    Algae, Dust or Pollen?

Don't think maintaining shock is going to be a problem. Earlier I had turned it up to 50% and when I just tested FC was about 35, so I turned the SWG back down to 10%. Will check again tomorrow. Thanks. Howard

    Algae, Dust or Pollen?

I just added what I calculated should be enough 8.25% bleach to take me to 28 for the shock. Now my question is... What do I do with my SWG? I'm running at 30% now. Do I turn it up? To what level? Superchlorinate? Do I turn it down or off? Appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks. Howard

    Algae, Dust or Pollen?

OK, so I better get some bleach on it. My shock level looks like 28. Thanks for straightening me out. Howard

    Algae, Dust or Pollen?

Not sure what I have in my pool. Started opening things up 2 weeks ago and have sequentially run through a series of repair and replacement issues after a winter of neglect. Here's last week's water settings: Salt = 3640ppm FC = 0 pH = 7.2 CYA = 0 TA = 60 CH = 200 I replaced my salt cell...

Help for New Pool Filter That I Don't Understand

So, another 18 months have come and gone, and I've cleaned these cartidges a few times ( about 4 or 5) since I originally posted this topic. But I'm now suspicious that it might be time to replace the cartidges. While I didn't install it, I believe the cartidges are at least 5+ years old right...

Trying to Get Water in Balance

OK, I added the suggested bleach/CYA and waited a week for the water to fully reflect the changes. Filter is running 24/7 and pool water looks good. Here's the current data as of this morning: Water temp: 67 degrees Salt = 3640ppm per strip FC = 7 CC = 0 pH = 7.7 CYA = 70 TA = 70 CH = 200...

Great advice. I'll get the testing vials out again later. Thanks. Howard

Trying to Get Water in Balance

Actually the water looks pretty good. We've had a very cool Spring until last week so I might have dodged a bullet there. Biggest current water issue is all the pollen on top. Howard

Trying to Get Water in Balance

One last question: Do I have to wait a week for the CYA stabilizer to dissolve before I put the new salt cell in, or can I safely start it up now? I'll get FC to 10 via bleach, but looking forguidance if I need to keep the bleach going for a week.. Thanks. You guys are the best. Thanks for...

Trying to Get Water in Balance

Last year was my first summer living in a home with a SWG pool. After applying BBB the prior year in a more traditional pool I just loved the lower workload, and I must admit after the first few tests all kept coming back solid, I pretty much adopted a "set it and forget it" management plan...

How SWG Works With Pump Timer

That's exactly what I need to know. Make sure the electrician wires the timer so that it controls both the pump and the AquaRite. Thanks. Howard

How SWG Works With Pump Timer

In process of adding a pump timer and thinking through how this will impact my SWG cell. If the Goldline AquaRite controller is set on "auto" but the pump gets turned off, what is the impact on the SWG? Does it stay energized without any flow? Do I have to turn it off also? Don't want to...

    Adding a Pump Timer?

No heater required. In Memphis the water gets to 90 degrees + all by itself. Howard

    Adding a Pump Timer?

Ask for the stars, maybe get the moon? If the Intermatic Mechanical timer is the best value maybe that's what I need. How do most people handle winter freezing conditions? Howard

    Adding a Pump Timer?

I've spent all week cleaning my filter, tracking down and fixing a pressure problem related to an impeller full of junk, and have just ordered a replacement salt cell. You'd think that would be enough for any one week. But you'd be wrong. One good benefit of spending so much time on the...

    Problems With My Salt Cell

Decided to bypass the pool store test and just ordered a replacement cell. Figured it was at the outer end of it's useful life. Howard

    Problems With My Salt Cell

Have spent past week slowly getting pool ready for the new season. Took cell out and cleaned with acid, then reinstalled. Had some very suspect readings on my AquaRite controller, using a Hayward T-15 cell. For instance, was getting "Hot" warning, also showing salt = 0. At the same time...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Yes, the lubricant was sticky and allowed the ring to stay in the channel while I put it together and tightened the bolts. But I think it was really the combo of that plus totally disconnecting the pump from the PVC and turning it up on end so that gravity wasn't working against me so much...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Update: Looks a Lot Like Success To Me! Just reconnected everything and turned on the power/water/pump. Blew a ton of air out of the pipes and also quickly collected a strainer trap full of leaves that the prior lower pressure just couldn't move along. Pressure gauge showing 12 psi, just...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

PJ, wish I had seen your post about an hour ago. I had a tough time getting the ring in the exact right spot, but think I actually managed to do so. Like you I relied upon a little helper. In my case it was the waterproof lubricant. It was sticky enough to hold it in place...at least I hope...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Yes, it's definitely high pressure. I will take apart, make sure surfaces are clean, and reseat the seal plate o ring. Do I only need to be concerned with the specific area where I see the leak or is that misleading? Are there any tricks to doing this? The hardest part for me is that the...

OK, here's a couple photos from this morning. I turned the pump on and the water started spewing on one side, and there is a small drip on the other side. Leak by hlothrop, on Flickr Drip by hlothrop, on Flickr

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

OK...good news/bad news. First, pool store had seal ring for the pump, o ring for the union, waterproof lubricant for the rings, and a new trap strainer (broken pieces from old one were found in impeller). Out the door for $31 including tax and was happy to pay it. Got home and got to work on...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Yes, both have "O" rings. Take the old one with me I guess to be sure I get the right thing? Is this a Pool Store item or Lowes/Home Depot or order online?

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

OK, I put it all together, turned on the power and let it run. Here's the dismal result of attempt #1. 1) Leak at top collar I guess if you have a leak anywhere, it's going to be on that pressurized line going out from the pump. Other than a new gasket, any suggestions? 2) Looks like a leak...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Well, I certainly appreciate the supportive advice, but I'm way too early into things to be claiming victory just yet. Give me an hour to put things (hopefully) back in their rightful places and then we'll see how it goes from there. Thanks again. Howard

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Richard...thanks for the good advice. I didn't really want to do it (afraid of my own mechanical limitations) but it was definitely the right thing to do. Impeller was indeed full of leaf debris, but probably worse it had some bits of wood and plastic that were really clogging things up. I...

    I Think I Have a Pump Problem...

Update: I slid the pump motor as far to the left as possible. Can't get motor completely out of way, but can start to see inside. Stuck my fingers through gap between motor and pump and manipulated the impeller. I can't see it clearly but when I put my fingers inside that big yellow beast...
