Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

I could not be happier!!! The plastic is nearly clear so you see the blue of the sky. It has a reinforcing through it in a diamond shape. I sealed in the sides with regular 6mm plastic where my fence is, so now I'm as close to airtight as one can be. The temp difference between inside and...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

Finally got my Hayward HP21104TC low abient Heat pump installed late last week and just in time, because temperatures haven fallen a lot at night. The heat pump was installed by a Hayward authorized pool company, but they would not do the electrical connection because they were expecting a...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

Well I just ran into my first problem with the solar coils I build. To my horror today I saw a huge stream of water shooting up. I inspected and found that squirrels have chewed through. I also noticed that the 2" PVC pipe feeding the coils had deep chew marks from the squirrels. I did not...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

Hi there, you might not have seen the other posts. I will only be supplementing with the solar collectors. This is all a grand experiment...I love to tinker. So right now, in New Orleans we are in the low 80s during the day. The sun is getting low on the horizon for sure, so the angle to the...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

Im beginning to think your correct. I had been away a few days and no solar on during that time. It dropped 8 degrees after a cold front moved in. TO my surprise it was still comfortable once I got it back up a few degrees. I guess you get acclimatized to the lower temp. Im toying with the...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

Average temps for us is 64 in Dec and 62 Jan which are the coolest months. There is a low ambiance I was also looking at. The Hayward site is terrible, very little info and hard to get full descriptions. Sometimes all the heaters dont even show up. Yesterday I called tech support and was on...

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

I thought 92 would be too hot for me, but now I love it and try to keep it there. No prob going lower, but under 86 now it seems too cold to me.

Gas or Heat Pump - Austin, Tx - daily pool use

I'm in New Orleans. I did my own solar and never cover the pool. This is my first year and thus far I am super pleased, but now I will be going through my first fall and winter with my solar collector which Ive added onto this summer expanding the capacity. Afte a few months of use in the...

    we have a Bee problem

What kind of bees? Are these Carpenter bees or honey bees, or other? If they're carpenter bees, they do not sting and they burrow into wood such as fences. I have a problem in my yard but I finally got control of them this past year. Never seen any coming for water though.

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

Here are two photos I just took. one is the pool temp in the deep section where I draw from. When using the solar I close the skimmer and draw from the main drain. The second picture is the output as it enters the pool. For convenience sake I have the probe inserted through a hole that I...

    Recommendation for Heat Pumps

OK you had me going for a minute...."red stick" never heard it called that before. I dont know why it says Baton Rouge....no I'm in N'Awlins. - - - Updated - - - Thats great to know.....I'll have to call a gas installer to have them come out and take a measurement. Would be a lot easier...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

pabeader YES......I was getting 1 degree under optimum conditions.....hot day...clear sky. Again...I am about 45 % shaded. This was EXACTLY why I built this, because I didnt want to wait another month to use the pool Having said that, the pool temp increase due to the sun has nothing to do...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

As I said many times in the past, I sometimes under optimal conditions get a single degree in temp change on a sunny day in March. I am about 45 percent shaded, and I DO NOT use a pool cover at all....only during winter to keep leaves out. I think I know how to measure water temperature. WHen...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

If you were referring to mine, I stand by my measurements, I get a 3 - 4 degree temp change from 10:30am - 4pm at 15 gallons per minute. You're sq ft looks too small. In any event I have 1000' of 1/2" tubing on 2 systems, and then another "experimental" one that consists of 300' of 1" PVC...

    Recommendation for Heat Pumps

After reading about some of the comments for heat pumps elsewhere I'm beginning to wonder if that is a good option for winter where temps get into the 50s. Another consideration is this small Hayward H-Series 100K BTU nat gas heater. Problem is that running a dedicated gas line would be very...

How long is swimming season in Central Florida? Should I build now?

That is so FUNNY!!! but so TRUE! I'm from the north myself, and I remember swimming in the ocean in Miami in April when I first moved there. People thought I was crazy....nope....just grew up on a SPRING FED LAKE in the north....after that you can just about swim anywhere! 20 something...

    Recommendation for Heat Pumps

It would only be one of the four sides that I would not have a lot of clearance. Above is no problem. I think like others who said, it would marginally affect performance. Anyone have these units and can recommend?

    Recommendation for Heat Pumps

While solar has worked amazingly well, this year with El Nino I am sick and tired of the ups and downs of the pool temp because of all the rain. Ready to throw in the towel and get some good old fashioned fossil fuel power. I'm looking at these 2. Anyone have any experience? Any other...

How long is swimming season in Central Florida? Should I build now?

Cant swim until June???? How could that be possible in Tampa? I'm swimming in New Orleans now and the water is 84 all be it is assisted by solar even though the weather has been horrendous this year. Being a former Floridian, I am sure that the water will be in the low 80s before June. Having...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

No problem......filling a 5 gallon bucket from the outflow at the pool and timing it with a stopwatch. Fills in 19 seconds. Very simple to do because the pvc pipe coming from the roof runs above ground and then using a 90 degree elbow goes over pool wall into pool.

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

OK so I checked my numbers and I was off by a decimal point....you're right, 300,000 would be blistering! The BTU calculation should be 30,000 btu per hour. I have about 40% shade on the pool. Before I put the solar collector on I did not see any real change in pool temp from the sun, and with...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

Give me a day or two to put the numbers together. I'd like to know where I might have gone wrong. But, if I am truly getting a 3 degree change in pool temp in a single day (I said 3 - 4 per day not 4 to 5...I think your referring to what I said I was getting for diff between the pool and...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

Measurements are uniform. I'll get my data and upload it when I get a chance. Never calculated BTUs before so unlike the Global warming crowd, I'm all ears to full "peer review". If I'm wrong please show me where. If what you are saying is true....IM GOING TO PATENT IT!!! In the end Im...

Anyone know recommended GPM flow for skimmer in 100% position?

I had complained to the builder that there appeared to be a restriction. It seems to me that their answer was to put these restrictors on. The guy they sent to put them on said he didn't know why, just that he was told "to get them on ASAP". Reading some of the posts above I think I...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

I am getting 300,000 BTU out of this system. I was very careful in the calculations. I left nothing to guesswork, I calculated exactly the GPM from the solar return. It was 15GPM. Using a digital thermometer very accurate, Temp of water from pool was 74. Temp after passing through the...

Solar Would you do it again/Is it all that they advertise?

your right! but that is not a problem for me, rarely gets to freezing here and if we get a rare freeze warning, then I woudld just run water through them until it passes. But for northerners your right, you would have to blow them out really good or run anti freeze into them.

Anyone know recommended GPM flow for skimmer in 100% position?

This is what I have. I've inspected it, and I dont see any indication where something else would attach. Also, though there is definitely a blockage in the tube at the bottom of the skimmer, I get a tremendous flow from the jets. A few of them the flow is so strong that you can almost swim in...
