Low Salt in water after winter

Thanks. I didn't see the other thread that you referenced. We had a ton of rain this winter/spring. I have just never seen it dilute so much (3400 down to 1700).

Low Salt in water after winter

Moved from here. Same issue here - just opened and my salt reading on the SWG was VERY low - like 1700. Every year I usually have to put in about 160 pounds or so, but this seems kind of strange. Is it conceivable that the pool could lose that much salt content over the winter? I assume I'll...

    Heat Siphon won't start

Yes - it took a while for the repairman to come out, but it turned out that there was a small freon leak, which I guess was there all last summer, but caused the freon to completely leak out over the winter. The pipe was patched, more freon added, and this morning, the pool is 82 degrees, so...

    Heat Siphon won't start

I have the analog model - no display. The only available part to tinker with is the thermostat knob. That's it. No other switches or anything. I highly doubt it's the electric hookup since nothing changed from last summer except turning the circuit breakers off and then back on again.

    Heat Siphon won't start

Just opened the pool last week, got the water balanced, turned on my SWG, and then went to turn on my Heat Siphon heat pump and it wouldn't start. I got it last year and it worked great all last summer. I called the company and the woman told me it's most likely either electrical connection or...

    Just opened

Hi - I just opened this week too, after having a TFP last summer. I was "shocked" to get the following test numbers: FC = 0 CC = 0 pH = 7.2 TA = 60 CYA = 70 Salt = 3200 Last summer, I battled the pH and TA for a good month or so because the SWG kept my pH rising all the time. I expect that...

Getting tank lid back on DE filter

It is above the pool water level. That makes a lot of sense - thanks for the tip! I hate to have all that water splash out against the foundation of my house....

Getting tank lid back on DE filter

The O-ring was in pretty good shape. It's not flattened at all, and there aren't really any visible cracks. What's odd is that it shrank over the winter while in my shed. In any case, I'll probably try to re-lube it and use the lube liberally to get a better seal. Is there a way to drain the...

Getting tank lid back on DE filter

I opened my pool yesterday and had the same issue described here, only my o-ring somehow shrank over the winter. I lubed it up pretty well with Magic Lube (from the pool store), and then had a heck of a time getting it stretched out enough to sit in the groove from the lower half of the DE...

    Proper water level?

We've had a lot of rain lately - a few inches - and it's raining now. I usually keep the water level about an inch below the top of the skimmer (I think I read that somewhere), but when my pump kicks on in about two hours, the water level will be over the top of the skimmer because of the rain...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

I'm a few days behind you I think - I've only put in two quarts of acid and even though my pH dropped to 7.2 last night (and back up to 7.5 already this morning), my TA test still took 12 drops to turn red. It might be 115 or so, but still hasn't really made a move down from where I started...

    Shocking frequency

I'm not sure how I missed that article (shocking your pool). That had all the info I needed. Sorry 'bout that. It didn't come up on the search that I did last night!

    Shocking frequency

That was easy, and the answer I was hoping for. Thanks!

    Shocking frequency

This may seem like a fairly simple question, but I couldn't find an answer on any of the forums. I'm using my SWG and holding the FC around 4 without any real trouble. My CC has been less than 0.5 and typically measures 0. My pool is clear with no algae at all, and has been that way for at...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

Thanks Waterbear - you know I read that post of yours on how to lower TA about two months ago when I first found this website and was converting from Baquacil. I even printed it out. Of course, it's in a drawer somewhere and I forgot about it.... At the time, I had bigger fish to fry...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

I didn't check pH after adding the acid last night. I will try that tonight. The pool calculator says 32 ounces for my pool (one quart) to lower pH from 7.7 to 7.2. If TA only drops by -8 with this addition, I'm going to need a lot more muriatic acid to drop my TA by 50ppm. Here are my...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

That's what I added last night - four cups (a quart). How long does the acid take to affect the pH? I mean, it's possible that last night's addition moved it down, but then it came right back up again. Are you aerating constantly too, or is the pH coming back up on its own? I guess I'll...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

My pump is original to the pool (nine years old maybe?) and has probably seen better days. It wouldn't surprise me if I only get another season or two out of it anyway. It just looks really weathered and makes funny squeaking noises when it first starts up. That being said, it still performs.

New SWG and pH is on the rise

Whoops. I poured VERY slowly into the skimmer (thankfully). My heat pump is titanium, so I'm okay there. What kind of damage would occur with the pump seals? I assume if I did any damage, the pump would have been leaking or making funny noise this morning, right?

New SWG and pH is on the rise

Well that explains why the guy at the pool store asked me if I only wanted one gallon. I guess I'll be going back for more this weekend. How high was your pH when you started? The pool calculator basically said that one quart would reduce my pH to 7.2 and the TA -8. It's possible that the pH...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

Last night I bought a gallon of 31.45% muriatic acid and poured one quart into the skimmer (to lower my pH down to 7.2 from 7.7 or 7.8). My TA was 120. I also pointed the jets up at the surface for aeration and went to bed. This morning, the pH is still 7.8 and the TA is still 120. Does...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

"If your TA is to high your pH will rise to above 8.0! If your stabilizer is too low it will indirectly lead to faster pH rise AND your pool won't hold FC." So, it sounds like I need to get myself some muriatic acid this weekend or else my pH will continue to go up. It's been holding at 7.8...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

Yes, I have read waterbear's sticky on water chem for a SWG. I just wanted to see if it was possible that my pH would keep rising, or whether it just moved up one time because of the new SWG and would stop at 7.8. Assuming I need to add muriatic acid to lower the TA and the pH, I was looking...

New SWG and pH is on the rise

I converted from Baquacil to BBB this year and my pH held at 7.5 for about two weeks after the conversion. Three weeks ago, I added the Aqua Rite SWG, and it's working beautifully, but my pH is somewhere near 7.8. My TA has been at 120 since the conversion as well. Is it time to add muriatic...

Philadelphia conversion - not nearly as bad as I had feared!

Okay - I've kept the FC level up for a few days. Here are the numbers as of this evening (salt will go in the pool tomorrow). FC = 12.5 CC = 0.5 pH = 7.5 Salt = 590 CYA = 60 TA = 140 CH = 50 I haven't put any bleach in since yesterday morning, and that was only about 3 quarts to bring FC up...

Philadelphia conversion - not nearly as bad as I had feared!

Well, it rained here all day and my FC held at 15ppm from last night, and is still 15ppm tonight. Last night I added 8 lbs. of CYA, and the level seemed to be 70ppm this morning. The "bad" news is that my CCs went from 0.5 up to 1.5 during the day. I was hoping that I was going to get away...

Philadelphia conversion - not nearly as bad as I had feared!

So, according to the pool calculator, I need almost 12 pounds of stabilizer, and almost 480 pounds of salt for my SWG. I added 5 lbs. of stabilizer and then brought my FC back up to 15. CCs are 0.5. I was going to add the rest of the bucket of CYA (another 3 pounds) tonight, and then...

Philadelphia conversion - not nearly as bad as I had feared!

So, keep the FC at 15 for a few more days until the CCs are zero for a few days - how much CYA do I add? I mean, what CYA level should I shoot for while I'm holding FC at 15? Can I also drop my pump/filter on-cycle down to 12 hours now? It's been running 24/7 for two weeks.

Philadelphia conversion - not nearly as bad as I had feared!

Now that my conversion seems to be finished, I need to add CYA, but I'm not sure what to do. Last night's numbers were FC = 8, CC = 0, and this morning, FC = 8, CC = 1. So far, I have not put any CYA in. I'm having my SWG installed on Friday, so I have a week to get the water completely...
