PVC replumb: easy option or hard option?

Replumbing to the left of the new Tee next to brass gate valve (hopefully to become a PVC ball valve). As you can see, no open areas of pipe to the right of brass valve. All fittings! I don’t want to rip out and redo that whole top line between the brass valve and the compression union far...

    Difficult plumbing repair!

Okay smart people, I need advice. See photo below. I’m replumbing the pressure side after pump due to a new variable speed pump as well as some more long-standing leaks I’m tired of patching. I’m replacing a stuck brass gate value, too, and that’s my issue. It was originally plumbed in to...

    Hayward Slide Valve Leaking (Suggestions?)

I have a Hayward Sand Filter with a Hayward Slide Valve. Has been working fine for a few years. Yesterday the slide valve started leaking as pictured below. I removed the water and half the sand from the filter, slid it out, took both o-rings off and bought new ones, lubed them up, hooked...

Hayward Sand Filter Tank Lip Warped

Not a happy camper. The top lip of my Hayward Sand Filter (S311SXV) has become deformed and no longer will hold a seal even after experiementing with different tightness to the flange clamp. (Disregard the rescue tape in the photo below.) Are there any options besides getting a whole new tank @...

Yet Another "Pump Losing Prime" Thread

Yet Another "Pump Losing Prime" Thread I have a problem with my pump losing prime after turning off. Here is the description. Let me know what other details I can provide to help in diagnosis. (I can take pictures if it would help.) 1. Pump loses prime after it runs its daily cycle...

Why I use a vinyl-pool style vac head on my pebbleTec pool

Since it is hard to take a photo, I've created this idealized comparison in photoshop, but it pretty much tells the story. Using a vinyl-pool brush style head takes a new technique that takes getting used to (so it doesn't get stuck and not want to move when you are pressing straight down), but...

    Rapid pH rise

I've been neglecting pH the last couple of months, but am currently trying to tame it. It was about 8.3, and I added a gallon of acid on Saturday morning and got it down to 7.5. It rose the next day (yesterday) to 7.8, so I put another gallon and got it down to 6.8. This morning I checked again...

Stubborn pH just won't come down!

I've read through all the old posts on this subject, and I know the answer will probably be "just keep adding acid and the pH WILL come down eventually." Current levels (Taylor K-2006 with freshly purchased pH drops): TC = 7 FC = 7 pH = 8.3 TA = 110 CYA = 40 CH = 250 Water Temp = 90 My tap...

Was it dust, or yellow algae?

I just finished a total drain and refill here in Phoenix. After a week I have everything balanced out, the CYA up to 50, pH is 7.6, and water is crystal clear. However, when the pool was totally empty and dry, I washed down the walls of the left over "dust" that I was having a hard time...

    Increase Calcium Hardness?

Here are my numbers this morning: FC = 5.5 CC = 0.5 PH = 7.4 CYA = 25 TA = 130 CH = 100 OCLT = 0.5 24-hour chlorine loss = 2ppm I just did a total refill last weekend and water is crystal clear. I added granular CYA with the sock method Mon/Tues, so it has been about four days since the powder...

    Stuck Zone (In-Floor Cleaning System)

I have a Quik Clean (version 1) in-floor system in a 12,000 gallon in-ground pool. The gear box does not want to advance zones. I have had this happen once before and there seems to be two reasons why it happens: 1. Pressure too high (not an issue this time around). 2. Turbulence in the gear...

Adding muriatic acid with no returns

I don't have returns (in wall). My pump return system goes completely through the in-floor cleaning system pop ups. So what is the best way to add muriatic acid in this situation? For bleach I generally just pour very slowly around perimeter of the pool, with pump running of course.

Call me a CYA risk taker.

First of all, thank you TFP for finally ending about 7 or 8 years of battling a less-than-stellar 12,000 IG PebbleTec pool, which was never crystal clear and perfect. I had simply come to the conclusion that is was not possible for me to have perfect (or even near-perfect) pool water. At best is...

    No Pool Returns (wall)

I have a Shasta in-ground pool, 12,000 gallons, pebbletec, connected hot tub, with a sand filter and 1.5 HP single speed pump. My pool was built with in-floor Quik Clean pop up heads, but no wall returns. All water is returned through the pop ups. What I want to know, is this a normal way to...
