Good use for old trichlor tablets

We got a new liner this year (so brand new poolful of virgin water) and we had a LOT of trichlor tablets (yah- the old hockey pucks we all hate). Anyway, instead of adding a lot of stabalizer and then using bleach and wasting the trichlor, we just kept using trichlor until the CYA came up to 50...

is SWG it really worth it?

We currently have a traditionally chlorinated pool and are entertaining the thought of converting to SWG. Aside from the initial cost and debating minor corrosion potential, it seems that a LOT of people have trouble with their SWG systems: insufficient chlorine production, error readings, cells...

inground sprinkler system- mowed a sprinkler head

we've got one 9 inch sprinkler head in the front yard that gets eaten by the mower at least once a year. Yesterday I cut the grass on a higher level and thought I'd have "clearance", but no- mowed the top off. Going to Lowes later for ANOTHER replacement- hoping to find maybe a 7 or 8 inch one...

Instant clouding after adding sodium carbonate (pH+)

My chemistry was: FC 15 (on it's way back down after shocking after a pool party) pH 7.2 TA 100 CH 150-200 CYA 30 Water temp ~90-92 I like to keep the pH around 7.4 and usually use borax to raise pH, but was out of it, so I used pH+ (sodium carbonate) to raise the pH. When I put it in, it...

How often to backwash sand filter to avoid channeling?

I usually backwash my sand filter about every 7-10 days even though the pressure gauge indicates that it's not needed- mostly to prevent any channelling. Is that often enough or too frequent?

Cooling the pool- water to warm!

It's not even June and our water temp is 90 degrees! Been running the pump 24/7 with the jets pointing upward for surface agitation and the fountain on. Any other ideas out there for cooling the water? This year we have a new darker liner (last one was almost white). This one is med/dark blue...

theory on borates and algae from another website and TA ?'s

On askalanaquestion.com, their explanation on how borates affect algae is that it reduces the amount of CO2 that the water can absorb and basically suffocates algae. The site was very limited about other benefits, but did recommend levels of 30-50 ppm. With my new liner (in for about a month...

? about adding DE to sand filter

Sometimes to get extra polished, crystal clear water I backwash the filter and then add about 2-3 cups of DE to the skimmer and monitor the pressure. Works like a charm- especially after heavy rains, heavy pollen, increased bather load, also seems to clear up "sunscreen cloudiness". Other than...

    pics of my pool

Here's some pool pics to share. These are with the old liner. We've replaced it since then.

Here's what I wish I knew before owning a pool!

Other people: 1) They tend to invite themselves over for a swim in your pool a lot. 2) They expect you to provide all ancillary items- sunscreen, towels, floaties and are offended if you don't offer them. 3) They expect you to watch their kids (who can't swim) for them. 4) They expect you to...
