patch of yellow algae but pool was balanced???

Oh I scrubbed it and dumped in a full jug of bleach......this morning no algae. Like I said, it was just starting. I rechecked my cya level, and it was around 50 not 40 so I think that my fc was too low for the level of cya. I have to relearn every year that as the weather warms I have to...

patch of yellow algae but pool was balanced???

This morning I got up and noticed a patch of yellow algae on the base of one wall. I tested the water and pool chemistry while not ideal seemed ok enough not to start algae growth. specifically the readings were; Chlorine - 2.0 PH - 7.5 Total Alkalinity - 60 hardness = 350 stabilizer - 40 water...

    Clumps of little brown bugs

Yep. They gather after the rains. I use my skimmer to gather them up and then rinse them off the skimmer with the hose. Is there some automatice skimming that would eliminate this? No, I do not leave the pump on over night. My pool temp is currently 83 degrees and I am running the pump 7...

pool store chlorine vs. common laundry bleach

Thanks, my pool is fairly small so the savings would be neglible. I didn't know that Chlorine lost potency so quickly. Being from Florida where year round use of pools is common, I doubt that the pool store stocks are very old. I side with the convenience of using the "jug" from the pool...

pool store chlorine vs. common laundry bleach

Regular 'not fancy' laundry bleach has about 5% chlorine, the pool store guy says the chlorine level of the bleach he sells is around 13%. I have no way of knowing if this is true, but it does seem stronger. Is there a standard strength for pool store bleach? Is it worth the extra money over...

    Clumps of little brown bugs

It's pretty hot in Florida these days, and the summer thunderstorms are here as well. I notice that at this time of year I sometimes get up in the morning to find clumps of little brown bugs on the surface of my pool. They are definetly alive and appear to be similar to an ant. I'm wondering...

taylor R0008 was green, now blue?

I have a taylor test kit for about two years. the instructions for testing total alkalinity say that after putting in 2 drops of r0007 to then add add 5 drops of r0008. The sample should turn green, and it always has, then add R0009 untill sample turns to red.... But I needed a new bottle of...

Small white 'pimples" on resurfaced pool wall

Yes, that's it exactly...thanks.... The first nodules were scrapped off bt mne over a week ago and are still gone. I did notice a couple more this morning and scrapped them off as well. Is there a chemical ratio that is best for this condition?

Small white 'pimples" on resurfaced pool wall

About two years ago, I had my pool compeltely resurfaced. Recently I have noticed several small white 'pimples' forming on the pool wall. When I scratched a few of them it appears something is seeping through the pool wall and hardening into a white crystaline substance.....Any idea what this...

Thanks, will switch back to the muriatic.

    Red acid bottle or blue?

Ok, I checked the 'blue' bottle it is sulphuric acid 38% and markedted as "fume free" . I know the 'red' bottle is muriatic acid but I don't know the concentration. Other than that they are both acids and so will lower ph, is one acid inherently better than another?

    Red acid bottle or blue?

My apologies. I thought that the color coding was generic throughout the industry. I don't know much more about them except that the blue bottle doesn't has the harsh odor. I will research this soon and be more accurate in any future posts.

    Red acid bottle or blue?

At the pool store, they sell two types of acid. The red bottle has a strong, harsh odor whereas the blue does not. Both seem to lower my ph equally well. I wonder is one type better than the other? A neighbor (not a pool pro) told me that the blue won't change TA but the red will. thanks.

    Phosphate levels?

Thanks....TFP is the best pool resource on the web.

    Phosphate levels?

OK, so if I understand correctly. Phosphates feed algae. By preventing algae with proper cholirination it doesn't matter what the phosphate level is. Reducing the phosphate level is therefore unnecessary. Maintaining proper chlorination to prevent algae blooms is all that is required.

    Phosphate levels?

I have never heard of this before. My son in law was having a persistant problem that was solved when the pool store diagnosed his problem as something with phosphates. They sold him a product that solved his problem. Sorry he was very sketchy on the details. all he knows is that "phosphate...

    Some rookie questions

First I just want to say that by following the BBB recommendations here for the past year or so, I have had zero problems with my pool water. Great reason to trust the recommendations I get here at TFP. That being said, I need to change the O ring on my filter. I'm wondering if there is a...

    leaking sta-rite plm 100

Funny thing...I took the suggestion and entered my model # as it appears on the shell. "Sta-rite system 3 modular filtration PLM100" yet when the results came up the filter that was pictured was absolutely NOT my filter. I scanned around the sites and it was clear to me that the filter I have...

    leaking sta-rite plm 100

I noticed that there are a few trickles of water from my filter. Everything fits snugly, but the o ring is shot. I hesitate to go to my local pool store. Two years ago, I bought an o ring for my stabilizer tab feeder and even though I gave them the exact specs they still sold me the wrong one...

    new style vacuum heads

Thank you! I have a concrete pool. If any one of the 3 pool "professionals" I spoke with had mentioned that they would have sold me.

    new style vacuum heads

My old vacuum head had brushes and has served me well for the past 7 years. It's looking pretty shabby so I decided to get a new one. Went to 3 pool stores and none of them have vacuum heads with brushes. I explained to them that I liked this type of head and none of them tried to point out...

    brush problem

A few months ago I noticed the clear bristles of my wide brush were floating in the pool and in the filter. I replaced it, but within weeks noticed more bristles. Figuring that the new brush may have had some loose bristles I decided to monitor the situation. It is now nearly two months into...

    Yellow pollen

This is a problem most of you won't have to face for several months, but down here in Florida it's occurring right now. Every morning there is a ring of yellow pollen around the edge of my pool. Just like a bathtub ring. I brush it daily and check the chemicals. The pollen is ugly but doesn't...

    Cyanuric Acid question

thanks for the replies. I tried using a thinner sock and this morning it was practically empty, so I'm now confident that there is cya in the pool. Funny but it is barely registering. I used about a pound and a half for a 6600 gal pool...My rough estimates tell me that should be a level of...

    Cyanuric Acid question

I have zero CYA in my pool. I bought granulated CYA and put it in a sock in the skimmer and left the pool pump running as recommended in the TFP pool school. I noticed that the granules seemed to have hardly dissolved at all. They are completely submerged and the pump is running. Is this...

    Shocking a newly re-plastered pool

I added chemicals to my newly re-plastered and freshly filled pool. Water is sparkly blue. all numbers are good, TA - 80 CH - 400 Ph - 7.2 except the FC went from 0 to 12 with one application of chlorine. I have a 6600 gallon pool and added 2 gals of chlorine. This seemed like a reasonable...

    what is clarifier?

My pool was recently re-plastered and it was suggested I add clarifier. Don't see it recommended here so I figuered I would ask.

    Pool completely resurfaced

Fresh plaster can raise the PH very very quickly for the first little while. good to know...Really I was shocked to see how it jumped from 7.2 to over 8 in just one day. Yes, I will test daily and add acid as needed. thanks
