Hayward narrow skimmer v.s. wide mouth skimmer

I have a 24' x 4' above ground swimming pool. When I bought the house it originally had a "standard" hayward skimmer. Recently I found the skimmer started to separate from the pool wall. I found after removal that the gasket had failed allowing water to get to the pool wall and cause a...

Easy for water to get into new motor (tripping GFCI).

I don't have the exact model numbers. But my old A.O. Smith motor was the one with a black plastic cap on the bottom of it. I would pull the cover to clean out the strainer basket. Water would get on the motor etc. The motor would start up with no problem. The new motor seems to be very...

How do commercial entities manage their pools (i.e. water parks)

I've visited six flags a few times in my area. I've been to the water park. It has quite a huge pool. I imagine millions of gallons of water. One thing I notice is the water seems pretty highly chlorinated. You can stand next to the edge of the pool and small chlorine? The only time that...

Does the skimmer weir (door) have any purpose?

So I have a hayward standard skimmer. When I bought the house the skimmer weir was missing. I bought a new weir and placed it in. I noticed it requires a higher water level. It seems it dose something to the water, almost like restricts water coming into the skimmer?

The proper way to repair a hole in the liner.

So I have two small holes (maybe the size of a quarter) in my liner. I used the hth liner repair kit. It appears to work quite well. When applied underwater the water pressure seems to hold it in place. It actually forces it's way down into the hole enough where it creates a tight seal. I...

    Finding exact quantity of water.

So I have a 24' round 4' deep pool. however, I notice the pool floor is not completely flat. It actually gets deeper as you get towards the center. I've always been doing the calculation based that I have 13,500 gallons. But I know it's more than that.

Is a super low GPM pump better than a higher one?

So here's the deal, I got a new filter (filter details in signature). When I installed the new filter coincidentally my pool pump blew (posted a thread about this a while back). So while I ordered a new pump I placed a shallow well pump (3/4 hp) 9.2 gpm pump as a substitute. This pump was...

What kind of motor does the "newer" variable speed perm magnet pumps use

See how expensive they are. It seems to me much of the expense is in the fact that they have a digital computer circuit and a perm mag motor. Is the motor simply a DC "type" treatmill motor. Because if this is the case you can get them pretty cheap and then use a Full Wave Rectifier to the motor.

    Is this worth it.

It looks like a flo-matrix. At least there are some good parts. I'm assuming the winding is somewhat bad if it keeps tripping the breaker. Maybe I can just remove the ground (he he he). http://smd.craigslist.org/spo/4586194661.html

    Dual pump setup for redundancy

I was wondering do any of you have a setup where you have two pumps. One always running, and a second in standby, in case the other fails? I have a 1HP pump, but I see a few 3/4 HP on craigslist for dirt cheap. I was thinking of getting one and plumbing in with valves. I can simply turn the...

How often do you need to change your water?

So I've maintained my pool for 3 years now. However, I realized that I never change my water!! I balance and chlorinate using the BBB method? Is it even necessary to change the water? How often should the water be changed?

    Pool Motor blew up

So I switched on my pool pump. I saw red sparks shot out the back and my GFCI tripped. I reset the GFCI and turned the motor back on, this time it came on but moved slowly as well as smoke was coming out the back.. I was thinking it was a capacitor or something. I took the motor apart and...

    Possible Internal Sand filter leak

I have a Hayward GM series sand filter 1.2 effective filter area. I notice when I remove the clamp and pull the entire valve body off the tub, the "Main pipe" that goes down into the sand fits loosely onto the valve. I stirred up the sand and reassembled the filter. Upon starting the pump...

When you shock your pool does it go cloudy before it gets crystal clear

I had a minor algae bloom. The green went away and i can see my feet in the bottom (4 feet deep). but the water doesn't easily go crystal clear. I was told by someone that when adding chlorine too much will tend to make the water cloudy. When the chlorine gets to a low level it will be clear...

How long before I can test CYA after adding CYA to my sand filter

I have zero CYA. I added 3 lbs of powdered 100% CYA to my 13,500 gallon above ground pool. Based on the pool calculator I should add about 4.5 lbs. The instructions say to wait 24hours, but I read here that I should wait about a week. I added directly into the intake and the pump has ran...

Need advice on new huge sand filter to replace my puny filter

I have a 14,000 gallon above ground pool. It uses a older Hayward sand filter "GM series high flow". It has a effective filteration rate of around 1.2 which I was told is very small. As a result to keep my water clear I have to run the pump 24/7. I put it on a timer once where I had it cut...

    Hayward CL100 Automatic Chlorinator

I'm looking at this for the first time. It holds 9 lbs of Trichlor tabs!!! I'm used to adding the tabs to my skimmer basket. What's the difference??? Can I save on tablets by using this device? Is it just a convenience device.

    Identify this Hayward Filter

http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org/for/4298646222.html I'm looking to get this. I have a 24' round pool (roughly 14,000 gallons). The filter I have (I was told) is too small. I'm supposed to have a 2.6sq ft filtration rate. The filter I have is only a 1.2 sq ft. Thanks

    Slightly cloudy pool

So When I started up my above ground pool this year I did the regular stuff (The things I learned from this site). I started up my filter and ran it continuously. I then put in enough bleach until I reached my shock level. I kept doing this until the water became crystal clear. I then ran...

I don't have the manual or documentation. It says "Hayward GM Series" "High flow filteration". It's a sand based filter. I want to replace all the sand with new.... I can bareley make out the model number It says 2XXXXX. Is there a general rule for this. Also who sells the sand?

Above ground "Bermuda Pool" and pool covers

So here's the deal. I have an above ground 24' "Bermuda pool". It's one of those pools with the white railing and catwalk around the edges. Therefore, you can't really anchor the cover over the pool. I bought a pool cover online for a 24' pool, it came with around 4' overlap. I installed...

    Dual Filters

I was curious is it any benefit if I were to place two filters inline with each other (sand filters). Or If I were to place them in parallel using a V pipe? Is there any real benefit???

    Repairing A Hayward spider gasket

So my Hayward was acting funny. It was draining as well as filtering. I lost water by the next day. I ordered a new gasket online. However, I did some investigation to see what was wrong with the old gasket. I think many people (like myself) assume the gasket must be bad and must be...

    Pool Pump Timers

I just have a standard switch for my pump. I have to turn it off/on during the day. I have a Hayward sand filter and a 1hp 115 vac pump. 13,500 gal 24' above ground pool. I'm looking at digital and mechanical timers? Which ones tends to be the best?

Safe way of Adding CYA without over adding?

I tested for CYA using the CYA reagent and vial with the black dot on the bottom. I transfered the liquid to the vial and noticed the water was so clear I could see the black dot even if i filled it beyond the graduation level on the vial (30). So this indicates I have at least <30 ppm of CYA...

    Test numbers for green pool?

So My test kit didn't arrive. I got a HTH drop test from the store. I tested the water, i'm getting the following. CYN < 30 (not measurable, when I put it in the tube I still could see the black dot in the bottom of the vial when filled beyond the marking. I bet if the tube was longer i...

    Pump pressure at 15 psi

I have a hayward GM series and a 1hp pump. The connections and piping is in good order. I backwashing the unit, however, it seems the operating pressure is at 15 psi. I don't know if this is normal. This is for a above ground 24' pool (48" deep). This is the first time using this filter and...

Proper plumbing procedure for a 24' (48" deep) above ground

I bought a home with an above ground. I'm noticing the way the pump and filter are hooked up and I'm not too sure about the procedures and connections. 1. Inside the pool the discharge and skimmer box are about the same level, I notice there are no valves on the pipe that runs from the...
