    Pump Advice

The water comes out when I take the pump lid off. I empty the basket (using the gushing water to rinse it) and then put it back in and put the lid on. This also helps with priming, as there's always water in the pump.

Hmm, we definitely don't have one of those. No ball valves, just a hose from the skimmer to the pump. A hose from the pump to the filter, and then one from the filter to the return eyeball.

    Pump Advice

Not sure if it's OK to revive old threads, but I finally got around to buying (and fitting) the above pump. I had to swap the cable with my old pump, as it came with a regular 3-prong plug, as opposed to a twist-lock. No big deal. However, I connected everything up, and switched it on. To my...

Great, thank you. I'm probably going to get the SP15922S, but still going to continue and try and understand the calculations behind it. It seems an important concept to grasp. Thanks all!

Yeah, I think that pretty accurately describes my setup. Thank you! If it's not too much trouble, how did you calculate that? I've been trying to understand your post on Hydraulics 101 and reading the INYO pools guide, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I'd like to try and understand it, if...

    Pump Advice

Great, all this (mostly) makes sense. So, the 1HP/2SP version (SP15922S) has almost the same specs as my current pump, with the exception of having the lower speed, which seems it will be better from noise and power usage standpoint. My main concern was that I didn't get something *too*...

Not really sure how to describe the sound. Like a starter motor maybe? I took it to the local pool store and they serviced it, but it sounds exactly the same. If it's the age of the pool, it could be at most 15 years old. We've saved up to buy a more effecient/quieter one. I'm OK with buying a...

    Pump Advice

Good stuff, thanks @Teald024. I had assume the 2 speed ones were not viable, because they all seemed to be on the higher side of the GPM. I'm having real trouble on even Hayward's site, to get the GPM rates in the specs. I like the idea of getting a similar size to the one we have, but running...

    Pump Advice

We're looking to replace our noisy pump, but I wanted to make sure I'm sizing the potential replacement right. Our filter is this one: So it looks like it's rated at 40GPM. Does this mean the pump has to be 40GPM or less? If so, it seems to limit my options somewhat. There seems to be one...

New Pool owner, not sure what to do next...

Hello all, Just wanted to stop by and update everyone. Last week, I popped into a different local (family-run/owned) pool store, as the pool was still green. I'm glad I did. Armed with all the knowledge I learned from this site, I was able to have an in-depth conversation about my pool. The...

I'll start taking photos in the morning when I test, and see if it helps. It *seems* like I'm making progress, but I can't be sure. I have no frame of experience, so the progress seems minute, if at all. Sadly, I'm not able to monitor the SLAM levels as much as I want. I measure in the morning...

New Pool owner, not sure what to do next...

Hi all, back again! So, I've been SLAMing since last Thursday. I topped up the FC level Sunday night and went to work (in too much of a rush to get the levels yesterday morning. Twins!). Got home last night and the FC was 13. Then I got in the pool and scrubbed it like a madman. I had goggles...

Then a day or so ago (been SLAMing since Thursday): Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet Sorry for using a different site, I hit some sort of limit for attachments. So, I'm starting to get a little disheartened. I'm keeping the FC levels up, but I don't see things improving too...

Thanks for your help. Hopefully I'm pretty close. FC dropped by 1.5 overnight, and CC is at 0.5. The water is still cloudy, but I know that will take running the filter 24/7. Fingers crossed! Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

Ok, cool. Just finished brushing the pool, and decided I would unbolt the steps and remove them. When we first inherited the pool, that was the hot-spot for algae. The back of the steps were pretty green. I'm glad I did. Although it's not bad, there's definitely pockets of algae still clinging...

I bought 12 gallons of the Home Depot 8.25% bleach. I've been keeping the FC at whatever level Pool Math has been telling me since Thursday and brushing every day. I'm testing every ~4hrs with my K-2006 test kit. I may have misread the CYA, but I've been keeping the level on the high side...

So, I'm in the process of shocking the pool, and I took a CYA reading and it jumped from 40 (pre-shock) to 55. I used the Pool math to recalculate the amount of chlorine based off this new number, just to be on the safe side. Is this normal?

I'm waiting on my test kit for copper and the K-2006 test kit. I'm going to buy a bunch of bleach today for the purpose of SLAMing the pool. My question would be, do I ignore Leslie's advive and/or the copper readings and work on SLAMing the pool to kill/control the algae? Then once that is...

Thanks for replying! Yeah, the first AND second test showed no chlorine. I bought a bucket of the chlorine pucks for the floating chlorinator after the first test, but it's clearly not increased the level at all. This has been somewhat of a mystery to me. I understand the need to remove the...

Hello all, Looking for some help. I'm a first time and new pool owner. We bought a house, and with it came an above ground pool (full details in my signature). Last weekend my father-in-law and I went to Leslie's (literally round the corner) and had the water tested to see where we were at. It...
