Frequency of preventive lamp rubber seal replacement

I've installed a $150 LED light bulb along with a new lamp gasket/seal two years ago and assume that if the rubber gasket leaks and wets the electronics in the bulb, the bulb is lost. I've only had a pool 3 years so don't know what life expectancy to expect from the seal. How often would you...

Teledyne Laars Mark V 400'000 BTU heater overhaul

The parts I ordered at poolpartsonline were a perfect fit. re-plumbed with a valve allowing to by-pass the heater (to reduce head loss). Took burner tray out, brushed quite a bit of rust off. re-sealed and tightened gas pipes pressure valve switch was defective, swapped with unit from an old...

Teledyne Laars Mark V 400'000 BTU heater overhaul

Took the header apart over the week end. Hammered a lot of rust out of the in/out header and the return header. The inside of the heat exchanger tubes is perfectly clean and reaming is not needed. Brushed black soot off the exchanger fins to improve heat transfer. Ordered a by-pass valve...

Teledyne Laars series II heater value

If you want to know how much it is worth, list it on craigslist. Giving it a second life is much more ecological than scrapping it. But of course it does not help the USA's job problem.

Teledyne Laars Mark V 400'000 BTU heater overhaul

Re: My Teledyne Laars Mark V 400'000 BTU It seems the flow control is shot and let most of the water always bypass the header. That explains the big bangs: water slacks in the header, boils and and pressure bursts. The by-pass valve disc looks like it lost its outer part. In addition i saw...

Teledyne Laars Mark V 400'000 BTU heater overhaul

This post is not really to ask a question. It is rather to share the experience of attempting to overhaul my mammoth. The heater came with the house and its gas supply was off. When the gas technician was here to turn the water heater and whole house air heater on, he also had a look at the...

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

Time to report on pump efficiency. Input is 1h total power consumption, provided by the smart meter, at night while pump runs. The rest of the house also runs, so actual pump power drain of the pool motor is lesser, but the difference is a good approximation of the gain between motors. The wet...

Need Help for Motor or Pump Replacement

Are you sure about this measurement? It would be disappointing that wet-end and all being equal, a new high efficiency motor needs 8% more electricity to do the same job as the old motor.

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

I have a smart meter which let me confirm the above : With the broken diffuser, the average house consumption while pump runs at night is 1.93kWh. With the repaired diffuser, it fell by 65.9W. I also noticed that while the air vents in the fridge were iced, my fridge was using an extra 127W...

    2 speed pump wiring help?

Hello Bamba Rambler, I am curious to know how your double throw switch holds up. I picked up the same yesterday and it seems small to carry 1/2 HP. (My motor is 1HP). thanks

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

Planning to pick up this used 2-speed motor. Came off a no-name SPA pump. Shaft is threaded. Seller says 4 hp. Any reason why it would not attach to a starite wetend? I had no idea GE makes pool motors. But after all what do they not make? thanks

    not pulling water

I assume there is water under the lid. Else the below is a waste of time. I'm not familiar with Hayward, but some classical ideas that come to mind: file or angle grind the bolt's head to a square, then get it with an adjustable wrench, hack saw or angle grind the bolt in the middle or at the...

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

Pump is back online with new diffuser. 22psi at filter (seems high). Now shopping for a motor.

    not pulling water

Is there water or air under the lid? (did it lose prime). Is the water level above all skimmers. If there is water under the lid when the motor spins then it sounds like a problem in the wet-end. Could be the impeller, diffuser, or a blockage.

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

I took the pump apart and discovered 1) a broken diffuser around 2/3 of the perimeter. part#C1-200PA 2) impeller is C105-137P EB I am a bit confused because the dura-glas manual (http://www.staritepool.com/pdfs/DuraGlasOM.pdf) says this impeller/diffuser are found on 1HP as well as 1.5HP pumps...

Reducing electricity use with pump mods

Hello, I have a sta rite wet end (from the 70s?). I believe 1hp impleller (not sure. i have not removed the impeller, I attached a picture and serial # on the shrout is C103-137P1)). The wet end was formerly (before i got the house) attached to a 1hp sf 1.65 a.o.smith (8A@230V). now attached to...

Opening Pool...Day 25, Work Your Magic ProTeam's MM

Re: Opening Pool...Day 20, How long is it safe to shock? Keep shocking, pump on 24/7 and daily brushing. No surrender ! I would not hose the cartridge before the pressure increases. Cartridges filter better when dirty. Pumps are meant to pump and I would not worry either about the liner at FC...

Comparison of three methods to half the CYA

    1) drain 1/2 the water (in one shot) and refill. Cost: 50% of the pool water capacity 2) drain 1/4, refill (now CYA is 3/4), drain (1/4) refill (now CYA is 0.56), drain (12%) and refill. Cost: 62% of pool water capacity 3) drain 5% refill (now CYA is 95%), drain 5% refill (now CYA is 90%), etc...

I'm On Week 6 and I just cant quite get it! Help!

Why rush to start shocking without having the most essential tool: test kit to measure accurately FC and CC? Pool school does not teach the virtues of patience, but maybe the cost of chemicals will, eventually.
