    Backwash Valve Replacement

Well, as it turned out I had to replace the whole piston assembly. I must have cracked the original one, because even with new o-rings it leaked out the top. New one installed and working fine now. Thanks to everyone who replied and left tips. It all helped. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

    Backwash Valve Replacement

Well, it's come to this. I'm either going to get a whole new valve, plunger, casing and all, or I'm just going to replace the core plunger. This old plunger of mine has a few problems from when I replaced the O rings back in October. I bunged up the cotter pin getting the handle off of the...

    Backwash Valve Replacement

Well, I finally got the core out of the casing. What I did was, 1) First I drained the filter tank, 2) then I disconnected the tank from the backwash valve, 3) Then I sprayed some WD-40 into the valve's both ports, 4) I let that soak a while, while I cleaned the filter grids, 5) then I...

    Backwash Valve Replacement

No, I haven't tried ZerO lube yet. I don't even have any, yet. I'll see if I can find some locally.

    Backwash Valve Replacement

My slider backwash valve is stuck. So stuck that I can't even turn the handle. So, I am planning on replacing it with a "Pentair 261152 Multiport Valve Kit 2in. Threaded" valve. First, I want to know if this is the right valve for my DE filter: 261152 Pentair Multiport Valve Threaded.jpg -...

    Black spots - algae?

Well, I got the black algae off, refill in progress. It's obvious to me now that the pool surface needs repainting. I am going to tackle that job later this year or in the spring. Sometime when the weather is more suitable. Right now we are still having 100 degree temps. Ugh!!

    Black spots - algae?

After refilling my pool, can I use the SLAM method to get it rebalanced? Or is there another recommended procedure? Oh yea, what is "shock level", referred to in the SLAMing procedure. http://tinyurl.com/lzrlk2b

    Black spots - algae?

The more I look at it, the more I think it is the paint coming off. I can remember this whitish look getting worse and worse over the last 5 to 9 years. It could be scale I suppose, but when I run my finger over it the whitish ares are smooth, and then the other areas are kind of rough, like a...

    Black spots - algae?

See the white blotches? What is that? Is that calcium scale buildup? They feel smooth to the touch.

    Black spots - algae?

I do have a picture of one of the spots. This was taken this morning, through the water. It's not a very good picture. I also have a lot of scale. The other blotches are clear places in the scale.

    Black spots - algae?

I'm getting ready to drain and refill my pool in order to reduce the CYA and CH. I also have three black spot areas that I can't brush out, I was wondering how to remove the spots after all the water is drained. Here are my test results from yesterday: FC = 8 CC = .5 pH = 7.5 TA = 150 CH =...

    Pumping station protection

Good point. Thanks for the input.

    Pumping station protection

Thanks for that input Jason. That shouldn't be a problem. The posts will be 8', with about 1.5 foot in the ground. That leaves the roof 6.5 foot high at the highest point (in the rear, next to the house). And, I envision all four sides to be open, with just enough siding (from the top down) to...

    Pumping station protection

Since I am not trying to achieve weather tightness, I was thinking more along the lines of an open sided cover. I'm thinking of a roof, and maybe the first two or three feet, from the roof down, covered. My main concern is protection from the sun, nothing else. See drawing for my idea of the...

    Pumping station protection

The photo is my current pumping station. I just purchased a new Pentair IntelliFlo variable speed pump to replace my old Hayward RS 1.5hp pump. My current pump is starting to lag when turning on, so I wanted to use this for a reason to upgrade to a more efficient pump. So, since I will be...

    PVC pipe question

Thanks for the tip. I went out looking for 2.5 inch PVC pipe. Neither Lowe's nor Home Depot had any. Not sure where to go next. Maybe online? Dunno?

Ah, okay. Off to the store I go.

    PVC pipe question

Sorry for not being more clear. That fitting on the south end of the valve is a tee. Down goes to the pump, right goes to an old spa line that's not used any longer. I want to eliminate that, and repipe from the valve to the pump. I will look into a coupler for that port, as you and Jason have...

    PVC pipe question

See the output port on the Jandy valve in the photo? I need to cut everything off from that Tee downward and put a 2" union on it so I can repipe all the way to the pump. My question is, after i cut the Tee off, that will leave only about a half inch of pipe to glue a 2 inch union onto. Is that...

    Lots of bubbles

Dave - you were spot on! Tonight, after getting home from work, I went out to do a backflush. In preparation for the backflush, while the pump was still running, I opened the bleed valve on top of the tank to let out all of the air. Then I left it open just enough for a little water to be coming...

    Lots of bubbles

Thanks for the tip Gary. I've tried doing that, but nothing changes. But, it's really hard to get a good bit of water on all of the connections, since everything is so cramped (see photo). But, when I shut off the pump, some water comes out at the input connection to the pump. Not a lot, but...

    Lots of bubbles

Hello - Real greenhorn amateur here. I'm not a nitwit, but just inexperienced with plumbing and pool hydraulics. I'm getting a lot of air in my pump basket, and I think it's coming from the suction side plumbing. See photo below. My equipment is very old, but I'm not sure just how old. This...

Am I buying the right backwash valve?

In the ad for this one, it says "ABS vs. the 261165 which is PVC". Is ABS to be preferred over PVC? http://www.poolplaza.com/P-PEN-263034-3184.html
