I would switch these two steps around....at 20 CYA shock level is minimum 10 FC, at 30 it's rises to a minimum of 12.

OCLT held steady at 5.5 this morning. Tested again tonight and am down to 1 FC which will need 127 oz. of 8.25% to bump back up to a target of 4 FC. When my CYA reagent arrives, I'll test again and try to get my CYA up to around 40 with the dichlor.

Raised FC to 5.5 and will check in the morning to see if I need to shock. Why does it seem to rain every time I try to do this? Thanks!

Thanks guys.... Had to order some more reageant from Dave for the CYA test. I'll just keep adding bleach daily until it arrives and before I think about the doing the OCLT.

Don't stress about it. I was just like you last weekend ( no test kit, what? put bleach in my pool!?!?, the pool store said I need to spend how much again?). Now after I read pool school, the tf100 arrived and butt load of bleach later, my pool looks awesome and I know that I am in control.

I was told that it was ok to swim in a pool with chlorine up to shock level. I passed my OCLT yesterday and FC was at 16 and had 4 swimmers in the pool for about 5 hours. I can assure you, there was no green hair or ruined bathing suits.

I wouldn't say 4 days was a very long time. The only advice I would have, only being a novice, is when beginning the shock process, as long as your filter is turning over properly, is to test maybe every half hour instead of hourly. Whatever was in my pool was turning the FC into CC almost...
