Awesome, thanks for the quick replies. Will help them commence with a SLAM!

    Help with neighbor's pool

I finally have our pool levels good! I'm helping a neighbor who is dealing with some issues and can't seem to maintain chlorine levels in the saltwater pool. I originally walked them through the SLAM process, but after testing the water I think high TA may be the culprit. FC 0 TC 0 pH 7.4...

    Low pH and TA

After a few days of filtering and vacuuming, the water is crystal clear and the blue stuff is gone. Levels all looking great.

    Low pH and TA

No, but based on your message I’m guessing that might be in my immediate plans. Unfortunately we have to haul in water as we’re on well water.

Clearing up nicely this morning... oddly the precipitate that's dropping to the bottom of the pool is BLUE.

    Raypak ordering/availability

Anyone know of a retailer/website with quick availability on a Raypak heater? We're looking at 300k+ BTU, Cupro Nickel, natural gas... I can install myself. The local pool companies (if they will even callback) seem to be 3 weeks+.

    Low pH and TA

We do not have a chlorinator and the variable speed pump runs 24x7. Here are the latest levels. I'm starting to see precipitate dropping to the bottom of the pool with slight improvement in cloudiness. I'm guessing it will clear up in a couple days. TA 120-130 PH 7.5 FC 2.5 CC 0 CYA 60

    Low pH and TA

No. Used tricolor in the past until we had a CYA issue and had to drain/refill. Since then have done pure bleach and last year mostly cal hypo. We've had the pool for 6 years and it's had low pH since day one... I just ignored it since the pool was crystal clear. Learned my lesson... from...

    Low pH and TA

Ah, I understand! I'm a little gun-shy after the low pH destroyed our pool heater. Was working to get it up quickly. I will post new numbers shortly.

    Low pH and TA

Understood on the carbonate... good to know it will dissolve! Not following your second point. Our pH did rise and is now right where I want it to be.

    Low pH and TA

So the air compressor for a couple of hours had zero affect on the ph and I didn't want to run my nice expensive air compressor for days on end. Dumped in 16 pounds of Borax this morning (per pool math) and voila! Sitting right at 7.5. Unfortunately the water really clouded up after the...

    Low pH and TA

60 psi pumping into the water! Pretty sweet! Now just need to see if it brings up the pH.

    Low pH and TA

pH currently measuring 6.8. I’m going to give it another go with the air compressor and ensure we leave the cover off during the day.

    Low pH and TA

Man, I tried everything short of an air compressor to bring ph up a couple years ago and it did nothing. Do I need to just setup a large compressor and let it go for a while???

    Low pH and TA

Yes, TA is about 100 so I need to be very cautious on the baking soda now. Starting to see the pH come up as well.

    Low pH and TA

Thank you, sir. 12 pounds of baking soda 12 hours ago barely touched it. Added another 12 this morning and will test again this afternoon.

    Low pH and TA

Using a kit I purchased here for testing. Ph is below the reading of my kit but the strip does register it at 6.2. CYA 40. Just opened the pool and was planning to use cal hypo.

    Low pH and TA

I’ve been trying to get my pH up for a couple years and it appears it came back to bite me. Acidity in the water appears to have destroyed the pool heater. TA is quite low as well and not sure how to handle that. Appreciate any recommendations! Ph 6.6 or less (measured 6.2 on test strip) FC...

    Water level drop after rain

Just to follow up... topped it off today and water level is holding fine. We had so much rain that it pushed pool water out into the auto cover housing and drained it off.

    Water level drop after rain

We received an insane amount of rain over the past couple of days. It took about 8-9 hours to pump off the pool cover yesterday... and when I opened the pool the water level was at the bottom of the skimmer! I’m assuming all the rain water somehow forced out pool water? Maybe u set the cover...

    Unable to SLAM!

On opening the pool this year, I quickly got the water clear and with very little CYA, was comfortable using trichloro tabs for a while. The TC was staying around 3.5, but with six of those tabs in the skimmer, I figured they were maintaining the chlorine levels and it would quickly flatline...

    Treat low PH?

Pool is crystal clear and I’m treating with only 10% liquid chlorine. FC 2 CC trace PH 6.9 - 7.0 CYA is just over 40 TA is 120 Is there any reason to work to bring the PH up? Pool is still taking a fair bit of chlorine but otherwise no issues. I’ve tried aerating several times and can’t...

    Laminar from landscape bed?

After spending the last 6 weeks learning the ways of TFP, I have my pool perfectly balanced and running on just bleach! Feels great to get it under control - now for the fun stuff! When we built the pool, we ran a return from the pump area over to one of the landscape beds in preparation for a...

    Taking control of pool maintenance

Good point... could take half the summer and constant CYA testing to get it right. I haven't seen this anywhere on TFP, but is there a good place to order full strength liquid chlorine online by the case? Happy to pay a little more to not constantly run to Walmart!

    Taking control of pool maintenance

Thought I would post a quick update to this thread! Thanks to all the great advice on this site, I've gotten the pool pretty much under control (one issue left to solve). I was also talking to a neighbor recently who is having the same problem. The pool store actually told him that all pools...

    Chlorine test procedure

I have the TFP test kit... as I’ve been slamming, I noticed that after adding the powder and mixing when I’m adding the reagent, the water will clear and then slowly drift back to very light pink. If I add enough reagent it obviously goes completely clear and doesn’t drift. Am I right to...

Restarting after partial drain (high CYA)

Thanks to the guidance from this forum, decided to take decisive action and do a partial drain to get our CYA under control. Although our pool was clear, it would not hold any FC no matter how much bleach or shock I seemed to pour in. We opened the cover Sunday night to find a cloudy/milky...

    Pool drain process

There was no FC. I’ve done that test SOO many times hoping to see something lower, so I absolutely know that the test result was different tonight. I did the diluted and standard test. Anyway, pool is now half drained. I treated with two jugs of Clorox and I’m calling the pool installer...
