Confirm my idiocy... sand out of return

Hey gang, I'm a "little" behind the 8-ball on closing my pool this season here in MN and I was busting my rear end today trying to get it done. Unfortunately the pool got moderately neglected this fall so there was a fair amount of vacuuming that needed to be done before shutting it down...

    Air Bubbles in Return Jets

I'm finally just getting my pool up and running for the year. I decided to replace my pump as it was 10 years old and was getting pretty loud at the end of last year. When I installed the new pump today, I too have bubbles coming out the return. I realize this is after the pump and...

    Struggling to lower TA

Do CYA levels have any effect TA levels? Thanks!

    Struggling to lower TA

I don't have any other methods of aerating, just my one return jet. Fill water TA = 300 I just tested my pool TA and it was 175 and my pH was 8, so hopefully when I add the appropriate amount of MA, I will be under the 150 mark for my TA. What should I shoot for?

    Struggling to lower TA

So I had the best of intentions to add borates this summer (7 boxes of 20 mule team in my garage), but I am struggling to decrease my TA to reasonable levels. My TA has consistently been hanging around the 200ppm range. I have been constantly aerating with my return jet, letting my pH climb to...

    Taking the plunge... Part 2

I have ordered a rule cover pump, gorilla pad, new beaded liner, and a new skimmer. Saturday is supposed to be partly cloudy with temps in the high 80's. I have 3 buddies coming over to help, one of which worked for a pool store for a couple years putting up AG pools and replacing liners...

So since I have an AG, Gorilla pad would be a good idea? Thanks!

    Taking the plunge... Part 2

I may have been a bit too vague in my previous post. Here are a couple questions that I have... 1) Is one place better than another to buy a liner? Anywhere to avoid? 2) Differences and suggestions for gauge of liner? 3) Once I drain the water in my pool to see what is all underneath, will I...

    Taking the plunge... Part 2

So, here I am again... middle of May in MN, gazing out at my 1/2 filled pool debating whether or not to take on the daunting task of getting it up and running. Thankfully, after seeing the transformation from last year, I am eager to take on the challenge. As a very brief refresher (see link...

Evaporation vs. hole in my liner

Hey guys, Just wondering how fast water should be evaporating out of my pool. I may be a bit on the paranoid side because I have had a couple of holes in my liner this year, but I seem to be loosing an inch or so of water per day. It's been around 80* the last few days and I am thinking I...

Please "school" me in solar covers...

What is the difference in mills? I live in MN where there tends to be a cold spring. Right now, my pool is hovering right around 70*, which is a bit on the cool side in my opinion. What do people typically leave there temps at?

Please "school" me in solar covers...

Would you replace it because it is most likely not doing a good job retaining and/or generating heat???

Please "school" me in solar covers...

So I have just completed the baqua conversion and my pool life is beginning to look up! I do have a few questions about my solar cover though and I am hoping someone will be able to give some clarification... 1) Bubbles down, correct? 2) Due to neglect, frusteration, never ending algae with...

    Taking the plunge...

Jason, what are your thoughts on throwing a bag of salt in for softer feeling water? Yay or nay? Also, what is an acceptable TA level before adding borates with my setup? Would you say the best way for me to decrease my TA is to point my jet up so it breaks the surface of the water and add...

I can officially see the bottom! :whoot: Although the water still is a bit hazy, the clarity has definitely improved. I guess the new sand must have done the trick. Unfortunately, last winter I apparently thought it was a good idea to use a 45lb weight to keep my winter cover from being...

OCLT = .5ppm with CC of 0. Changed the sand yesterday evening and added 64 ounces (by weight) of CYA this morning (socks in front of return jet is OK, correct?). I will be gone for the weekend again, but my roommate will add chlorine each night as needed. Should I continue to hold the pool...

    Taking the plunge...

That is correct. Should I go ahead and proceed with the conversion or wait for clarity to improve? If the clarity does not improve when my pH down to 7.2, does that rule out calcium clouding? Any idea what else may be causing this or what I can try to clear things up? Thanks again, Matt

Well, since I had already brought my FC up to 15 I used the poolcalculators recommendation of 20oz of MA to bring my pH from 7.5 to 7.2. I didn't bother rechecking as I knew it would be inaccurate. Here numbers for last night and this morning... 6/22 @ 2130: FC - 14 CC - 1 6/23 @ 0600: FC -...

Hey Jason, I'm not sure I follow the part of your post that says "lower the PH to 7.2 (which FC is low) should clear things up". What does (which FC is low) mean? Do you mean while FC is low? After I posted last, I decided to add bleach as I figured I would only make progress over the next...

Before I left for the weekend on Friday, I noticed the pool was loosing water again so in my frusteration I decided to shut the pump down and deal with it when I got home. :grrrr: Yesterday, I found another leak (makes me question the strength of my liner after being exposed to the sun all...

Sounds good Jason. I only lost 2ppm of FC last night and my CC was .5 so I think I am still making progress. Little to no change in the clarity though. Unfortunately I am leaving for the weekend so I will not be able to run a PH, TA, and CH test until Sunday. I gave my roommates the low down...

I realize I need to have some POP, but I am getting discouraged. I have been at it for over a week holding my FC around 15 and still have cloudy water. Hopefully you are right, Jason! What do you think about the forum switch? Should we leave this topic here or would it be appropriate to...

The pool still looks cloudy this morning. Here are my numbers Last night @ 2230 - FC: 17, CC: .5 Today @ 0600 - FC: 13.5, CC: 1 One concern I have regarding the FAS-DPD test, is that since I have started using 1 heaping scoop of r-0870 rather than 2 level scoops the water initially is a...

I have had the last couple days off so I have been vigilantly holding the FC level right around 15 for the last couple days, as well as regularly brushing and vacuuming. Jason, I found a place here in Rochester that sells R-0871. The bigger issue at hand is that I looked more closely around the edges of the pool to see if I could identify any source for a leak and realized my lawn is saturated on the side opposite of the plumbing, so the only thing I can think...
