    Worst Opening in 15 Years...Help!

That's an inviting pool. Good work! Props to you for seeing it through and to the TFP crew for being so helpful. Happy Summer, everyone!

    Bleach price calculator

Just had this brought to my attention by a peer starting to use BBB. Another handy tool to add to our arsenal. I noticed Walmart went with 33% more concentrated (7.78%), but dropped the volume to 121floz for $2.98 (Indiana). That seemed expensive for some reason so I mentioned shopping around...

OMG! I got it all over me!!!

I looked up your filter and I didn't see a valve head on it. I assume cartridge filters don't need backwashed, just washed. With a sand filter, there is a valve head to switch between different settings. The system must be 'Backwash'ed on occasion to remove all of the stuff stuck in the sand...

OMG! I got it all over me!!!

Thanks for the support, all. I deserve all the razzing you can dish out. I'll look into the DE, Richard, as I don't entirely understand how it can improve see-all-the-way-across-underwater-without-goggles.

OMG! I got it all over me!!!

So, on my 4th year of having a pool and using the TFP method, I just started filtering my pool last week. First year was great, crystal clear, kids were in awe, wife made me my favorite dish at least once a week. Babies smiled, neighbors envied. Second year there was a little cloudiness. I...

How to convert my baqua pool to chlorine

Great to see you making the best w/ what you have, Frankie. I'm just chiming in for encouragement. Keep going! you can do it! Almost there! Just keep following the instructions, the TFP crew won't let you down. You might have already done something about it, but the dirt will just be easier to...

    pH keeps going up

See my sig. You can store it in the pool room as long as it's -AWAY- from any bleach/chlorine. edit: Well, I just clicked the link and it seems to be dated. Mixing Muriatic acid (Liquid fully saturated with Chlorine) and Chlorine creates Chlorine gas which turns any water it contacts...

Confused about where my numbers should be??

Please edit your signature to include your pool/pump equipment size/configuration. That way it's on every post. It's hard to break free from the pool store mentality. "Shock is something you do, not something you buy." Please read Pool School's guide on how to -properly- shock your pool...

Seriously...how can you argue with this?

Awesome! Great looking pool. Big props to TFP and BBB! On my 3rd year and working on my 2nd convert. ;)

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

Thank you, MITS. I tested CYA Friday and got a reading of 30. So it was just slow to show. Any ideas on what would take it so long to show or is a week and a half within range? I've been testing and balancing as needed. It really becomes second nature after a while. I'll post my weekly test...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

The directions on the bottle recommended an initial CYA of 40, but I was just going to 30 per 257wbymag's suggestion. The difference might be user error. I'm not sure. I put in 54oz (27oz twice). I didn't test CYA last night. I'll test again and see if it's just slow to show. I'll look on the...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

    I was at 9.5 after adding chlorine Sunday evening. I boosted FC up to 8.5 & 10 the last couple of nights with morning readings <1ppm difference. I was at 2.5 this evening. Sunday FC 9.5 @ 9:00p CC <=0.5 pH ~7.8 Monday added 28oz of MA @ 11a FC 2 @ 6p CC 0 added 96oz of 6% FC 8.5 @ 9p CC 0 pH...

Re: 1st time PO = trouble free pool, you can too!! This forum has taught me how to maintain a pool... In a week!! Thinking of the number of people this forum has helped is amazing. Thank you all for the advice and guidance along the way. I'm not going anywhere, just expressing my gratitude. You...

anyone having a pool party for the 4th of July?

The kids and I are hosting our first pool party ever tomorrow. Relatives are coming over for the usual fair; grilling, yard games, fireworks, BSing and SWIMMING!! I got the pool done just in time thanks to all the help here!  :!: :!: EVERYONE HAVE A GREAT 4TH WEEKEND :!: ...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

Whew! Hectic day. I got the top plates put on and they turned out great! I have painted all of them and it has turned out to be well worth the effort. I'll post pictures in the morning. I'm giddy as a chocolate-dosed school girl at a sleepover. My pool is turning out better than I expected...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

So that's how you make mustard gas! Just kidding, ofc. That's actually really really scary. I'll actually be putting that in my sig. I'll be sure to space out chems. when adding several in a day. Luckily, my FC is fine for now so I can skip it today. As always, great advice!

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

FAS/DPD test at 6:45am returned FC=11.5, CC=0 With CYA at 30, I should keep FC around 4, but never drop below 2. A little muriatic acid, get the top plates mounted and we should be ready to swim. What is the wait time after adding muriatic acid before it's safe to swim? No one will be getting...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

I just retested TA 3 more times (for practice and accuracy), wiping when I drip. 210 240 230 Average=227 :P I was averaging several tests on both TA and CH. Honestly, I was under the impression that a shock cycle was standard fare for a startup. I'm not sure how I got that in my head, maybe...

Strange TA results w/ TF100 kit

I just encountered the same problem. And here I thought I was getting good at following directions. Heading out to test the 4th time. Hopefully, it's not in the 400+ range again.

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

OK, I need muriatic acid. FC 2.5 CC 0 pH 8.0 TA 387 CH 255 CYA ~30 (this is assumed, not tested) I did the FAS/DPD this time for chlorine so I could get a CC reading. I added 210oz of 6% to get FC to 10. I'll consider this a safe shock until I can get another CYA reading on Tuesday. If you...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

I have a question, just for curiosity's sake. On systems with a waterfall, fountain, or spillover spa, does that constantly raise pH? Will aerating only raise pH to a certain level or is it a constant concern for those people with those features?

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

I put 27oz of stabilizer back in the sock and dunked it by the return. BTW, that's probably the cleanest sock I own now. FC was 1 pH was 7.2 Water is clear with a light sparkle. The frogs are singing my praises as I type. I left PH alone as my return is currently breaking the surface. I added...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

To me, specifically, no one, but algaecide is just a preventative measure, correct? I don't have algae, and I don't want any either. If it's going to be a week before I can figure out where my CYA is so I can shock at the appropriate level, I would like some protection against my pool becoming a...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

The first sock of stabilizer had a lump in the toe this morning, but after fiddling with it for a couple minutes, it whiffed out into the return stream. I'll get a couple more bottles this evening and fill the sock back up.

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

OK, I got the pump rebuilt and hooked up. I tested CYA and FC (I just used the Taylor daily as I was pretty sure chlorine was zero). :o SURPRISE! :o Both were zero. I'm 99% sure I did the tests correctly. Maybe I'm not as following-instructions-challenged as I thought. The Pool Calculator...

    1st time PO, testing huh!?!

At this point, I have the skimmer and return cut in. After hooking up my pump, I found that it squeals really loud. I dropped it off at an electrical supply house this morning for a rebuild. So now, I have a full pull about 24hrs into being stagnant. I think chlorine is a good idea, Ike. I'll...

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't added anything other than water so far. Is there a CYA I should shoot for before starting the shock regiment? (edit): After trimming the tree back quite bit, I get direct sun from 12:00 until about 19:30. I have, and plan on using a solar cover unless...
