Ok, be honest, who brings their shampoo to the pool?

Well, the pool is about the only way we can get our son to get clean. He is afraid of soap and water, so you can bet the shampoo follows him to the pool. :)

Be honest, who keeps their FC levels quite a bit higher than recommended?

I do. Somewhere between target and slam works for me. If my target is 5 and my slam is 12.....anything between 5-10 is fine with me.

Why do recommended CYA levels seem high to me?

I maintained a 25,000 gallon pool for a few years, with the help of this forum, and it's members. We have since moved, and now have a small 3,500 gallon pool. I was always more comfortable maintaining the large pool with a CYA of 20. Wasn't that hard to keep the FC levels up, and was easy to...

High TA and good pH, should I lower TA?

The pH is 7.5 and seems fairly stable. My TA is very high at 180. Since the pH isn't fluctuating, do I need to lower it? Thanks, Ed

Summer Waves Elite with SFX 1000 pump. Can I run the pump full time?

A little nervous about running this cheap pump full time. When we had an in-ground with a good pump we ran it full time, because part time couldn't keep the pool clean. Is there a run time recommendation for above ground pools? Ours is 14' x 48", and holds 3,500 gallons. Thanks, Ed

Vacuum suggestion for Summer Waves Elite needed please.

Just put up a 14' Summer Waves Elite. What is a good vacuum hook up to use. I see that they sell a vacuum head, but I haven't fornd much about how to use it. Any info on that, or any other way, would be great. Thanks, Ed

Can I let the pump motor run 24/7?

We sold house/pool, and I'm maintaining the pool until closing in 2 weeks. Our pump motor is old (original equipt about 15 years old,), and this am when I went to turn it on, the motor didn't engage, and I heard a humming sound. I immediately turned it off, and tried it again, and it started...

Holes in liner, and we're moving, suggestions please. Pics!

Will try to keep this as brief as possible. We are moving this summer, have already bought a house, and our current house w/pool (pics) is listed with a broker. Unfortunately upon opening our pool last month, there were holes appearing in two corners, see pics. Is there any way we can...

Need new winter cover/tarp, how do I measure??

We've had good luck for years with our black tarp winter cover, but this winter's heavy snow, and last summers mice in the shed, tore it to bits. How do I measure for a new one? Out pool is 16'x36' with a 8'x8' L section. So basically we need at least 24'x36' of coverage. What size tarp (and...

    Solar cover thickness beware!!

Just wanted to let anyone that orders solar covers from solarcovers.com, know that the thicknesses have changed. What was sold as a 12 mil cover 3 years ago is now much thinner. I ordered the same cover recently that I ordered 3 years ago and was surprised to see that it was much thinner. I...

Funny, my neighbor might be getting the message.

I was walking in our neighborhood the other day, and my neighbor's babysitter, who happens to be a friend of mine, asked me to test their pool water. It was green. So I tested it with my T-100, and it came up 0 CL, and 0 Stabilizer. I gave him the basic scoop on what to do and told him about...

Thought I had it made.....cloudy water.

Just my rant. Had the best pool opening, got complacent, and didn't pay close attention to the chlorine levels. Water went from clear to cloudy in 2 days. So basically starting from scratch. Actually, less than scratch, the pool is cloudier than when the cover came off. Oh well, live and...

    Sweet pool opening this year!!

After last year's nightmare pool opening, (green water and 3 weeks to clear it) with a wet winter and early spring, and half the water in the neighborhood draining through our backyard and into our pool, we had a 150' curtain drain installed. It wasn't cheap, but this spring our backyard is...

How much torque on dial valve top nuts?

To winterize my filter I removed the Jacuzzi 7-way dial valve from the top of the valve body. It is held on by 6 screws and nuts, with a square o-ring in between. I reinstalled it today, and there is air sucking in at the o-ring seal. It worked fine last year. I'm just afraid to crank down...

Algae on pool cover due to warm (hot) early spring.

We live in upstate NY north of Syracuse and we use a black tarp for a winter pool cover. There is about 6"-8" of water on top of it. With March temperatures way above normal and lots of sun, there is a lot of algae forming on the cover. Is it a problem? Just to illustrate how warm it has...

Is a CYA of 25 ok?

Last year we suffered with too much CYA in our pool. This year it has been much better, and the water has been crystal all year. I just checked the CYA level and it has slipped below 30, to about 25. Is this ok? Why is the recommended level between 30-50? I have some stabilizer I can add...

    Pool is finally clear!!!

Just wanted to share the good news, and to encourage anyone who is having a hard time clearing their water. After about 3 weeks of continuous shocking, running the pump 24/7, vacuuming, and brushing, the pool is finally clear. All it basically took was chlorine, elbow grease and patience. I...

Can I use this drain pipe? (pic)

This flexible pvc pipe, w/threaded male fitting, comes out of the ground between the pump and filter. The pool came with the house we bought 2 years ago. Last year I asked the pool company that originally did the installation what it was for, and they said that basically it was a drain below...

How do I test for metals?

There is a cloudiness in our pool water that I can't seem to get rid of. All the test #'s with my TF-100 kit are basically good. With all the rain in the last 6 weeks, we have had several thousand gallons of ground runoff enter the pool. It's a light yellow/green/brown cloudiness (hard to...

    Who installs French Drains?

We need a fairly large French Drain to divert ground water around our pool. I don't have time to do it myself. What type of contractor does these? Where should I start researching to have this done correctly? Thanks.

Ground water is coming in around the skimmer collar!!

We've had a lot of rain this spring, and water table is at the surface. Today took the skimmer cover off and noticed dirty ground water flowing into the skimmer from where the cover collar joins the skimmer body. I'm assuming this isn't supposed to be happening. Should I wait until the water...

    Can't get rid of cloudiness...frustrating...latest test #'s

Opened the pool late last week, and a lot of ground water/dirt had gotten into the pool from the April rains. The whole bottom of the pool has a layer of brown mud on it. I finally vacuumed the shallow end, and only part of the deep end, because I can't see the bottom. I did what I could...

Can I remove the pump basket when vacuuming to waste?

I'm assuming the answer is no, because I never know what's at the bottom of the pool that I can't see. I was asking because there are some leaves that I'm vaccuming, and I keep having to empty the pump basket. I'm going to try and get whatever leaves I can see with the leaf basket.

Can't do much until the liner settles.

Not really looking for responses, just wanted to share the bummer of having a lot of water behind the liner. We had mega snow this winter, and over 8" of rain in April. Lots of ground water, and mud, entered the pool. Would love to vacuum the mud off the bottom, but I can't until the liner...

Can lime be used to raise pH?

I know this question is probably "out there," but I also garden and have quite a bit of agricultural lime lying around. Just wondering if it could be used as a pH raiser? Feedback appreciated (after you stop laughing.) :)

Can I just use the skimmers to clear up the pool?

We took the tarp off the pool yesterday, and the water is dirty filthy brown! Last year it was good, but this year with all the rain, we had ground water flooding into the pool, under the tarp, several times. I tested a sample and there is 0 FC and 0 CYA. I know there are some leaves in the...

Slightly confused...how do I blow out the lines?

I have 2 skimmers and 2 returns. The skimmer lines join at a valve on the inlet side of the pump, and the return is from the filter divides somewhere underground for the 2 returns. After I drain to below the returns, how do I use my shop vac to blow out the lines? Thanks.

How much do I run my pump now?

Now that we've stopped swimming for the season, should I continue to run the pump, and when is a good time to close the pool? Thanks.

Highly recommend solar cover and reel

I was a little skeptical about how happy I would be with the solar cover and reel we bought this spring. We purchased a 12 mil. blue cover and a presto reel. Let me say that it's one of the best things we ever bought. The solar cover works great, and the reel makes putting on and taking off...

What's a good CYA for my area, upstate NY?

I live in Central NY, near Syracuse, and was wondering what a good CYA level is for me. My CYA has been a bit high, 60-70ppm, and I've been whittling it down during the summer (the 2.5" of rain we had this morning should help.) We have a solar cover, and sunshine is at a premium here. I use...
