Filling Pool to Close it-Chemical Questions

Ok, thanks for that about the PolyQuat. I have no choice but to fill, chlorine, and close. The timing is terrible, and it's supposed to be raining tomorrow!

Filling Pool to Close it-Chemical Questions

Hey Everyone, Had severe pool issues all season-leaking-painted surface disintgrating-surface cracks. So after major repairs and a new hi-build epoxy painted surface (over concrete), we are having our pool filed tomorrow and then immediately closing it. Talk about a short swim season! Anyway...

Evaporation - How much is too much?

Wasn't sure where to put this post... Is there any method for determining how much evaporation in 1 day is due to the environment or a small leak? In other words, is there a threshold amount that would lean towards a leak? I have a painted concrete pool and I am putting top off water in almost...

    Question for the Chemistry Pros

Out of curiousity I read the manual for my Taylor test kit yesterday because I never quite understood the Water Sat Index (Watergram) and really wanted to understand how to use it (if at all). Here are a few questions: 1) Is anyone using the CYA correction to TA table, why or why not? 2) If...

    TFPC for Beginners old comments

Re: BBB for Beginners Ok...so, I should follow the guidelines for vinyl? Not sure I would agree with that especially in the area of CH. I have read in other threads the discussion about switching to the SWG chart when one goes with an LQ? Just curious. I guess it doesn't matter if you shoot for...

    TFPC for Beginners old comments

Re: BBB for Beginners One small question: Most of the recommendations for BBB state guidelines for plaster, vinyl, gunite, fiberglass, etc... However, I never see the recommendation for concrete pools. I can't be the only person in the entire Northern Hemisphere with one of these well-made, old...

    Choosing an Automatic Chlorinator

Haven't seen this question posted regarding the LQ: I have a concern about the bleach/chlorine outdoors. My pump is on a cement pad and primarily shaded by trees. Do I have any reason to be concerned about chlorine + heat in the LQ? I am really thinking of buying the product, but need expert...

Solar Blanket: Which one works best.

Thanks for that answer PaulR. I hadn't thought about buying a bit longer to do that. I do wonder, if any part of the water is left uncovered, does that radically make the solar balnket ineffective? In essence, IS a solar blanket supposed to cover all of the water? I had heard somewhere about...

Solar Blanket: Which one works best.

To extend the questions on solar blankets. I have an unsual shaped pool (see my avatar) and we are going to buy a new solar cover because ours is popping and getting filled with water. So, If I only buy a rectangular blanket for the narrowest part of the pool and leave the two areas that bulge...

Ascorbic Treatment to rid Pool of metal stains

Hi Mbar, Yeah, we talked extensively last year about this and I did use the PolyQuat 60 as directed. In hindsight, I think that I should have tripled the doses just to be safe. I have about a 30,000 gallon pool (+ or -), and I think it is better to be safe than sorry, as I most certainly was...

Ascorbic Treatment to rid Pool of metal stains

Hi Mbar, Do you have a preferred product that turns the metal into crystals that can be vac'ed out? I remember seeing it mentioned here before, but I want to be sure which one it was. I will say this, that the ascorbic acid treatment worked wonders on my old concrete pool. But I got a very nasty...

    Solar Pool Cover Question.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would ask here. We have a solar blanket that came with our pool when we bought the house. It is not blue but a greenish color. We would like to put it on a spool and reel thing at the shallow end, but here is the question. When the blanket is rolled...

    Stabilized chlorine tablets

JasonLion said: Ok, that makes sense. Although the water was a little milky before I added anything. Yeah, I was just spitballing on the testing and really curious if the CYA dropped, which it needed to. We had to put a new solid cover on because the other was leaking and they mixed the water...

    Stabilized chlorine tablets

JasonLion said: Ok, not to be too dense  , but I thought that the ONLY way to be rid of high CYA is to replace water. How can it "disappear" over the winter? I had a substantial CYA at the end of last year in the 100+ppm range and I had tons of problems after doing an ascorbic acid...

    Avatars

I cannot upload an avatar. I have resized the pic to 80x53, tried Photobucket and Tinypic. I will get errors that it is not a Jpeg, giff (& some other protocol, that I can't remember) or I will get an error that it exceeds the 5kb requirement. I am unsure how to resize to meet the 5 kb...

    Anyone using SOLAR SUN RINGS?

Solar Rings I bought about 12 of the Solar Rings last season and that didn't cover the entire pool but about 75%. I live in Central NJ, and while it does get hot here (my pic is the last recent entry on the submit your photo for the slide show thread), our pool location has a lot of very tall...

Any new pools for the slideshow?

Old Pool-still kicking it... Here is my pool. As far as we can tell original Sylvan pool @40 years old. While we really want to remodel it with all the bells and whistles, it still (to me) looks very nice and was a well-made and designed pool for the 1960s.

    Pool Paint Dilemma

Thanks Thanks for the reply JasonLion. Do you think that it is worth it if you only plan on the paint lasting for a few years? We really would love to do an entire restoration, however, the things we really want to do will cost @$25,000 or more, and it is just not feasible now. Our thought was...

    Pool Paint Dilemma

Replying to my own post Ok, no responses. Is no one painting their pools nowdays? Am I in the stone age? Will the Flinstones be coming over for a Bar-B-Q? My old pool is originally painted, and while I would love to do a complete upgrade with plaster, lights, slate, yada, yada, yada, the...

    Pool Paint Dilemma

My husband and I are going round and round over the choice of color for the resurface of our old concrete pool. I am really wanting Olympic brand's White, he thinks that it should be the Blue Mist. Since Olympic does not include any photos of their paints with water in the pools, has anyone...

    Should I add Calcium?

Hi mbar, I have read many of your posts regarding the stain treatment and have followed it with fantasic results. I swear that my pool never looked better than when I dumped the ascorbic acid it. It didn't really cloud up, but the water was so sparkly! Anyway...I trust your opinion because I...

    Should I add Calcium?

Thank you mbar & JasonLion. I had a feeling that this might be the case. The calcium did drop, although I am not sure how rapidly, as I did not actually test for it at that time. However, about 7 weeks ago I was at 320, and now it is 210-180. Sometimes I have difficulty with knowing exactly when...

    Should I add Calcium?

Any thoughts on why this might be happening? Always ran this pool in the 250 and slightly higher range for CH. I am wondering if this is too low for a concrete pool anyway. Had to add some fill water last week, which is high in Calcium and unfortunately, iron. You would think that this would...

    Should I add Calcium?

Numbers today: FC 10 TC 10 CC 0 CYA 80 PH 7.2 TA 90 CH 180 Temp for water @ 66-68 Pool looked very clear. Cleaned and vaccumed it. Used the brush to move acorns and noticed a white chalky substance lifting when I brushed, primarily in the deep end. Pool has not been green. Chlorine has been...

    I need help...Out of POP

Update: Yesterday the pool started to clear, much to my surprise. Today, I would say it is about 95% there. The FC is still holding at around 25ppm. I am adding water due to the excessive backwashing, hoping to dilute the FC a bit and the CYA. I haven't had to change the DE since two days ago...

Thanks mbar. I am pretty sure that is what happened. I under-shocked, and now have a big mess. I just bought this Taylor test kit a month ago. I thought that it was a good one. I hate to buy another one. But it appears that the kit does not allow me to test a high enough level of CL to know...

I am using the Taylor K-2005 kit. The kit goes up to 5ppm on the test bottle. The directions allow you to use 4.5 ml and multiply by 2, fill to 9 ml with tap water (with a max of 10ppm) and use a 1.8 ml sample fill to 9 ml and multiple by 5 for a max of 25 ppm. Not sure how to measure higher...

    I need help...Out of POP

Back to Dave I am backwashing because my DE pump generally runs between 8-12 pressure. It has been going up to 16, 18 and so on. I don't like to make the pump work so hard, so I tend to backwash when it is around 18 or slightly lower. I thought that would be helping clear the algae too. I can't...
