roads, etc... the filter will not get that really fine stuff. I probably use the same one all season. Rinse it every day or more often...

Toxic Public Pool Sends Kids to Hospital

Well, then you best not let your kids swim in any kind of pool and stick to lakes and rivers. Active ingredient: Chlorine = Sodium hypochlorite, Bleach = Sodium hypochlorite. No matter what you call it, it is the same. You just may get it in different concentrations say from a pool store...

I hope someone can help me out!

Yes, you need a good regeant test kit. The pool store will probably not have them. You can get Muriatic Acid at Home Depot and will probably be cheaper than the pool store.

Purchased new pool, trying to get chemicals inn check.

Bleach, that's for the most part all you need. Possibly Baking Soda or Borax for the PH and TA, but I'd wait until you can test accurately. Read the Pool School and know what your levels should be and when you get your test kit you'll be ready to roll.

Algae or Just Pollen and or Dirt?

My take on it would be if all your levels are good and the water is passing the OCLT, I would say it is dirt. Rain will pull the dirt from the air, wind will blow dirt in. I'm sure there will be others along to give you some ideas to check.

Another green swamp for you guys

So, while you are waiting for your test kit, get out the leaf rake and skimmer and remove all the debris, you need to get that all out of there. Make sure you scoop the bottom good for any junk down there. Then you'll be ready to start adding chlorine.

    Tabs and PH dropping

Also just using bleach is much cheaper than the pucks or 'shock treatments'. I work everyday, the pool gets taken care of when I get home. I turn the pump on, change clothes, add bleach, done. Pump gets turned off before I go to bed. As they said, if you can turn a jet to break the...

    Balancing water

Get the TF-100 or Taylor Kit. It will help you get your water balanced and stay balanced. A basic kit or strips won't do that. It's an ongoing process. You need to know what your CYA level is to accurately determine how much chlorine you need on a regular basis. The 'test at night/test in...

    Tabs and PH dropping

Wow! Being snide is not going to get you help. Can you do a fountain type without it arching or whatever so the cooling down won't really happen? Almost like turning a return jet towards the top of the water, causing lots of bubbles. Does that make any sense.

    New pool owner Bleach question.

Doubt if the pool store is going to be cheaper than the grocery or discount store. Though the pool store may carry 12% and you just have to do the math on cost to see how it compares.

    Using chlorine over the winter

Our winters in MN should be comparable with yours in Canada, you may be a little warmer in Toronto. I've never had an issue opening to a green pool, may be a little dirt that settled but never green. I make sure all leaves and such are out of the pool. Vacuum it good, add 1/2 bottle of 60%...
