    lead content of brass

hi folks, i have been building my tub setup using, in part, 3/4" brass valves, flow meter, fittings, and so on. nearing the end of the build i was alarmed to find that a nipple i bought was labelled unsafe for drinking water. this may be a direct consequence of my living in california. in any...

will this cast iron hydraulic valve rust too much to use for bathing?

i have a nice cast iron valve which is rated for water (Unitite 135020). i know it wouldn't fly for potable water, but does it work for a pool or tub? a little bit of rust, i'm sure i can catch in the filter, but if any has experience with cast iron in their plumbing, i'd like to know how it went.

installing fusible link in a heater that lacks one

hi folks! someone wise pointed out that my early '80s heater has no fusible link in its millivolt circuit. OK, i thought, that's easy enough to add for extra peace of mind. i bought a "Jandy Laars Pool Heater Fusible Link Assembly R0012200". one thing it says on the side is "152C", so perhaps...

    materials suitable for flexible lines

hi folks. i bought a coil of flexible PVC hose here for my tub install, and soon after happened to see a small tub plumbed entirely with vinyl tubing. i read up and learned that vinyl is PVC, so their heat rating is the same. the vinyl seems easier to work with and less expensive; some even have...

has anyone used an anti dog barking device?

we have neighbors with a yappy dog. they are fine people but the dog is intolerable. i read today that there are ultrasonic deterrent devices that listen for a dog's bark, then emit noise to annoy or scare them into not barking more. these devices seem to cost $50-$100. has anyone used one and...

    please vet this plumbing flow

here's what i think i'm doing; what have i missed? tub >> drain tee valve >> fill tee >> pump >> thermo/mano meters >> filter >> heater >> thermo/mano meters >> chemical injection tee >> flow switch >> water meter >> check valve >> aeration tee >> tub in case it matters, the tub is _above_ the...

bathing electrical safety with a non-pool pump

hi folks, to keep water temperature nearly constant at a low level of noise, i want to pump continually, at just a couple of GPM. i have done the math on the temperature of water coming out of my small gas heater and the PVC should be fine. pool pumps are generally way too big for this...

regularly changing some of the water

has anyone tried or heard of doing a gradual drain & refill cycle, instead of periodically changing the water? since i am committed to autofill, autodrain is a natural possibility. around here, it costs $4 to fill a 500g hot tub and i might change the water every month. this is the same rate of...

    autofill backflow prevention, below grade

hi folks, i have a fill valve (not an anti-siphon one) in my design connecting the domestic hot water supply, which isheated on demand, to the hot tub loop. the equipment is mounted lower than the tub will be installed. i put a brass swing check valve at the hot water supply, and of course the...

compression fittings OK on flexible PVC?

hi folks, i know flexible PVC cannot be used with barbs and hose clamps, but it can be seated in compression fittings, right? thank you! (my motivation: ease of disassembly. knowing myself, i am likely to want to change things around later.)

smaller inlet orifice as poor man's massage jet?

working on the inlet/outlet placement for my hot tub, i realized i could put a couple of small orifices around the tub at back level for the inlets, which would not be too different from massage jets. i know it would increase the system head and so make the pump work harder, but maybe these...

pump size adequate for backwashing sand filter

hi folks, i want to use a very small pump, run continually for my tub. i have a lower-threshhold flow switch to replace the one in the heater. however, not sure about the pump size yet. doesn't it take more pressure to backwash a sand filter than to clog it up in the first place? how much more...

heat at low flow rate & pressure switches

hi folks! for my tub, near the master bedroom, i'm hoping to keep pump noise way down by using a low flow rate, maybe even lower than the exorbitant variable-speed pumps will go. i calculated that 5 gpm at 30KBTU/hr would give me a nice temperature rise in the 5 gallons of 12.5 degrees F. the...
