How to test Compool 3800 TS-5L temperature sensor

Anyone know how to test a Compool 3800 TS-5L temperature sensor? Are they resistive, and what would nominal resistance be at 60-70F? I'm getting an intermittent dreaded "Err1" on the Compool, and sometimes erratic temperature reports. I suspect the problem is the wiring between the controller...

2.70 total HP vs. 2.20 total HP for a spa

You can convince me that a pool motor runs over rated HP, but you can't convince me that this is a good idea. If it were my pump, I would measure the current at maximum load, calculate the actual HP, and size a motor with a rated HP above this number. There is no reason for the OP to replace the...

2.70 total HP vs. 2.20 total HP for a spa

I disagree with the other poster on the notion of running the motor over rated HP. Simple way to resolve this -- measure the running current and we'll know the load. If the load is under 2HP, then don't worry about it.

2.70 total HP vs. 2.20 total HP for a spa

I'm going to admit here that I'm not a pool-pump expert, but I do understand motors, and this makes no sense. If a pool pump is a continuous load and the motor is being run above the rated output into the "service factor" territory on a continuous basis, then, from the point-of-view of the motor...

2.70 total HP vs. 2.20 total HP for a spa

The Service Factor (SF) of a motor is the amount that it can be periodically overloaded without damage. For example, if a 2HP 1.3x SF motor is spinning a table saw blade, you can transiently overload it to 2.6HP while you're cutting. Most of the time the blade sits idle waiting for wood...

Not mine, but I wouldn't mind if it were. A hidden pool?

This reminds me of my Connecticut childhood. A friend had a pool which was built without permits; building it with permits would have caused the property tax assessor to notice and increase the property tax due. Every fall, after closing, we would build a wood frame inside the structure of the...

Please help with puzzling staining problem...

Already have solar on the pool. During most of the year, I can accomplish the filtering during the normal solar heating run, so it would seem that there would be little benefit to a low speed for filtration-only, since I don't need to do more circulation than that required to heat it. What...

Please help with puzzling staining problem...

I'm going to look again at adding a heater bypass. My concern about cutting too much PVC is making future heater replacement harder (the return lines disappear into the concrete pad). Obviously I need to install some good unions and buy spares of the same type. There is no other metal in the...

Please help with puzzling staining problem...

What's the purpose of a variable speed pump in a simple pool like mine, i.e., where I don't have a spa or other features that need higher flow. Why variable instead of just smaller? When would each speed be used? I suppose a smart controller could periodically turn on the pump for five minutes...

OT: my solar PV system I realize you're probably talking about my photovoltaic system, but I figure'd I'd break this discussion into two posts to keep them shorter. For those of you who haven't seen it, http://www.solarwarrior.com/ . There were a number of design decisions forced by the site...

OT: About my solar pool system One of the first things I learned was that I should have installed solar heat on the pool when we built it (it was a retrofit a few years later) :-) If I did the solar on the pool again, I would seriously consider a direct-DC driven pump. With my low...

Please help with puzzling staining problem...

Is there a diagnostic test that would easily confirm this? Sounds like the gist of this thread is to drive the pH down to 5-6 for a few days, but I'd need to bypass the heater to do this safely, and throw in a lot of brushing during the process. Because of the way the heater is plumbed, it...

I need help diagnosing a staining problem in a plaster pool. First, more information about the pool. I hope this isn't too long winded, but I'd rather not have a long series of follow up questions because I left something out. Bear with me... It is an approximately 10 year old 20' x 40'...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

_DSC1530.JPG[/attachment:3ilarx3e]_DSC1531.JPG[/attachment:3ilarx3e] Ask the real electrician to inspect everything this guy did. He should open each of the receptacles and anything else he accessed for a quick inspection for safety and code...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

Ok, I reread your original post. For some reason, I thought you said the electrician changed the main house breaker, in which case, it made no sense that he would touch this area. It the breakers above and below are new, it is more obvious what happened; he removed what was there in order to...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

A "proper" 240V breaker has a mechanical connection between the two poles, so that if one of them trips from an overload, it pulls the other half off at the same time. This is usually a pin that connects the two adjacent switches. Looking at that picture some more, it almost looks like there is...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

Ok. Take a look at the backbone "bus bars" of the pool breaker box. If you look carefully, you'll see that there are protruding blades that the breakers connect to. Notice how the lowest blade is from the left bus bar and if you were to put a breaker into either the vacant lower left or vacant...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

Your profile doesn't indicate whether you're in North America or not, but I'm going to assume that your power is delivered North American style (240V center-tap, two legs which are each 120V to neutral, but 240V leg-to-leg). Is your pump wired for 230V or 115? When you say you have "two...

    Pool Heating in Winter

Sorry to open an old thread, but... Once you initially heat the pool to 80F, the heater needs to run only to replace the heat energy which is lost, through the air, through the soil, radiated, or through evaporation. Specifically, the energy the heater needs to produce is equal to the energy...
