Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

I brush at least once per week and swim more often than that.

Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

I have been on the fence about adding them. I liked the pros. The cons don't bother me: I don't have pets; 1 time cost of about $80 is no consequence to me. But the deciding factor was that in spite of being zealous about my water's chemistry, I had a small algae bloom recently. One day I had...

Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

@pooldv Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to know. Maybe the guides on this site for adding borates should be updated to emphasize that point. Concerning TA adjustment (or any other adjustment) the why is more important than the how.

Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

Okay, but specifically for borates: Should my TA be lower than it would be otherwise before adding borates?

Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

I have been caring for the pool since early May, so a few months. Most of that time I've had the TA around 80-90. During that time I've never had any major issues with Ph stability and certainly no rises in Ph. MY Ph tends to creep down slowly, which I fix by aerating because it's free to do and...

Optimal TA for Bleach/Vinyl before adding borates

What is the optimal TA range for a liquid chlorinated vinyl liner pool? I see conflicting advice. I'm adjusting TA in prep for adding borates via boric acid. So you want to add borates to your pool--Why and How says TA should be 70-80 ppm. Pool School - Recommended Levels (and pool math) says...

Adding water - Auto Shut Off

I want to automate adding water (most important pool chemical) to some degree. Right now, I know how many gallons it takes to add an inch and I know how to measure flow rate using a bucket and a stopwatch and then determine when to go turn the hose off. What I'd love is to attach a device to...

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

2-3 days of aerating (see my youtube video in my previous post) 8 hours each day brought my Ph from around 7 to 7.5 in my 22k gal. pool. I wanted to include this info for anyone considering the acid slug (information on the web still advocates the acid slug method). A little $ to build some...

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

PVC Pool Aerator - YouTube Added MA, measured TA decrease, and trying to get Ph back up (so I can do it again). Ph is 7.2 before beginning aeration. I'll check Ph again tomorrow.

Hose doesn't fit new vacuum head

Wrapped w/ duct tape and got it to fit snug.

Hose doesn't fit new vacuum head

My hose has hard plastic, unflexible fittings on the ends. I'd have to cut those off to use a hose clamp. I don't want to do that, nor fool with hose clamps each time I vacuum. - - - Updated - - - Other ideas I had were some sort of water proof tape passed around the vacuum head coupling to...

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

No problem. I just wanted to check my own understanding. When I point my returns up I get serious agitation of the water. I have good return pressure and the eyeballs are not to deep in the water. I will experiment with both methods and post findings, w/ some video.

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

@RobbieH I'm confused. I just added MA to lower Ph and TA. I want to raise Ph. I thought aerating is the only way to raise Ph without affecting TA. Did you mean raise?

Hose doesn't fit new vacuum head

New home with vinyl-liner pool came with a vacuum head for concrete pools (rectangular w/ wheels). I bought a triangular vacuum head for a vinyl liner from Lowes. The coupling on the new head looks and measures the same as the one on the old vacuum head, but when connecting the hose to the new...

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

I'm in that process right now. I think going to build an aerator from pvc to go on a return. Like this one. Should I expect this to be faster at raising Ph than pointing the eye-balls up?

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

Cool. Now I know what the myth is called. I have a vinyl liner, not plaster, but I don't want that much acid sitting on anything I own.

Lowering Total Alkalinity Without A Ph Change

The method explained in this video claims that TA can be lowered without a significant change in Ph by stilling the water, pouring MA in deep end and then waiting 5-6 hours to begin circulating. What do the experts here think?

    New to TFP

Oh yeah. I forgot to say welcome! I'm new here, too, and was just busting at the seems to show off some of the knowledge I've gained since being here. This forum is awesome.

    New to TFP

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here, but just want to let you know that your "salt system" is a "chlorine system", unless you don't have a salt-water chlorine generator, in which case you just have salty water. BTW, I just visited St. Augustine in March for a software developer conference at the...

New Pool Owner Getting Started - How much water?!

Total newb here. I bought a new home with a pool. The previous owner told me the pool held 40,000 gallons. I wanted to be sure of the volume so that I could make accurate chemical adjustments. I used a couple of the pool volume calculators found on the web to find out if 40,000 gallons was even...
