    Add Borax or wait?

I just opened up the pool a few days ago but didn’t get my new Taylor 2006 test kit until yesterday. Normally I follow TFP’s closing methods for chemicals, but had the pool closed last year by a new company and I didn’t realize until I got the invoice they had added chemicals (no clue what they...

    Draining Fiberglass pool below returns

My pool company has me drain my fiberglass pool to just below the return jets last year (late October). When I took the mesh cover off in mid April, water was to the top of the coping. I’m in Michigan and we tend to have a lot of rain/snow. I’m trying to find that sweet spot where it’s safe to...

Do I need to change anything with TA?

I battle high TA every year. When we first got pool (water filled from well) 3 years ago TA was nearly 300! This year upon opening it was at 90, but has since crept up to 170. We have a SWG but have just turned it on after a successful week long SLAM (had ammonia and then algae). Current pH...

    Autofill- no water coming in?

Our pool has a Pouralid Autofill system (3 years old). It has never seemed to work properly. Unfortunately, our PB passed away last summer so I am unable to get any information. The supply line is tapped into our sprinkler system right by the backflow preventer. We just had the sprinkler...

    Help! CYA 70 to 10, CC 2!

So I had everything perfect a couple weeks ago with my pool. CYA was 70, FC was 7, CC 0, pH 7.6, total alkalinity 90 (mine always runs a little high). Due to crappy weather and being out of town, I haven’t tested again until today. I run a SWG so chlorine usually maintains just fine. Today I...

Help! Backwashed you drop water level below skimmer but it dropped another inch?

So we have a pool company coming today to close our pool. They wanted the pool drained to just below the skimmer. I backwashed this morning and lowered it to the bottom of the skimmer plate, then turned the pump off. I just went out there an hour later and the water level now looks to be an...

    High water temp

My daughter had a sleepover last night and cranked our pool heater up to 101 degrees. 😡 I caught it before it got that high, but temp is now 96. It’s only in the low 70’s in Michigan right now so I know it will naturally drop over the next day or two, but do I need to worry about any equipment...

Fire and no electricity- how to keep pool from becoming a swamp!

Unfortunately we had a house fire with significant damage last night. My family is safe, but it will most likely be several months before we’ll be able to get back in our house. The gas/electric meters were pulled as a precaution. They’re hoping to get some electricity back early next week...

Help me pick a pool robot for pool with “ledge”

Looking to get a pool vac robot and have been going crazy with all the choices! I’ve left a message with Marina Pools to get some additional info but I’m sure they are very busy. A little back got s with our pool: it’s fiberglass with large tanning ledge that is about 14” deep. There are 2...

    Should I increase pH?

I attached my most recent test results. Pool has a SWG but I just turned it on today- had just been adding bleach as needed since we haven’t been swimming due to cooler temps. Water is clear. If I do raise pH, is it better to add soda ash or borax to do so? Thanks!

    Thank you TFP!

Our pool was opened for the first time 3 days ago (new build last August) and thanks to your awesome advice, this is what it looks like! (See reply below with pics.). My PB did the opening and closing, but I took care of the chemical balancing with the TFP method. Now if it wasn’t 55 with 30...

Is it only pH that is inaccurate during SLAM?

My PB opened our pool yesterday. Water is dirty but fairly clear. Yay! I wasn’t sure how much bleach he put in, but I tested it tonight and FC is at 24, CC is <0.5. I know pH test won’t be accurate, but what about rest of tests? TA? CH? CYA? Thanks!

    Air leak? Losing suction...

My pool builder just came out today and opened our pool (just installed last August). I was vacuuming this evening and noticed I keep losing suction. There are no leaves in the pool FYI, just dirt, and I cleaned out skimmer and pump baskets multiple times. I have suction for about 60 seconds...

Wait for PB or open ourselves?

Hello! We had our fiberglass pool installed last August. As part of the package, our PB closed the pool last fall and said he would open again this year at no cost. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get ahold of him over the last few days to get something scheduled. We’re in Michigan and...

    Is this cover tight enough?

PB closed our new pool a couple weeks ago and I noticed today after some rain that the cover has a little sag to it. Does it need to be tightened a bit more? This is a brand new “micro mesh” cover and we are in southwest lower MI so we do get quite a bit of snow. Thanks!!

pH: How low can I go??

I’m trying to balance my TA in my new fiberglass pool. With my well fill water having a TA if 350, it has been a slow process over the past month. I’ve added MA in multiple doses to get to 190, but still have far to go! I’ve been taking pH down to 7.0 then aerating/waiting for it to rise to...

Extremely high TA but can’t get pH up?

Hello! Our pool was just completed in mid- August. Fill well water has CH of 350, TA of 350, and pH of 7.8. See details of our system in my signature. We’ve only just taken over pool care from the PB about 2 weeks ago, so I’m not sure what chemicals were added up to that point. Initially, TA...

    PAL light cover question

I have a new pool with a PAL LED light system installed. They are smaller lights, maybe 3” in diameter? There are clear covers on the lights that I’d like to clean underneath. Can I remove this cover underwater or will I be letting water into the electrical? Thanks!

    SLAM question

Hello! This is my first post! My family just had a new pool installed last month and we’re finally on the home stretch! I’m enjoying learning about all the ins and out of pool chemistry as I have a background in biology/chemistry. I included the description of the pool in my signature (18k...
