    Summerville SC says "HI"

it's algae that builds a "shell" and attaches to all surfaces under the water line. It's crazy weird. the only way to diagnose is to get scrapings of the "shell" in a glass jar, add distilled vinegar and wait until the foaming stops. If it's sand algae, you'll see a coating of very healthy green...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

This turned out to be sand algae. It's a new problem in my area. If you look at my numbers in the beginning of this post, yup 4 years ago when it started, you'll see the numbers were within range of good. This type of algae builds a shell from calcium, even if it's on the low side. I never got...

Hi Everyone! It's been a very long time since I've posted anything, so reintroduction only seems appropriate. I love this site and the information available from all the great people here. I have been using the pool calculator every swim season without fail. Ya'll are awesome!:lovetfp:

    Umbrella- Crank or Pulley?

I vote crank. I had the pully and I'm kind of short. 5' 3". I could get the pin set in if I streached and tippy toed but if the wind picked up quickly I had a difficult time getting the umbrella down fast!! Ours was anchored to the wood deck. It has been replaced with a crank . The...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

Up-date.. 11:25 pm. est. Things are looking much better. After 22 hours of adjusting the chlorine to keep it at shock, it has finally stayed at 19 since 4 pm this afternoon. The scaling is starting to lighten up and the "dust" on the pool bottom has turned from white to brown. I've been sweeping...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

Do I need to worry about my PH going up (7.8) while I'm holding my shock at 19ppm?? or is it just because of the high chlorine?

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

:) Thanks!! I've dropped the ph to 7.2 with MA.. brought the CYA up to apx 30. Got the chlorine up to mustard shock. 19ppm. and i'm losing 10 ppm per hour. I started the shock at 6pm and it's 10pm now. Dang!! The water looks so clear! I have NO idea what got in the pool... but it's gotta be...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

Thanks duraleigh, It seemed as though the probem only got worse as I was trying to clean and figure it out this last week. We've had 3-4 downpour thunderstorms these past few weeks.that put enough water in the pool to make it RUN OVER! and I'm not talking about just the skimmer throat...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

Thanks for the quick replies! My PH, it's a 3 drop acid requirement to get it to 7.2. as low as the test will measure. so isn't the test about correct? Will the 1/2 to 1/2 test work on PH?

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

Here are the photos.. White lines show direction of water flow. ][/img] Down side of pool to bottom. Darker stripes to the right are where I scrubbed the liner. The center of the pool shows spots where I scrubbed it like crazy. If I brush this pool any harder I'm gonna have arms like Arnold...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

I'll post a photo a.s.a.p. This white hard stuff showed up all over the bottom of the pool very quickly. It won't come off unless you literally pick it off and the pool wouldn't hold chlorine over night, even at 15ppm shock levels. I'm finding it quite interesting that I have a chlorine reading...

calcium scaling in vinyl pool .... bad :(

HI Everyone!! It's been quite a while since I had to ask any questions but it seems I have a hideous calcium problem. Long story short... I let "others" tend to the pool. :hammer: I'm in the process of refilling after draining out 3/4 of the pool so I don't have a CYA reading as I'll just have...

    dry chlorine

Hi Swimgirl I'm aware of the calcium raise and have a reading of 100 right now. We have been getting alot of rain from "Fay" and our regular seasonal downpours so I'm not too worried about the calcium raising too fast. I've been having to drain or use the extra water for vacuuming to waste and...

    dry chlorine

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I just purchased 100# at a very low price because the bottled bleach in our area has gone up in price. Lg bottle 6%(182 oz.) about $3.50. Thanks again.

    lowering TA and chlorinating

Thanks JasonLion, Have only dealt with a one time downpour and that was the end of last season. Will add more bleach before the rains come. Won't hurt anything if it's a blow-by. Just wasn't sure if this was gonna totally mess up the pool.

    My numbers Thanks to TFP!

Congrats!! hope I too can have numbers like yours but alas, I have opened my containers of "pool asprin" and trichlor shock and need to pawn them off on some unsuspecting E-Bayer or yard sale them. Hope all stays well with you and remember..."5 min. a day to keep ahead of your pool." (quote not...

    lowering TA and chlorinating

It's 11:10 Here in Charleston and we are under a Tropical Storm warning. What should I do about my pool if we get the possible 4-6 inches of rain, 30 mph wind etc... First time dealing with this for me. An suggestions ??

    lowering TA and chlorinating

I don't know about your experience with acid but mine "smokes" as I pour it into my measure cup..Bleach can burn my hands a bit so "burn + smoke = poof " let one dissipate before adding another. Just my humble opinion. Charleston Dawn

    lowering TA and chlorinating

Thanks for the order. I read the "tacky" in POOL SCHOOL about lowering TA and it didn't say anything about chlorine. I will keep you posted if ya'll are interested.. Thanks again you are all great!!

    lowering TA and chlorinating

what should be done first. chlorine or MA?? I know i need to wait at least an hour between the two but if chlorine is going to raise PH + TA then should I add the Bleach, take a reading, Add the MA, take a reading, check FC?? Or not worry about the FC for now??

    lowering TA and chlorinating

My readings only went up after i added the bleach, this is what has me stumped. I took a reading after it rained and thats the second set of numbers. Will bleach raise my numbers that quickly??

    lowering TA and chlorinating

    Hi Everyone!! TEAL POOL WATER

:-D Thank you for the prompt reply Jasonlion, and you are correct about the FC level, I was keeping it about 3 (suggested safe level on cheesy OCO/PH test chart :hammer: ) but have noticed on pool calc that I should keep it higher. Will shock to 16 and keep it there until problem is resolved...

    TEAL POOL WATER

Hi All, Thank you all for the information in these Forums! I have a algae problem that I just can't get a grip on. I've read and tested and learned that this can be quite a balancing act in the beginning of the season. We had a 'pea soup" pool from the winter so the entire pool was drained...
