Slight leak in suction line. Is there a fix without replumbing??

I like your solution for finding leaks! The problem is that the prior owner built a pool house around the pump filter installation. They didn't think to furnish a floor drain...but then they went cheap on the roof by omitting roofing paper! Grrrr......!

Slight leak in suction line. Is there a fix without replumbing??

Many thanks, Duraleigh! I like the PVC solvent and cement. It sounds a bit more permanent than the plumber's tape, since it in a sense "welds" the two ends of the gap together. As far as identifying the source of the leak, how about removing the electrical tape I'd used, cleaning up the area...

Slight leak in suction line. Is there a fix without replumbing??

I seem to have a slight leak in the suction line; while the strainer basket does slowly fill up there is sometimes a little air being pumped. The previous owner plumbed the pump so that there is VERY little space between the Jandy valve assembly and the pump assembly. I think that the leak is...

    Waste line plumbing??

My thoughts exactly! Radiator hoses today last for.... many years, under really adverse environments. A pool house would be about the most benign environment for a radiator hose.

    Waste line plumbing??

I went by Lowes' to check out reinforced plastic hose, they had nothing in stock with a suitable inside diameter. The radiator hose did the trick! I cut out the offending length of poly pipe with my saber saw (often called a jig saw), cleaned up the cut and smoothed the edges with my Dremel...

    Waste line plumbing??

As a long-time shade tree mechanic, the radiator hose came first to mind. Looks like it will work!

    Waste line plumbing??

I have to re-plumb the waste line because it leaks at an elbow fitting. 1-1/4" poly pipe. The thought just occured to me: since the waste line isn't in constant use, and when in use the pressure is low, what about using automotive radiator hose, if available in 1 1/4" interior diameter...

    Filter pressure??

If the filter is leaking - apparently a hairline crack - the sand will be examined, so to speak, as it is emptied out of the leaking filter. The mpv is on circ; pressure gauge shows about 7 psi. Running on filter for a minute or two showed about 22 psi. Gauge is liquid filled, they last much...

    Filter pressure??

I'm facing a filter replacement. The current filter, a Pentair 145322, has sprung a tiny leak. Since the pump/filter is in a pool house, a leak is a problem, in any case the leak would probably get worse. This is a plastic tank, the leak seems to be on a seam. Checking a local dealer for a...

Aquarite only has power light on, all others off

A few years ago I'd replaced the thermistor. I wicked off the old solder and inserted the leads of the replacement into the PC board and with some difficulty soldered it in place. A few weeks ago I had the power light on but nothing else cited above. Following the troubleshooting chart I...

Experiences with SWGs other than Hayward's Aqua Rite

I've just repaired the main circuit board on my Aqua-Rite SWG for the second time with absolutely no technical help from Hayward. Do any members have experiences with other makers they'd be willing to share? If I switch makers at some point I'd naturally perfer one with a cell which would...

Bad main circuit board? Dealing with Hayward??

Acting on a hunch I reheated the solder connections I'd made several years ago to the thermistor. A "cold" solder joint can function properly for quite a while, then either fail completely electrically or become intermittent. Generally a cold joint will look sort of granular, rather than...

Bad main circuit board? Dealing with Hayward??

I am dealing with a probable circuit board failure on my Aqua Rite generator. All was well until a few days or so, but then ... no LEDs, or LCDs. On power up after the flow was established I'd get a brief display of LEDs indicating chlorination and inspect the cell, then nothing. I followed the...

    Pool RX??

David van Brunt's book Swimming Pool Care... speaks highly of Pool RX, a proprietary device using "chelated" copper compounds to reduce the need for chlorine, and is safe for salt water chlorine generators. Received wisdom has been that copper algacides are death for SWGs, apparently plating...

Test results change if sample sits after testing

I looked up the FAS/DPD kit on Amazon, and ordered it. No more trying do match colors with my aging eyes and varying light sources. I think it should be the extra money in terms of avoided frustration.

Test results change if sample sits after testing

Re: Easier way to test chlorine when maintaining higher FC Thanks for the user report! I'll re-test following your advice. I'd tried the salt strips; I consider them a waste of my money and time.

Turtle in the pool, what kind?

Snappers are unable to retract their head, legs and tail completely in the shell. Be careful with the bigger ones! They can chomp a small branch in half; your finger would be no problem! See this link: DEEP: Common Snapping Turtle Fact Sheet There is also a soft-shell turtle which I gather is...

    Possible bad salt cell??

Many thanks to all for the help! The pool is improving with the aid of lots of bleach. JamesW, I apologize for omitting the datum of green water! Somehow I had thought that would have been self-evident. It would be nice if the Cl test in the Taylor DPD kit had a more easily discernible...

Test results change if sample sits after testing

I've been using the Taylor DPD kit via Leslie's. I've also diluted the test sample 1 to 1 and then doubled the test result when the test results went off the scale. It would be nice if the Cl test were a "clean" titration with an easily discernible endpoint, as is the Taylor test for total...

    Possible bad salt cell??

I've never used any algae treatments with copper salts; they would plate out on the cell plates and ruin them. No ascorbic acid. As far as hydrogen bubbles from the returns the water is too green to tell! If it is working and making chlorine, why didn't any show in the water taken from the...

    Possible bad salt cell??

Just now I loosened the union downstream from the cell as it operated and collected a water sample. No discernable chlorine. Here are data from the diagnostic panel: Salt level display 3000 88F 25.2 v 6.34 a 100% 2900 inst salinity Change polarity 88F 25.1 v 6.49 a 100% 3100 inst salinity...

    Possible bad salt cell??

I will certainly try that. I'd tried it with the old cell, and measured essentially zero chlorine, despite good data from the diagnostic panel.

    Possible bad salt cell??

the old cell instant salinity was 2900 or 3100 depending on cell polarity, on 7/13. The new cell arrived on 7/15, was installed immediately and gave instant salinity of 2700 or 2800, depending on cell polarity. "New cell's instant salinity depending on polarity is 2800 or 3000, taken this...

    Possible bad salt cell??

Thanks for your response. As stated above, on 7/13 If it is generating the correct amount of Cl, why was the Cl essentially zero at 7.30 am this morning? I would have expected some Cl since there was no sunlight to burn it off, and the CyA is adequate. Okay, I'm putting 6 121 oz jugs of 6%...

    Possible bad salt cell??

I'm using the Leslie's Deluxe Poolcare DPD Test Kit, made by Taylor. I bought it in June of this year; I don't trust strips. The old cell's instant salinity varied between 2900 3100, taken on 7/13, depending on cell polarity. New cell's instant salinity depending on polarity is 2800 or 3000...

    Possible bad salt cell??

Well, I tested the water this morning at about 7.30AM. Chlorine essentially zero after the SWG ran all night at 100%. pH 7.6 Cya 70 Cl essentially zero Total alkalinity 80ppm Readings off the diagnostics, second column is reversed polarity. Displayed salt level is 3000. Temp 87...

    Possible bad salt cell??

After running all night at 100% Cl is essentially zero. Salt on the controller indicates 2900 ppm. I took a water sample by Leslie's and their electronic salt meter indicated 2800 ppm. Yesterday the Taylor salt test indicated about 5000 ppm. CYA is still low, about 30 ppm. Values on the...
