Another question about water level when pool is closed.

I have vinyl so it’s not a concern for me with freezing. If I had tile , I would be sure and keep it below the tile at least 3 or 4 inches. I would be concerned about moisture behind and around the tile when it freezes and expands . Look at it this way, it can’t hurt to keep it below and be...

used my skimmer with vacuum hose to empty pool this year

This yr. I just used the garden hose siphon trick and set the elevation of the hose in the pool where I wanted it to stop. Of course it takes 3 or 4 days, but that was all part of the plan.

    Mesh cover choices.

I close my pool when the leaves start dropping, I just put the cover on and run the pump about 1 hr a day until the water temp is in the 50’s. At that time I bring The pool up to shock level, blow the lines and put the pump in the basement. When I open in the spring, I first leave the cover on ...

Question about blowing out the lines for winter

I use a small pancake compressor and blow through the drain screw at the pump basket. I don’t build up pressure in the tank, I just hook up the compressor and turn it on. The compressor will gradually push air through the lines and push out the water. It won’t clear like a pool blower will , but...

    #lifehack for adding Liquid Chlorine

I pour it in a small Bucket and throw it right in the middle of the pool all in one motion. Like I was throwing a bucket of water on a fire. 😂 Then rinse the bucket.

You guys are killing me with these opening threads!

I just hooked up the pump today. Cover is still on, I will leave it on until the oak trees quit blossoming. Water temp was 59.5. I added a little chlorine and ran the pump for a couple of hrs. It was clear with a few leaves on the bottom and the pump worked good. Put a new gaskets and seal on...

Closing main drain / plumbing design

If you hook up the compressor hose like I stated above, your compressor will not build pressure Into the storage tank because the air is constantly being pumped into your pool lines. Thus no setting pressure manually. Now if you removEd the hose from the nipple at the pump basket, then yes your...

Closing main drain / plumbing design

I have 2 skimmers and they both have 1 permanently closed hole, the other hole in each skimmer is able to be plugged. When I blow my lines, I hook up my compressor to the pump through the drain screw at the basket area, turn on the compressor and air start to enter the pump and lines, as it...

    Polyquat 60 At Closing?

I always hook up the pump in early spring and circulate some chlorine in the water with the cover still on. With the cover still on the chlorine last a long time as long as there is not a lot of organic junk in there.

    Couple closing questions.

The sand filter should have a screw cap at the back bottom of the filter, after you blow the lines, remove that plug for the winter and loosen the top plug so air will get into the filter and help it drain more. Leave off the bottom plug and water will drain by gravity as needed. Don’t forget...

    mesh winter covers

No, I drain my pool below the deck about 16 to 18”. I put the cover on and that’s it. I keep leaves off the cover durning the winter. I keep water below the bottom lip of the skimmers when it fills up with a small pump. That’s it. I hook up the pump in the spring when the water is below 60...

    mesh winter covers

I have one ( loop loc). I like it and when it wears out I will buy another. I monitor the water level when it gets to high and simply pop a corner in the shallow end and put in a small pump and lower it as needed. I use to use the siphon method, but now the little electric pump is much easier...

Did I break my pump? Ran pump with water too low.

The pump may need to be primed. Stick the garden hose in where the pump basket is, fill it up with water, close lid and turn pump on. I do this every year after winter once I reinstall my pump. Your pump just lost its prime because the water was to low and you got air in the lines.

    First opening…clean pool!

I haven’t removed the loop lock cover yet, but I brought up the pump out of the basement, hooked it up, and started adding the appropriate cya, baking soda, and chlorine. All my cya disappeared this winter , which in not uncommon.

    Liquid Chlorine Usage Rate

What else works good for filtering out organic stuff like pollen is use some some poly filling from a pillow. I use this in both skimmers during the spring and it really traps a lot of pollen. Just buy a cheap pillow at Walmar.

    Liquid Chlorine Usage Rate

    Patching a tarp, any suggestions?

I would try some of that vinyl cement used for patching vinyl pools. You know it’s good even if is wet. You could even use some pool liner vinyl if you had some laying around as a patch.

    First time closing pool myself

A shop vac will most likely not have enough pressure to blow a main drain. Other people have posted about this many times.

    Problems blowing out lines

I always remove my pump and put it in the basement. It has these PVC unions on the pipes that make it easy. It looks like yours does also.

    Problems blowing out lines

I fold my cover accordion style so it deploys fast. I mark the end of a strap with a red piece of tape so I know how to lay it on the deck before I roll it out. Glad you got it figured out. Next time you will be twice as fast.

    Problems blowing out lines

No, I backwash before I blow the lines and the low pressure pushes the water out of the filter but no sand. then I remove the drain cap from the filter and losen the top screw so any left over water in filter can drain.

    Pool is full

Yep, here it the NE we get a lot of rain. I drain mine below the returns, about 14” from normal level. I just blew the lines last week and pulled the pump. I don’t like water getting in my skimmer boxes at all, there old and I’m scared they may crack with a hard freeze. And I do add a little...

    Problems blowing out lines

I pretty much do the same thing with a 6 gal compressor except, I leave it on filter, I leave the valve open for both the main drain and skimmers, I hook my compressor up to pump drain like you and just turn on compressor. As the compressor runs and air is pumped into lines, when the first...

Can I close pool for winter with no CYA ?

Mine is like yours, CYA around 10, I just added some polyquat 60 and let it mix for a day before closing. It’s done this in the past with low cya and my above routine works good. I also open early in the spring with no alga, the polyquat does it’s job.
