Hi Everyone,

First post, long time pool user but just inherited my first pool in 2022 when we moved into our current house. Had some questions that I'm hoping the experts here can answer for me.

Q1) What should be the difference in pressure (relative) be when the sand filter valve is in the "filter" position versus the "recirculate" position?

Q2) Can the difference in pressure in Q1 be used to determine "Total Dynamic Head" (TDH) of all the piping?

Q3) Can TDH be properly calculated if this is a vacuum leak on the return side?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

1) Depends on the filter make/model. Some will read 0 pressure when in recirculate while others will read a lower pressure than when in filter mode.

2) No. But you can determine the head loss from the filter forward with just the filter pressure in filter mode but that does not include anything on the suction side of the pump and/or between the pump and filter.

3) Depends on how bad the leak is. If it is a little air in the pump basket, then it shouldn't mater that much. However, if the leak is so bad the pump loses prime, then that is a big issue.

Why do you care about TDH anyway? If the desire is to calculate turnover, you should read this:
