What kind of brush for brushing algae spots?

Hi all, Just now in the beginning stages of shocking a green, algae infested in ground fiberglass pool. I used a regular pool brush and did a decent job of knocking off some of the algae stuck to the walls. However, the circular looking spots act as if they don't want to come off with just the...

    Thoroughly Confused - pH Test

Dave, To make the matter even more confusing, I went to Wal-Mart last night and purchased an HTH 3-Way test kit and the pH was spot on 7.8...which is entirely inconsistent with both of the pool store readings? Also, I did make sure I was using the proper phenol red with each comparator block...

    Pool Opening - CYA Question

I plan to put CYA in a sock this evening and imagine it will be gone from the sock by tomorrow sometime with a little coaxing. Can I go ahead and start shocking my green pool this weekend...or will I backwash out too much of the CYA by starting this weekend? I was really hoping to get started...

    Thoroughly Confused - pH Test

What's throwing me is I've never seen this shade before...in the 3 years I've owned the pool. Why is it all of a sudden reading so differently?

    Thoroughly Confused - pH Test

I've discovered an issue that is brand new to me after successfully testing and balancing my chemicals in the same pool for 3 years. For whatever reason, I can't get a pH reading that corresponds to the color shades on the vial. I've used three different brands of phenol red and I get a very...

    Not sure about pH reading?

I got a full set of results this afternoon: CYA 50 TA 110 FC 4 CC .5 And I'm still getting that unrecognizable red color on my pH test...and I've used one full jug of 20 Baume 31.45% Muriatic Acid from Home Depot. I'm really lost on this one?? Any ideas? I'm not sure if I need to...

    Not sure about pH reading?

Shouldn't be the case...I've used two different brands of the 5-Drop pH tester...Taylor R-0004 and an off-brand from the Pool Shop. The results were the same.

    Not sure about pH reading?

I own a 17,500 gallon inground fiberglass pool in South Arkansas. Due to the cooler weather, I've been slacking with my tests. The other day I decided to test my pH and I got a very reddish color...one that doesn't fit into the color spectrum on the test vial. I assumed my pH was extra high...

South Arkansas - To Close or Not to Close

I live in South Arkansas and have a 17,500 gallon inground fiberglass pool. I'm considering not putting a cover on the pool because it's such a hassle pumping water off the cover, removing leaves, etc. etc. We also have new landscaping around the pool and it would be nice to enjoy the view of...

    Expected Free Chlorine Loss

I live in South Arkansas and we're getting 85-92 degree sunny days right now. My 17,500 gallon fiberglass pool has a CYA of 50. What is a reasonable daily FC loss? I'm losing around 3ppm a day and that seems excessive to me. What do you think? Thanks, Alan

    Not sure about these spots?

I'm sure this is a stupid question...BUT, we're not swimming yet so what is the best way to actually place and hold a vitamin C tablet on those stains? I'm sure there are creative ways to do it, I just can't think on any right now. Thanks, Alan

    Not sure about these spots?

I should also point out that I've had the FC very high (at shock level or above) for about 2 weeks and have noticed no change in the color or intensity of the spots. Thanks, Alan

    Not sure about these spots?

Can anyone venture a guess as to what these spots may be? I realize the clarity of the picture isn't great, but it was the best that I could do today. They are darkish-brown in color and will not brush up with a regular pool brush. They are both in the shallow end and deep end of the pool...

    Overnight Free Chlorine Test

I retested my CYA with my new solution a few minutes ago and I think it's probably 30. So with that being the case, you're saying it's very reasonable to lose 32% from 6:00am to noon? Thanks, Alan

    Overnight Free Chlorine Test

Do you think it's possible that my CYA reagent from last year could've gone bad over the winter? Also, how much chlorine would you expect to lose from 6:00am to noon in South Arkansas on a bright, sunny day, if the chlorine level began at 25 at 6:00 am. I just checked and mine was 17. I've...

Re: At Wits End - Frustrated I've used this method for a couple of years and have read the site at least 25 times. I am maintaining shock level throughout the process. However, there may have been a couple of times throughout the 3 WEEKS that I let it fall below shock level...due to weather...
