Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

not plaster. Pebble tech is light brown. Well, Maybe the fact that no one has ever seen this is a good sign? Maybe it isn't something important breaking down?

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

The only changes I have recently before this occured was I put in new cartridge filters, so yes; the flow probably improved some. I also added borates to the pool. Maybe the acid I added to counter the borates knocked them loose? Maybe the borates somehow knocked them loose? I followed the...

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

I have found about three. This first time I found two at once. This last time I found 1 and it was about a week after the first find.

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

I looked at the pool cleaner and the intake hole is too small to suck these up without crushing them, so I don't think it is coming from there.

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

I use a hayward automatic pool cleaner.

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

Correct: skimmer basket is by pool, but they haven't been found there. In pump basket on equipment pad; yes. I have found about three (some were broken into pieces so I am estimating). Pipe is 2" I think. Equipment pad is about 20 feet from pool. They are always the same size; I think. As...

Mystery object found in pre-pump basket: Any ideas what this is?

I keep finding these in the basket that is just before the pump (not the skimmer basket). I have found about three of them. They appear to be made of graphite and have a white residue on both sides that I'm not sure what is made of (epoxy maybe?). They break very easily, are very light, but...

Got it. Thanks for the replies, and thanks to everyone for the help.

CC level is 0. Water is sparkling crystal clear. But they have been like that the whole time, even before shocking started.

Constantly adding acid since starting the BBB. ????

I'm no expert, but my TA is 90, slightly lower than yours, and I add about a third of a gallon (14% strength) every week. So with your TA at 120, and with such a huge pool, what you are adding may be about right.

Overnight nuking a success! May be helpful to others

If you read my recent posts, you know that I had been shocking for 2 weeks, feeling like I was spinning my wheels because I had to go to work and couldn't keep it from falling below shock level. I had managed to decrease my OCL from loss of 6 to loss of 2. In my most recent thread, Shane...

Shock process for people with day jobs?

It has been a bit strange. Last year after several partial drains and refills I got it down to 45 and it stayed there consistently. This year at opening it was at 40, which seemed a bit odd, but I figured maybe I had more splash-out than I realized or something. I tested it a few days ago and...

Shock process for people with day jobs?

A little of both. At first I was just testing after the sun went down, figuring that was a good base-line, then I noticed how much I was losing even after sundown and I started feeding it bleach even after sundown and then testing before bed time. I'm getting the sinking feeling I've been...

Shock process for people with day jobs?

Poolmom: Yes, I am shocking in the evening, but at "normal schock levels" does bumping it higher do any good? I assumed shock level was shock level and that was it. Bad assumption?

Shock process for people with day jobs?

Funny you should mention that Richard. I am a teacher at an art school! Why didn't I think of that? Seriously though: So am I correct in understanding that shocking like this still gradually chips away at the problem even if it dips below shock level for a couple of hours?

Richard: I could pay them to haul away the all the bleach jugs too!

Shock process for people with day jobs?

I was just wondering: I have been shocking my pool because I am not passing the OFC loss test (losing 2 ppm overnight). But I have to go to work! So I bump it up very high in the morning before I leave, but when I return home, the FC is always below shock level. It seems the higher I raise...

    Bumping up CYA

A quick question: If your CYA is a bit low (20), is it feasible to bump it up by just starting to use dichlor for a bit until it comes back up? Or is it to hard to control the level this way?

    Strange Chlorine loss

Okay, if I shouldn't round, then I will say the CYA was 40. It came out closer to 40 than to 45 every time I read it. I do appreciate all the help. Even just hearing that OCL with clear water is not uncommon at least lets me know that I'm not going crazy.

Yes, CC has always been 0. Never changed.

    Strange Chlorine loss

Sorry: I should have posted standard test results at the beginning: Yes, I have been brushing, even though there is nothing to brush. The test results: Not sure what to post because this has been over a long period of time. The results before all this happened and everything was...

    Strange Chlorine loss

Ping: That is very helpful. Good to know that this has happened to someone else, and you have a time-reference for how long it took to fix. Thanks! Oh, and I need to clarify: the 3ppm loss was when the cover was not on. When the cover was on, it was less than half that, and only during the...

    Strange Chlorine loss

Yes, 43 was an a slight rounding up from 40. I was getting "around 40", but to my eye it seemed "on the high end of 40", so I tried to round it up just a bit to be on the conservative side (I run my FC on the high end of recommendations and of any estimation). Very hard to be precise with this...

    Strange Chlorine loss

I have been getting some very strange chlorine readings in my pool, and I have run out of ideas. So I'm turning it over to the sound advice of you all here. I will try to make a long story as short as possible. I use a Taylor Test Kit. MY FC I normally keep about 6, based on my CYA of 43. I...

    One annoying little number...

Hmm...I just remembered this quote from the extended directions article: "The precision of the measurement is plus or minus one drop when up to 10 drops of titrant are used, or plus or minus 10% of the final reading, when more than 10 drops of titrant are used." If this is true, then my...

    One annoying little number...

Well, here are the results from last nights OCLT, making sure that I used plenty of powder so there was a small amount of undissolved powder on the bottom: Last night: 2 tests. Both counted 31 drops. FC=15.5 ppm This morning: 4 tests. Test one: 28 drops FC=14ppm // Test 2: 30 drops FC=15ppm...
