Hubby got in the pool this afternoon and discovered a lovely layer of "jelly-like" stuff on the bottom of the deep end in the corners where the sides meet the bottom... he scrubbed/stirred it up really well... I was wondering if it's algae or decomposing leaf particles... it was white, but so...

There were a TON of leaves in the pool when we opened... we scooped and scooped and scooped and scooped... they were nasty and rotten and mushy to say the least. Most of them were actually whitish when we pulled them out, with just a little brown here and there... I just put two and two...

Is that FUNK in the skimmer sock dead algae? If I couldn't see the bottom of the deep, I'd be worried it was decomposing body matter from a victim of the swamp we had this winter... :oops:

Does the teal color mean the algae still isn't all DEAD? :shock: :shock: :shock: Could the orange/brown color on the skimmer sock have anything to do with the fact that our soil here in this part of South Carolina is red clay?

The shallow end is clear, the deep is a cloudy teal-ish color... I don't see any dark spotches on the bottom and when I vac, I am not getting any leaves at all. As far as finding the DE, I looked at Walmart and Lowes, but didn't go to the pool store because they are SO high pressure and...

Kimkats... thanks for your post. After your reminder that I needed clear water to truly be finished with the shocking process, I decided against the OCLT because the water is far from clear. I do see some serious improvement today... the rain that was supposed to be here all day turned out...

I like the idea of the OCLT... I could do that tonight. Does the fact that we have gotten consistent rainfall since Friday evening and that it isn't expected to stop until Tuesday morning going to affect the results? Should I do it now or wait until Wednesday when the rain clears for a few...

I did the OCLT again last night I think I passed! :) :party: Last night, the FC was 10.5, this morning it was 10! The CC last night didn't turn completely colorless with 1 drop, so it took 2, which using a 10ml sample gives me a 1.0 CC, even though if I could've used 1/2 a drop, it would've...

That's what I thought... Since I did the test twice this morning with the same results, I am going to use that as my number for today... I'll test again tonight and see what it says and run the OCLT again. Can my kids swim at this FC level?

It took me a little while, but I figured out how to do the tests using the kit :P I totally see how useless the strips were and am so glad you guys helped me see the light!! When the UPS guy pulled into the neighborhood, it was all I could do not to hug him -- :-D

Okay, here are my test results from tonight: FC 10.5 CC 0.5 pH 7.5 ALK 130 Calcium 140 CYA 35 I'm thinking my FC is high, but that's because of the shocking I've been doing to rid the pool of algae. I think my CYA is a little low. I'm off to look at the pool calculator ... Any advice...
