Replacement clamp ring for Jandy pool filter

After servicing my pool filter (Jandy CL460, cartridge filter), I decided to order a new tank clamp ring, since the original one was 16 years old. So, I ordered this Zodiac replacement part (R0357400) from Amazon. I have removed and reinstalled the original clamp ring that came with my filter...

Adding too much chlorine at one time?

Awhile back, I saw a reply that was in the middle of a thread on this forum, where someone commented on the idea of adding extra amounts of liquid chlorine so that you don't have to do it every day. I don't remember where it was, but the argument went something like this: a person was saying...

    CYA going down

I use bleach and muriatic acid to maintain my pool. I have a chlorine tablet feeder that I can use if I will be away for an extended period, but I haven't used any tabs for almost a year. I follow the TFP guidelines for keeping a proper FC/CYA ratio. The last time I measured the CYA was last...

    Good and bad dissolved solids

I follow the TFP pool maintenance guidelines and use liquid chlorine and muriatic acid. I do my own water testing but occasionally go to Leslie’s for some tests I can’t do. Today they said my TDS was 3600. They said that was too high and I should partially drain and refill my pool. I last...

    CYA decreasing over time?

I normally maintain my pool with liquid chlorine and muriatic acid. I keep my FC level at the desired percentage of CYA, using the TFP guidelines. Have had no algae problems since I began using this method. I have an in-line chlorinator that uses 3" tri-chlor tabs, but I only use it for a few...

    pool light trips GFCI

Just discovered that my under water swimming pool light has started tripping the GFCI in my Jandy Power panel. I assume some current leakage has developed. It was installed about 14 years ago, so I guess an under water current leakage was inevitable. I will have to call a pool guy to deal with...

    Relay for Jandy power panel

I have a Jandy 6613 power control panel for my pool equipment. It is the model RS6, which can support 6 different relay control circuits. It was installed with only 5 relays, which are all being used for various pool equipment. The location where the 6th relay would go is empty. I want to order...

    pH rising due to aeration?

I have seen posts on TFP saying that using bleach will usually not raise your pH, but that using tri-chlor tabs will usually lower pH (because they are so acidic) making it necessary to add pH increaser to counteract this. My experience has been the opposite. Back when I was using Tri-Chlor...

    How high can CYA go?

I normally use bleach to chlorinate my pool, but will occasionally use my in-line chlorinator with tri-chlor tabs, only when I am going to be away for a week or more. So my CYA level will go up only when I am away, typically about 7 PPM for each week that I have to use the chlorinator. I don't...

    FAS-DPD FC test inconsistencies

I'm starting a new post on this because one of my previous posts concerned discrepancies in the FAS-DPD FC test, using two different bottles of R-0871 reagent, one of which was probably too old. This post concerns discrepancies in the test, using the same bottle of R-0871, which has an...

How the TFPC method eliminated my pool maintenance stress

I am so glad I discovered the TFP site, and am grateful for all the knowledge contributed by the members. I have yet to see a book that explains everything I've learned about pool chemistry from this site. I knew that I was not getting a straight or consistent story from the pool stores, and for...

    Muriatic acid, pH, and TA

I use bleach to chlorinate my pool, and I find that I have to add a little acid once or twice a week, as the pH rises. People in these forums have said that bleach should not be raising the pH very much, but I think in my case, it may be due to aeration, since my attached spa has a waterfall...

    inconsistencies in FAS-DPD FC readings

I have been using the Taylor FAS-DPD kit for my chlorine testing. I use bleach to add chlorine. I have been using the 0.75 oz bottle of reagent R-0871 that came with my Taylor test kit. I'm trying to keep my FC in the range 4 to 6, since my CYA is 50. Recently my CYA was 4.0 in the morning. I...

    Bubble bath in spa?

In the past, I sometimes entertained guests, on a special occasion, by adding bubble bath to my spa. It is a 500 gallon spa attached to the pool, so once the spa is off, all its water gets re-mixed with the pool water (16000 gal). I would pour a whole bottle of Mr. Bubble in the spa while it is...

Effect of whole house water filter on pool water

I have a question for ChemGeek or anyone with chemistry knowledge. I have a whole-house water conditioning system, and the water to fill my pool comes through this system. A few months ago I drained and refilled the pool (to get rid of high CYA), and all the fill water also passed through this...

Question about FAS-DPD test for CC

I have a question about the FAS-DPD combined chlorine (CC) test, in the Taylor kit. I'm using the sample size where each drop represents 0.2 ppm of chlorine. I did the FC test first, and the pink color completely disappeared after 18 drops, indicating the FC is 3.6 ppm. Then I added 5 drops of...

best method for regular chlorine dosage

I recently drained and refilled my 16000 gal outdoor (inground, gunite/plaster) pool, due to high CYA (300 ppm), high TDS (3700) and high phosphates (600). Immediately after refilling, my TDS is now 450, and phosphates is 0. My CH level is now 210. After refilling, I added enough CYA to get a...

    Measuring CC

My DPD test kit can measure free chlorine (FC) and total chlorine (TC). The difference is supposed to be combined chlorine (CC). It is hard to tell exactly what the difference is between the FC and TC readings. Is there a more accurate way to measure CC directly?
