Lightning strike, waiting a week for repair

For anyone in this situation based on feedback for sump pump, all of the sump pump models indicate that they have oil in motor and are not recommended for pools because they release oil. So, we found the smartpond model waterfall pump from Lowes for about $169 max output 2000 GPH, no tubing or...

Lightning strike, waiting a week for repair

Good idea for the sump pump! Will get to Home Depot tomorrow. We only have a Barracuda cleaner which relies on the pressure from the pump to move, so unfortunately don't have that option. I guess I could go swimming to move the water around after brushing the sides...

Thanks BPerry! Sounds like consensus to not worry about other stuff besides FC.

Lightning strike, waiting a week for repair

Thanks Jark87, I think my husband ordered one from Amazon to replace the surge protector but reading the warranty info gave us pause that it should be installed by licensed person yady yady. Not sure if this was to happen again if they would cover because we installed? He thought the same...it...

Lightning strike, waiting a week for repair

Hi everyone, we had severe weather in GA yesterday and had a lightening strike which fried our surge protector on the pool (Intermatic Surge protector, which was installed 4/2020, just outside their 3 year warranty!). The panel will not turn on, nor pump and filter. The pool company cannot come...

    Algae prevention and solar cover

Thanks CrystalRiver, our CCs were never high or a problem, the highest was 1. It's just when covered in early spring it had a hard time maintaining FC, so we started doing the SLAM. Mostly with cover off during day but would cover at night. Then couldn't get handle on it so have left cover off...

    Algae prevention and solar cover

For the past few years we have really been pleased with TFP guidance and have been successfully maintaining our pool. We started using a solar cover a few years ago to warm it up (no heater) and prevent water evaporation during summer if we were traveling. No problems; replaced every 1.5 yrs or...

Concrete deck, coping and liner repair/replace?

Hi Maddie, Thanks for the message. We couldn't tell if the leak was from the skimmer but with a 1 month wait, we can see it now. Under the skimmer return the liner has pulled away where three screws are. There are now 1 cm gaps between the skimmer and the liner. I am assuming that is where the...

Concrete deck, coping and liner repair/replace?

Not sure this is the right forum for this question... Owned a pool for 2 years now, we have the chemistry down, and have replaced much of the original equipment that failed during our time here. However, we have noticed that we will soon need to replace our liner due to a few leaks and tears...

Uh oh, what to do with meddlesome mom who messed with system ?

My mom is here visiting and knows nothing about pools. We had our Barracuda vacuum running in the pool today and while I was away at an appointment she decided to go for a swim and physically pulled the entire thing out of the pool...while still connected and running. When I came home...

    New home with a pool

Matsango--I want to encourage you to keep up with the SLAM and testing until you pass the OCLT-- and read about SLAM on this site if you haven't already-- As a newbie from last June I can say that using the TFP methods has been a great thing for our pool. We had a hard time moving into a new...

keeping pool open for winter, preventing leaves in fall

I haven't been on the forum for a bit because the TFP method WORKS GREAT! Clean, sparkling pool all summer. Thank you, fellow TFP bloggers :p We decided to keep our pool open for the winter, and in reading other posts, the take away I have seen is: a) FC doesn't change much due to less sun, so...

Inspect Cell... But Cell is 9 weeks old

Okay-- so the borax may have clogged the cell, so, do we just rinse it or do we need to do the whole 1/4 part muriatic acid and water rinse? Thanks,

Inspect Cell... But Cell is 9 weeks old

Hi All, Have only been maintaining a pool with SWG for a short time, so your collective advice is appreciated. Moved into a house with an old SWG cell, replaced 4th of July weekend, levels have been maintained using TFP method, no issues with cell after initial installation. Decided to add...

High FC after starting SWG and adding CYA

Ok, thank you, I had it back to 20% during the day from 11-4 on 7/7 and before bed it was FC 10, CC 0 pH 7.5 TA 85. Friday 7/8 at 6:30am it was FC 10, CC 0, and I let the SWG run from 7-4 at 20%. The FC at 7:30pm as of 7/8 was 7.5. I think things are good since no overnight loss yesterday...

High FC after starting SWG and adding CYA

Update today at 7am the FC was 13 (6pm last night, sun still up wasnt planning on doing overnight, FC was at 16). So, should I set the cell to run at something really low like 20% for an hour?

High FC after starting SWG and adding CYA

Yes, we had large FC loss both during day and overnight after adding CYA, which was odd. Our overnight FC never was a problem after slam, so why would it suddenly have changed? Thats why I wondered if CYA was making FC unavailable as it became mixed in....or if it signals a problem. We also...

High FC after starting SWG and adding CYA

I think I know the answer to this but just need confirmation. Been posting and learning for about a month now and have found TFP methods intuitive and better than pool store advice. New house, new pool 1 mo ago. SWG cell old, not working. Pool not balanced, followed tfp recommendations. Got...

    SWG High Salt/Amps

I wanted to post a final update; it seems people don't post their resolutions! Got the salt level up to 3200, turned it on last night and let it run last night. It ran! Amps were a bit high at 6.9 but it was running. Wow! FC went up 4ppm overnight. CYA has landed at 50... It seems I should add...

    SWG High Salt/Amps

Thanks for the tip about the current limiter. it does appear to be an issue with the control board that we have after reading, but I hope that isn't the problem. It seems too complex to do on our own?!. For the replacement board, I thought they don't make these Aqualogic boards anymore? I...

    SWG High Salt/Amps

Hello All, Getting my pool online after purchasing a house with it green, and equipment not working. Current readings as of this AM (tested with the good test kit by me) were:. FC9.5 ...CC 0... CYA 53 (added 3 lbs yesterday when it was at 42, this reading is probably 2 days shy of the actual...

New house, new pool, bad SWG

Sounds like a plan! Heading to Boston for a conference, once I get back we'll plug in. Tried several stores yesterday for pool salt (Walmart, Costco, Lowes, Home Depot), all of them are out of it. Lowes guy said Solar Salt will be fine. I looked online and did some reading, seems the jury is...

In middle of SLAM and questions

Hm, it was early AM when I checked CYA, so no sun up creating shadows-- it was shady early morning light yesterday at 6 something AM. But, like I said, I'm now out of the testing solution for CYA test, so its going to have to wait till I can get replacement solution. And, I'm out of time for...

In middle of SLAM and questions

"How much did you lose overnight?"... it typically goes from FC of 17 to 13 or 14 each night (10pm till 6am). "How are you getting a CYA of 43?" I have the kit and do it myself in the shade... Shake up the 7ml of chemical with my 7ml pool water for 30 seconds, squeeze it into the tube with...

In middle of SLAM and questions

Didn't pass overnight test. Something is wrong. Pool is clear, has been clear for days. Have had no CC. rechecked CYA. 43. People who write about starting their slam from green sludge seem to take this long, but our pool was not green sludge. It had a tinge of green. It is on day 6.

New house, new pool, bad SWG

Okay, so found the manual (THANKS :) ) read it, found out how to troubleshoot it. Seems that we should try out the new salt cell to see if we can get a reading. But, with it being out of commission for so long, will this burn out the circuit? I am not an electrical person, just have read that...
