Friend pool stored, TA through the roof!

My family and I went to a pool party today for my son's soccer team. The home owner was complaining about how he just replaced his DE filter with a sand filter because the pressure would max out after a day or two and need back washed and recharged. My thought was latent algae but the filter...

SWG's bubbles; contents and dissolution vs flow rate?

Today I cleaned the plates on the SWG cell. After getting it all hooked back up, I was enjoying a cold one while watching the increased bubbles coming out of the return. This got me thinking. It has always been my observation that more bubbles make it to the surface when the pump is on low...

    K-1000 sample size?

Can someone tell me what the sample size is on the k-1000 ph/tc test is? I'm away from my kit and trying to measure a volume of water without a graduated cylinder. Sent from my Nokia Lumia 1020 using Tapatalk

Adding a DE filter after the sand filter?

For awhile I've been dissatisfied with the small particles that still make it through my sand filter. I've followed advice to add DE to the sand only to be disappointed to see the DE itself returning to the pool because the sand isn't even catching all of the DE! Today I was cleaning out the...

    Useful CYA conversion to ammonia?

I noticed there have been quite a few cases this season where all the CYA was converted to ammonia. I've read that this happens because of a bacteria found in soil consumes it and releases ammonia as waste. In the cases we see, this is always bad. Usually resulting in high chlorine demand...

    Nuvo H2O?

I just saw part of an infomercial for NuvoH20. It claims to be a salt-free water softener system. It claims to do this using citric acid chelation. Would something like this help pool owners who have hard fill water and/or metal laden well water keep metal sequestered and the pH down...

Switching Pump from Low to High produces dirt from the return!

This morning I switched the pump from Low to High to do some vacuuming. To my horror a brown jet of dirty water came spewing out of the return into my otherwise crystal clear pool! The pump had been running on low for over 24 hours due to sub-freezing over night temperatures. I have a...

    TA readings with high FC?

I know pH readings are skewed when FC is above 10. Are TA readings also affected? Example: 3/27/14 FC: 15.5 CC: 0.5 pH: 8.4 TA: 120 4/8/14 FC: 5 CC: 0 pH: 6.9 TA: < 30 (turned at 2 drops, slightly pinker at 3)

Accurate pH test during shock levels with R-007?

Can R-007 be used to neutralize high FC before performing the pH test to get an accurate reading or will this further interfere with the chemistry?

    Extended OTO color comparator?

Clearly there are definite observable differences in color after 5ppm. Why isn't there an extended OTO color comparison reference for FC levels above 5? It wouldn't be that hard to make. I'm half tempted to start taking photos of the OTO vial anytime I get a whole number result (6.0, 7.0...

DIY Solar Heater from LDPE ?

Has anyone had any experience making a DIY solar heater out of this type of Poly Drip Tubing ? It's 1/2 in. x 1,000 ft. Drip-line. It's made of low-density polyethylene and coated with a UV inhibitor. It's rated up to 80psi which is plenty for my purposes.

CH in a vinyl liner pool?

I found a 50lb bag of Calcium Chloride at the local hardware store on clearance for $5 so I bought it. I have a vinyl liner pool and my CH is around 50. Along with everything else this gives me a CSI of -1.17. Is there any real benefit to adding it to the pool as far as corrosion goes or...

First tests of the year - low pH!

Should I be adjusting the pH now or should I wait until the pool is opened and equipment reconnected in the spring? FC: 4.5 (floater with tri-chlor tablets all winter) CC: 0 CYA: 70 pH: lower than 6.8 (probably 6.6) TA: 40 CH: 40 (vinyl) BOR: 40 SALT: 2380

    Home from vacation results..?

 After getting home from vacation with SWG and pump on timer: FC: 14.5 CC: 0 pH: 7.8 CYA: 60 TA: 60 Before we left: FC: 6 pH: 7.4 Should I bother adding acid or is the high pH a side effect of the higher chlorine? I'm assuming it's safe for the kids to swim since I'm below shock...

Maximum chlorine level from a given salt level?

I was thinking the other day about chlorine production from salt and wondered, what is the relationship between ppm of sodium chloride and the maximum amount of chlorine that could be generated in a volume of water? Imagine that I have a black 50 gallon drum filled with water containing...

    TFP Water Balance Adviser

So I was thinking back to the time before I found this site. Back then I foolishly decided to use Aqua Chem's "Dip Click and Swim" adviser once or twice before I saw the light. It allows you to enter the current test strip readings and advises you what you need to buy and add to get your water...

My pool won't let me use my SWG!

So this all began on April 4th. There was a short heatwave of 80F for a week or so I got the bright idea to open the pool. The water actually got up to 68F which is bearable for my crazy kids. I found an empty bottle of bleach under the deck which got me thinking about not wanting to deal...

Hayward S160T Sand filter not filtering properly?

I am having some issues with my sand filter's performance. The symptoms are: - Pressure never goes above 18 PSI. It starts at 12 PSI after back washing. - A dense jet of fine dark brown dirt comes out of the return when switching the pump from low to high after a day of run time on low. -...

    1.5" FPT x 1.5" MPT x 0.75" MHT Wye or Tee?

Does anyone know where I can find a 1.5" FPT x 1.5" MPT x 0.75 MHT Wye or Tee? Do they exist or do I need to Frankenstein a bunch of fittings and adapters together to plumb a garden hose into my return?

Dirt from return when switching pump from low to high?

So this morning I switched the pump from low to high to do some vacuuming and immediately fine brown dirt started coming out of the return. In horror I turned it off immediately. I just replaced the gasket in the multi-port last year. What could be causing this?

Start-up chemistry adjustment order with SWG

Season's greetings fellow TFP members! (Pool season that is!) I've decided to go with a SWG this year and have everything hooked up and have performed my first full water chemistry test: FC: 5 (Had some Trichlor pucks in a floater all winter) CC: 0 pH: 7 (Goal = 7.5) TA: 40 (Goal = 70)...

    Hose types and sizes?

So I'm getting a new Pentair Dynamo pump this year and am starting to wonder about the flexible hoses that were originally on the old pump and filter. Starting at the skimmer there is a 3 foot, 1 1/4" flexible hose like this: From the pump there's a semi-rigid hose which barely fits onto...

Pump sizing and selection - 16k gal AGP

What would be the right size pump for a 16k gal AGP? The old pump is making a horrid whining/grinding noise and there is water trickling out of where the shaft enters the wet side. Does anyone have any recommendations on inexpensive but still reliable brands/models? (Seems like the Pentair...

SWG selection? Intellichlor IC15 vs Intex

I've decided I want to go with a SWG this summer. I don't have a whole lot of money to invest in the project up front. I only have a 16,000 pool. I am wondering what the difference would be between the Intex systems and the Pentair Intellichlor IC15. I've noticed Walmart sells two different...

    Apple Bobbing / Germs

So I'm having a Halloween party in a few days and am planning on having guests bob for apples out of a tub. The tap water here has 1.5ppm FC. This doesn't seem like enough to kill germs fast enough to prevent them from spreading from guest to guest. What would be a safe FC that would kill...

Lost a lot of water, new levels.

So this morning I wake up to go look at my sparkling pool and to my horror the water level was below the return outlet! The pump was still running and had been for several hours. Luckily it didn't burn up because there was some leftover water in the pump basket which was almost boiling! I...
