Hayward sand filter drain plug leaking

The drain plug on my Hayward sand filter was leaking. Teflon tape and plumbers dope wouldn't fix it. The solution was to epoxy a 1" threaded female coupler and then use a 1" plug. Everything was available at LowesDepot for less than $10. It was a fairly easy fix once I figured out what to do.

    A.O. Smith UST-1102 replacement parts

I took apart a UST-1102 pump to try to replace the bearings. Unfortunately, a few of the bolts broke and it may be impossible to get them out. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a replacement bell end, thru bolts, and the flange that sits behind the front bearing and is bolted into...

How do I install a drain safety cover

I have an old Anthony Sylvan inground plaster pool with a 5 1/2" main drain opening. The drain cover is seated on a lip on the drain opening and there are some tabs on the underside of the drain cover that hold it in place through friction. There aren't any screw holes. How can I install a...

Main drain - what is this?

I closed my pool today. In doing so, I blew the main drain line out using a compressor. This usually causes the main drain cover to come off because it is not physically fastened down. When I looked into the main drain, I saw a piece of plastic pipe sticking into the main drain cavity from...

Need help retrofitting new main drain cover

My plaster inground pool has simple 5 1/2" main drain cover that stays in place using friction. There aren't any screw holes. My wife wants to replace the cover with one of the newer style covers that won't kill the kids. My problem is that I'm going to need to have some place to screw the...

    CYA test results

When you dissolve CYA in water, does it actually start working right away or does it take time to start working? What does the CYA test measure? Based on the answer to the first question, is it possible to measure CYA in the water that isn't working?

    Innefective bleach?

I opened my pool on Saturday and it didn't take long to get everything balanced nicely: FC 4 CC 0 PH 7.5 TA 90 CH 260 CYA 45 Then, last night, I added 60oz of clorox which was the correct amount to keep my pool balanced all last summer. This afternoon, I was down to 3 FC. I'm using bleach...

    Main drain line clogged?

We just had a hurricane and it dumped a lot of debris into the pool. The polaris is doing a good job of cleaning up. The main drain was covered with debris which I cleaned off after shutting down the pump. Now, I notice some air bubbles in the filter basket. I have ball valves for the main...

    Opening numbers

I opened my pool last week. Somehow, my PH had risen to 8.2. CYA went from 75 to 30, which was ok as far as I'm concerned. I added some acid to bring down the PH. Today, I get the following: FC: 6 CC: 0 PH: 7.6 TA: 90 CH: 250 CYA: 30 BORATE: 30 I think that this looks pretty good. This...

    Corroded pool wall inserts

I have 2 metal anchors embedded in my pool walls. They are there to clip a rope across the pool. Similar to these: http://www.recreonics.com/cup_anchors.htm These anchors have corroded away and now the unplastered concrete behind the inserts are exposed. I would like to pry the remaining...

    1st full season with BBB

I started BBB last season. This was my first full season using BBB. I opened to clear water and didn't have a single water quality issue the entire season. My expenses were $8 per week for 3 jugs of clorox and one jug of muriatic acid for $10. My TF-100 test kit lasted 2 seasons - now I need...

    Ducks

Any good advice on how to keep ducks out of your pool? The polaris seems to spook them when it is running. But I can't keep it running all of the time. Non lethal suggestions only, please.

    Opening #s

Wow! After using BBB for the first time last year, my pool opened very well. Here's where I stand after adding a jug of bleach and running the pump for 2 days: FC: 7 CC: 0 TC: 7 PH: 7.8 TA: 130 CH: 230 CYA: 85 I'm going to add a bag of cal-hypo to raise the FC to 10 and increase the CH a...

    Test from covered pool

Before covering my pool with a solid cover on 10/10/09, my tests were as follows: FC: 13 PH: 7.8 TA: 120 CH: 220 CYA: 90 I pulled back the cover to test the water today: FC: 3 PH: 7.8 TA: 80 CH: 160 CYA: 90 I was surprised that I still had FC. Is the drop in CH normal? The CYA will go down...

Ball valve is hard to turn

The ball valves that control the flow from the skimmer and main drain have become very hard to turn. In fact, one of the handles broke off in my hand. Ouch. Here's the replacement part that I need to get. http://www.a1poolparts.com/-strse-2569/ ... Detail.bok What can I do to make the...

Going to close tomorrow - numbers ok?

I'm planning to close the pool tomorrow. Here are my numbers. Are we good to go? FC 13 CC .5 TC 13.5 PH 7.8 - 8.2 TA 120 CH 220 CYA 90 Due to leaves getting into the pool, I've been keeping my FC high. I stopped adding bleach 2 days ago to let it get back down to a normal level. I think...

    Chemicals for pool closing

My pool gets covered with a solid cover. I'll keep it open as late as possible until the temps are in the 60s. The closing kits that are sold at the pool store include a stain preventer and a non-chlorine floater. I've used this in the past but, like most other pool chemicals, do I really...

    The kids' feet

Every year, we have a bunch of kids in the pool for parties. After a few hours, some of the kids have blisters and cuts on their feet. I'm pretty sure that the problems are caused by a combination of being in the water for a long time and walking (not running!) on the concrete deck. Could...

Chlorine Demand Test = 83 lbs!

My 15,000 gallon plaster pool is having a chlorine demand problem. The local bioguard dealer ran a chlorine demand test and came back with 83lbs of their burnout extreme which is cal-hypo 47%. I'm not going to use the bioguard product because it is too expensive and cal-hypo is going to raise...

Opened pool. TA & pH very high. How?

I opened my concrete pool yesterday. TA=400, pH=8.5! I'm going to be adding a lot of dry acid to the pool over the next 2-3 weeks to try to fix things. How did this happen over the winter? I use a solid cover. My closing kit included a floater with white pucks inside - I'm not sure exactly...
