    Reconfigure Skimmers and Returns?

Thank you. We have tall trees that drop debris into the deep end of the pool which is also the upwind end of the pool. Would probably make sense to place the skimmer on the side opposite from where it is. Is it ok to have a non-functioning main drain?

    Reconfigure Skimmers and Returns?

I am having the liner on our 20'x40' in-ground pool replaced next week, and am considering reconfiguring the skimmers and returns as long as everything is opened up. Right now, I have just one skimmer in the middle of the 40' stretch, and a single return located on the same side as the skimmer...

Water Loss At Night With Solar Cover?

Thanks Dave. It covers the entire pool except for perhaps 2 sq. ft. around the ladder. Will run the bucket test.

Water Loss At Night With Solar Cover?

I'm losing water to this nasty heat wave in the northeast, but also wondering whether a slow leak might be in play. I turned the pump off and put the solar cover down last night. When I checked this morning, the water was down a fraction - maybe 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch. If the pool is covered...

A Few Small Patches of Algae

Thank you CU and Jason. I should have shocked last night -- we had wicked thunderstorms this morning and it was generally not a great day. Will brush and shock as soon as the sun goes off the pool this evening and hope FC drops below shock level to allow for a swim tomorrow afternoon.

A Few Small Patches of Algae

Definitely didn't intend to brag in the other thread. Polyquat has worked for me on occasion and thought I'd mention it. Given my inability to stay on top of FC, I believe my water would be pretty hazy right now without it. Thanks for your offering your continued support.

Algae prevention when pool owner is not able to keep up FC

Re: Algae prevention when pool owner is not able to keep up I'm another one who occasionally lapses in keeping FC levels up. I defer to the experts on this terrific forum, but will say that polyquat has been my backstop. Expensive, but for me better than having to spend money on shock and...

A Few Small Patches of Algae

My pool water is crystal clear, but there are 3-4 small patches of dark green algae in the deep end, each about 3in x 6in or so. I think they've been there for a few weeks. Is brushing and shocking the only way to eliminate them? I know the answer is yes, but was hoping someone, somewhere may...

    CYA Level Still Low

Thank you all for your comments. Jeff - I feel pretty confident about the test and I used new reagent. Just doesn't seem right that I add 9 lbs. and the test is showing close to -0-. Suziqzer - yes, I added two 4 lb. containers and part of a container from last year to get 9 lbs. That dot...

    CYA Level Still Low

Will definitely hold off on backwashing after adding stabilizer, even if adding via stocking. Thanks for the tip. Yes, we had almost a foot of rain here too! I believe I added most of stabilizer after the rain. So if the test is registering a hazy -0-, should I just add a couple of pounds...

    CYA Level Still Low

I put the stabilizer in a stocking in front of the return rather than in the skimmer, so am assuming backwash not an issue?

    CYA Level Still Low

Should say that reading the test can be difficult for middle-aged eyes. Have to make sure I bring the reading glasses out to the pool. Yes, I rely on the sun to help me, or just a bright blue sky.

    CYA Level Still Low

Thanks for your replies. I don't have the container anymore but it was HTH conditioner/stabilizer from Walmart. I think I've seen elsewhere that it is approx. 97%. I last added it to the pool about 3 weeks ago, so should be fully absorbed. I've already added 9 lbs. Think I should start by...

    CYA Level Still Low

CYA level in our ~28k gallon pool at the start of the season was -0- (using a k2006 kit). Per the pool calculator, I added 9 lbs. of granular stabilizer to get the level to 40. We are going through a gallon of bleach a day, so I tested CYA and, though the test water is hazier than when I...

    Polyquat and Bleach

Thanks very much for your thoughts - I appreciate it. I read the wording on the bottle to mean don't add concentrated chlorine products to a pool treated with polyquat, but you helped me realize they likely meant don't mix them together in a bucket! I wasn't worried about a hazardous outcome...

    Polyquat and Bleach

Our pool is surrounded by tall trees that drop organic material into the pool daily, so I've found it very useful to add polyquat to the weekly regimen. After an initial high dose at the start of the season, I add about 3oz./10k gallons each week. I noticed on the label of Leslie's Algae...

    Winter Leak

Am still working on this problem and just had a thought that I'd like to run by the smart people here. When I closed the pool in the fall, I dropped the water level by means of a siphon. I put one end of a garden hose several inches down in the water and ran the other end out into the woods...

    Winter Leak

I posted the question above back in March when things were a little quiet, so bumping now that pool openings are in full swing. The water is still just above the return despite the rains we've had. I've looked along the waterline but don't see any cracks in the liner though will look again if...

    Kem-Tek 60% Algaecide

Hello all, Am getting to open the pool. Last year, I added polyquat to my regimen and it really helped. Not for everyone, but our pool is surrounded by big trees, so the polyquat helped me stay on top of algae. I found Kem-Tek 60% Concentrated Algaecide on Amazon for a decent price. Would...

    Winter Leak

I am in CT and have a 20x40 vinyl liner pool with one skimmer and one return. A couple of months ago, just before a big freeze, I checked the water level and it was just at the bottom of the skimmer opening. Since then, the temperatures dropped to the teens for several days and we had 15...

    CYA Disappeared?

One other quick question: with low CYA (10-20), would FC of 7.0 be too high for swimming? That's where we are right now and kids want to swim. Thanks.

    CYA Disappeared?

Thanks Dave. We didn't actually drain the pool -- just lost a few inches to evaporation which I imagine would have left the CYA in the pool. Good idea on adding enough to increase CYA by 20ppm and see what happens. Will try that. Thanks.

    CYA Disappeared?

Hi, I tested my CYA with a K-2006 kit 3 weeks ago and the reading was about 35. Since then, I shocked to get rid of an algae bloom and have started adding polyquat. In addition, the pool has received 3 inches of rain. I tested CYA again today, and the reading is -0-. I don't think a few...

    That Last 10%

Pool is clearing up nicely today -- I may want to run one more shock and overnight test to be sure. One strange thing: I tested FC after the sun went off the pool this evening and it was 9.0, down from 15.5 this morning. I checked CYA which I measured a couple of weeks ago at about 35-40, and...

    That Last 10%

Thanks very much Dave. We don't have a pool light, so don't have that to worry about. We do live in the woods and have tall trees on two sides of the pool, including one very tall one that has a couple of branches that hang over the deep end. The likely source of organic matter that launches...

    That Last 10%

Things are starting to turn for the better I think. Green/blue haze has turned to a blue haze and getting clearer. Readings last night: FC: 17.5 CC: 0.5 pH: 7.6 TA: 80 Reading before the sun hit the pool this morning: FC 15.5 CC: 0.5 pH: 7.4 Hoping that one more night of shock will finally...
