I can't find a CYA Thread with a Pic of a "Good" brand. (Found it!!)

For what it is worth, I have been using this (from PoolGeek?? I don't remember exactly) last 2 season and they are "ok" - not sure whether the brand issue but my CYA wouldn't increase for a few days then suddenly spike up. (e.g., 20 for a few days after adding / completely dissolved from the...

Iron stains - an $850+ adventure (so far...) - Need help

As for the 10% walmart - this may be coincidence but the walmart Chlorine was not as effective (e.g., not clearing the water as quick or at all) and yes, cost-effective using 12.5% unless 10% is on same (I bought them on sale in the past but ended up spending more to get the 12.5% instead :-) )...

    Can you lose CYA?

Thanks for the input. Probably chlorine breakdown is the main culprit as the water temp has been around 85 at the peak. Another "funny" thing is that my CYA was around 30PPM, added less than 2 lb, then 2 days later found my CYA to be 80. Not sure my additions in the past (3-4 weeks ago)...

    3. A great point....especially for those of us in the US :) I actually didn't even realized kPa was my dial until now.....

    DE getting into pool

I think phandrews meant 9.5....I don't think you can actually get to 95 :)

    Is this normal?

@1poolman1 Just received a bottle of GLB. Do i "just dump' it in the pool or should I treat with some ascorbic acid first? At the tail-end of SLAM, and FC is at 10 now.

CYA - can you lose it?

Yes, that' what I suspected based on past experience, however, we didn't get much rain despite a few thunderstorms coming through (e.g., while our next town get 5 inches, we got less than an inch). I didn't have to drain / waste water much this season so far, hence my questions. Plus, I added...

    Is this normal?

Yes, sir!! I have been fighting three things at the same time last few days and as you suggested, SLAM is first...then DE...then rusty water...I was going back and forth between ascorbic acid and liquid chlorine which negates each other :) Oh, not to mention CYA decreasing and Ph going down...

DE coming through return - clogged or broken?

Have to been able to resolve this? 1poolman1 is also helping me out as well.

    Is this normal?

Got it..and I do see DE settling at the bottom and some in my Polaris bag (initially thought this was washing soda I put in for Ph balance)...and this will be the first time using the vacuum to get the DE back in the filter (I only used the vacuum when I open to get the algae out). So I would...

    Is this normal?

sounds good...by the way, assuming everything is working properly, how long before my pool clears up from the residual DE? As I am at the tail end (hopefully) of SLAM, and hard to tell whether the cloudiness is due to excess / residual DE vs. algae. My FC so far is holding well (FC of 5 and...

    Canadian wild fires

Aside from Ph, any other impacts from this wild fire / ashes to our pools? For some reason, I am having a hard time maintaining the balances this season (e.g., "sudden" cloudiness just a day after crystal clear water, rust stains - on-going, CYA no increasing after pounds of CYA added, etc.).

CYA - can you lose it?

Any insights on why my CYA is dropping although I am adding more? We did have a few (2 inches?) of rain during that storm around July 4th but I also added more after that....

    Is this normal?

great insights...by the way, do we really need a DE filter grid specific cleaning solution or something like spraying / soaking in general purpose cleaner such as Purple Power work (diluted).?

    Is this normal?

Understood....when I googled, a few sites recommended Muriatic Acid as an option but will refrain from it.

    Is this normal?

Thanks for the feedback and just cleaned the media again (no rips / tears). Just googled and will soak them overnight in muriatic acid / water (1:5 I think). Thanks!

    Is this normal?

Going through SLAM. 1. Cleaned the pump filter last week 2. Backwashed and re-filled DE 3. When I dumped DE into the skimmer, I noticed white powder coming out of return jet (not the typical salt-based Chlorine) 4. Just opened and saw this - I think everything is intact Not sure why DE is not...

    Can you lose CYA?

I am also experiencing the same - i.e., CYA is not increasing at all, in fact, decreasing even though I added like 15lb over 3-4 weeks. And Yes, I have been adding 20+ gallons of liquid chlorine....would be interesting to get some expert opinions...

    CYA is missing

I was about to post the same occurence. My pool was drained about 50 - 60% last season to repair rusty walls inside the liner and was "filled" with rain when I opened. Added pounds of CYA (more than 15 lb total so far in 3 differet times) yet CYA level keeps going down. In fact, I added about...

Iron stains - an $850+ adventure (so far...) - Need help

Wow...you just decribed what I am going through (have vinyl liner though), including the amount of liquid chlorine I have added (stay away from Walmart 10% jugs though - my local pool store has a 12%+ 5 gallon jugs which is waaaay better). I also posted separately about removing the flow to /...

Recurring Iron Stain -- Looking for permanent solution

This is an excellent point. I am having issues (last 2-3 season) with rusty water and been dumping ascorbic acid like crazy (every 2-3 days). Repaired the rusting wall inside the liner last season but this season is worse. Been using Morton's or Clorox salt over the years, and didn't know...

Help: algae bloom I can't control

Understood..my set up is rather simply (no fountain) and I think too much ascorbic acid is reducing the efficacy of liquid chlorine (dealing with the rust stain at the same time). Let's keep at it as this forum helped me maintain the water over the years. Just having the toughest time this...

Can a pool heater (and/or its heat exchanger) cause rusty water?

Sounds good....I have used Natural Chem and Jack's (Purple stuff) in the past. Will get to it! Will run out and get 2 more jugs of chlorine (10 gallons total) :)

Can a pool heater (and/or its heat exchanger) cause rusty water?

Yes, a great point.....I think that's the challenge as I may need to pick the right poison here.....rusty water vs. crystal clear water :) I usually add ascorbic acid when FC is close to zero (I was thinking the opposite - i.e., high chlorine reduces the efficacy of ascorbic acid). Any...

Help: algae bloom I can't control

@martink I feel you as I am going through a similar exercise. The my water was crystal clear on July 4th (when we dipped in the pool with friends) then it "suddenly" turned cloud the next day. Since I was able to clear up the water in the past with less than 5 gallons of liquid chlorine, I...

Can a pool heater (and/or its heat exchanger) cause rusty water?

No rust stains in the pool now as I have been applying ascorbic acid very frequently last / this season (every 2-3 days) - just dumped a few pounds this morning. I can post a picture in a day or two when it comes back. And yes, I have checked our water and no rusty water from the source /...

Can a pool heater (and/or its heat exchanger) cause rusty water?

Thanks and Yes, that's what I am thinking (e.g., install a bypass valve or completely bypass the heater) but wanted to confirm as I am not 100% sure whether the heater (the copper / nickel) is actually causing the rusty water (the google search says "copper / nickels" do not rust but they can...

Can a pool heater (and/or its heat exchanger) cause rusty water?

Here are some pictures of my pool, including the skimmers and the light - no significant rusting here. I did replace a small nut which was rusting (and disintegrating) in the pump filter with a stainless one. I did put in a bottle of metal out and have the CuLator (4.0) in the filter basket as...
