Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Hi all. Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I found the problem and solved it. My pump motor was frozen stuck upon opening the pool this year, so I needed to get a new pump. I went with a pentair 1hp superflo 2-speed. My electrical company has a rebate for it, so I ended up paying about $100...

    Dolphin Nautilus Plus and Algae

I suppose my problem description and question wasn't well expressed. The algae I am referring to is the brown/dead kind that falls to the bottom during the SLAM. I have the TF100 and am keeping the FC high enough to maintain the SLAM for my CYA level. Currently, my CC is pretty much zero (1...

    Dolphin Nautilus Plus and Algae

I recently purchased a Nautilus Plus and it does the job of picking up debris very well. However, even with using the fine filter cartridges, the algae on the bottom of the pool doesn't get caught by the filters. Instead, it blows through the impeller out the top, kinda like a smokestack. It...

Dolphin Nautilus Plus powering off before cycle is complete?

It has happened to me as well, but each time the blue light stays on the power supply and the filter cartridges were really full. Not sure if there is a shut-off for full cartridges or not.

What is the best website to buy a Dolphin/Maytronics robotic cleaner

I just bought a Nautilus Plus from Amazon. I specifically called Maytronics before purchasing and they verified that the warranty is GOOD for the Nautilus and Nautilus Plus when bought from Amazon. I did not ask about other models.

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I understand now. I was under the impression that a more powerful motor would would be able to proportionally move more water through the filter while clearing algae. But, if any motor would end up limited to the same flow through the filter, then I can see why changing my motor would be a...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Yes, when I added the full dose of DE and waited about an hour, the flow was definitely less. I see what you are saying and it makes total sense. Would a more powerful pump be reduced to the same flow on my setup the same way (collecting tons of algae)? Is this why you are saying a more...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Yes I stopped the shock when my CC was .5. I also bought some DE a few days ago, and it helped a bit, but reduced the flow quite a bit. It took about 2 cups to get the gauge to go up the 1 psi recommended in the article on this site, so I have been using about 1 cup to keep the flow going a...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

When I was SLAMing the pool, I used the Tf100 kit to test every couple hours until the FH held steady. Poolmath told me that shock is 16, mustard shock is 24 @ CYA 40, so I held it at 20 until the pool cleared up. It took about a week for it to start to clear up, and it finally was clear...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Yes. I opened and SLAM'ed the pool a week ago Thursday, and the pool is finally getting clear. I figured getting to 8 hours per turn over was the overall goal of the pump and filtration system. Pretty sure mine does not move that much water. However, if you think the pump and filter I have...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

That pump has a very different set of performance curves. I guess I will have to do some more homework on pumps before I settle on something. I was hoping to get away with a motor switch only, but it sounds like I may just need to look at an entire pump. I know my pressure is "high", but I...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I guess I should have been more specific. The actual motor I am looking at is an A.O. Smith ECM16CU, which shows it should be a direct replacement for the super pump wet end. It looks almost identical in specs and computer interface to the Supermax VS, and the pentair site was the only place I...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

That is good news on that front. I will probably look at a VS motor for next season. The one I am looking at is the 1.65 HP that is used on the Pentair Supermax VS. It bolts right to the Super pump housing...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Picked up a new cheap gauge from Leslie's, and it reads about 20.5-21ish psi. If I turn on the 3/4" feed to the slide, it drops to a solid 20 psi, if not a hair under. I am definitely getting better flow since removing the chlorinator. I am going to look into a Liquidator, since it has...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Ok, so I replaced the chlorinator with straight pipe. No change in PSI. Nothing. Eyeballs or not, it stays at 22 psi. I used 2 different gauges and the psi reads the same. However, the perceived flow is definitely higher after removing the chlorinator. This does not explain the lack of change...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I will remove the chlorinator and replace that area with straight pipe and look into an off-line chlorinator. I will also check the pressure without the eyeballs. Its about to storm real bad here in STL, so it may not be until tomorrow.

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Ok, the suction side through the filter only is 8 psi. Adding only the chlorinator brings it up to 12 psi. Adding the rest of the return brings it up to the full 22 psi. Is the chlorinator the problem or is there something later on in the return line that is the issue?

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I'll put just the chlorinator on and report back the filter psi here in a little while.

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Actually there is a union that attaches the valve for the return. Taking off the chlorinator and looking in the pipe, it tapers to about 3/4 of an inch where the chlorine feeds. I would imagine this is the choke point and the source of the high pressure, since this is the only return. Should I...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

The small "tee'd" line goes to the water slide, which I forgot to mention. There is a union right before the chlorinator that you can't see in the picture. The PSI dropped to 8, which Mark mentioned would be post filter. What exactly in the chlorinator should I be looking for as a possible...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

No check valves. The multi-valve works correctly as far as I know. When I pulled off the top to do the "deep cleaning", the gasket seemed OK. The outer circumference of the gasket was not glued down, but the inner "spider legs" seemed to stay put. If the whole thing should be glued down...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I think mas985 is the go-to for something like this. Is it proper etiquette around here to simply message them or just wait for them to possibly chime in? Also since I put up the original post: I found a shot motor in the corner of my shed that is the A.O. Smith replacement motor for the Super...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

I actually found the deep cleaning how-to shortly after I first posted. I did it, and the sand wasn't too bad (i replaced the sand beginning of the season last year). The flow did seem to improve a bit, but it still seems weak. As far as the pump: from my extensive reading, it sounds like...

Possible Insufficient Pump and New Pump Possibilities

Hello all. I have lurked around the site/forum for a couple of seasons now and have run into a problem that needs to be addressed. I purchased my house with the pool early last year, so I have had a full season and the start of this season to try and learn what I needed to to make the pool...
