Thoughts on sand filter plus cartidge

Agreed. Dump the Cartridge filter (or manual backwash filter) and go with the sand. Cartridge will filter finer but you cant backwash. Pools need fresh water in them to get rid of UTDS and backwashing and getting new water into the pool is a great way to do this. Keep it simple.

After 12 days my water is still cloudy

Look in the sand filter and check the sand quality. You better wear a body condom when you do this (or wear gloves). Replace the sand and then floc or just replace the water. Any other suggestions?

Thinking about giving up and filling it in... suggestions?

Re: Thinking about giving up and filling it in... suggestion Old story goes. there once was an old woman that swallowed a fly...well you know the rest. Depends weather you want a pool or not as to how much you want to re invest. I would consider building a new pool from scratch and turning the...

Can a pump return water up hill?

Depends on many things. Best to understand fully what is involved here. Short answer to you question is yes. However, it really isn't a matter of a bigger pump or one simple answer. I would be looking at particular issues such as what the pressure of the filter is running at as well as the pump...

    Pool Heater size

If your just maintaining heat you will only need a small to mediums sized heater. Get a cover on the pool to to reduce cost and evaporation.

Pump near the house or further away

Just a thought - you would also find it hard to get the desired flow into a gas heater with bad plumbing and a variable speed pump working at low velocity.

Pump near the house or further away

Better to get the system right from the start. I still think that you should be looking at the efficiency of your plumbing as a variable speed pump will still struggle with poorly designed hydraulic system especially if there is no flooded suction and/or a high head. So I think introducing a...

    Pool Ozonator

In my opinion. Very little benefit given the parameters you have described.

Pump near the house or further away

The biggest thing to consider is good hydraulic design. A variable speed pump is of little or no advantage if you have not adequately sized the pipes of the distance that needs to be covered in a lengthy pipe run. Variable speed pumps will by nature run quieter as they run at lower head...

    Plaster suggestion

Sorry for that late suggestion. Any plaster or quartz finish is is, by nature, highly reactive and therefore it is important that the water balance is kept in check - especially on start up. Darker colors will by nature show up calcium staining more than lighter colors so I would consider that...

    Pool Ozonator

Ozone is great in a pool- provided you have lots of money to spend. There is a lot of great commercial ozone units but with the cost of air dryers refrigeration, gas injection lines and destruction chambers, it would be clear to suggest that anything marketed toward retail is just theoretical...
