Back to SWG?

We're upsizing our AGP and I'm contemplating going back to SWG. On our 12' we used the Intex SWG and it seemed great until it stopped working. I replaced the plates twice and it never seemed to produce the way it did when new. It's entirely possible that it was operator error but I digress. I've since learned about the extra chemistry things to watch out for as well as the routine maintenance of the plates but I maintain, it just never seemed to work as well as from new.

The real hesitation I have with going back to SWG is that the first pool really deteriorated rapidly and I feel like the salt water was to blame. We ended up taking the pool down in 2022 because I noticed one of the connectors was completely rusted out at the top on both sides. Upon disassembly of the pool I discovered that the entire pool was virtually freestanding! So many of the connections were rusted right out or just barely hanging on.

I plan to install the "gap covers" on this new pool so that will minimize splash out and in turn minimize water contact with the pipes AND I'll be pre-coating the connection points with an extra layer or two of rust paint but I'm still hesitant. I know many of you here use SWG without issue and I wonder if you've maybe got some extra maintenance steps that you take like rinsing the pipes after splashing? I did enjoy the hands free SWG life and the soft water but also, adding a cup of Chlorine each day was pretty easy too. Thing is, this pool is considerably larger so that "cup of chlorine" could be 2 or 3 cups a day which will start to add up. That said, it could be a moot point since I'd likely need to run an SWG longer (so run the pump longer) and with electricity prices as they are around here these days maybe chlorine would be cheaper!

So, moisture causes rust. If you take the extra steps you’ve mentioned and most importantly, insure that moisture doesn’t get trapped anywhere in contact with the frame, it’s totally up to you on the type of maintenance you want to perform.

I literally ran an Intex salt water combo pump filter for years before it finally died. Maintaining water chemistry to control scale and not over-cleaning the plates is key to long life.

I wonder if I just got "lucky" my first season with the SWG that it ran so well. I defintiely did not know about the added chemistry things to watch for when I first installed it. However, after replacing the plates AND being educated on said chemistry it really underperformed. Bad plates?

My advice is to be sure to coat any scratches that occur during assembly with rustoleum. I do believe that the og intex & bestway frame pools available in the 2000’s - early 2010’s were superior to those that can be purchased today in regards to their metal composition & their coatings. There was really no killing them!
The gap covers are a great idea no matter what sanitation method you choose as Kelly said - moisture is the enemy of metal.

For the swcg- you want one that is rated for at least 2x’s your pool’s volume.
This is especially important with the intex units as they can only run 11/12 hours a day for their normal schedule.
The largest intex swcg unit is rated for 15k gal.
If your new pool is larger than 7-8k gallons you might want to run two intex units or look for a different brand “permanent type” that has a larger output.

I love the intex units for what they are (simple, built in timer, cheapish) but they do have their limitations.
Their prices have come back down a bit making them an attractive option again for many.

Perhaps you got a dud with your replacement cell or you had nascent algae that was consuming some of your fc. Both are common occurrences.
Both can be ruled out/confirmed with testing.

I got lucky for 6.5 years because my SWG over produced the first week and was stoopid clear. I matched that deep shade of purple/green on the guess strip from that moment on and had my first issue (swamp) when the cell died and I knew no more than when I first got the pool.
