Does this mean that my Jandy Heat Pump Compressor is dead?

My Jandy JE2000T heat pump is 5 years and 1 month old (compressor warranty is 5 years).

It worked perfectly until last week-- now it runs, but doesn't heat the water (water flows through fine, and the fan runs, and the display works, etc..., just doesn't raise the temp of the water).

I had a guy out to look at it and he said my compressor is bad and sent this image. Does anyone know if the image proves that the compressor is the problem? Could it be something else? I have read that the problems I have can come from a bad capacitor or contactor, which is obviously less costly to repair.

Thanks for any help.

He is showing you on the meter that the compressor is not trying to run and draw any current.

It has voltage so the contactor is fine and he disconnected the capacitor.

Thank you for your help with this.

In my area, getting someone to install a new heater/heat pump is easy, but getting someone to even look at a broken one is nearly impossible.

Just trying to make sure that the compressor is actually the problem before I replace the whole thing.

I may go with a gas heater this time-- grass is always greener on the other side....

I always recommend that folks get whichever HP they have local service for. Many companies install them and do not service them which leaves the customer stranded when it breaks.

You are right about that.

Thanks for taking the time to look at it and reply.

I have had two independent folks test it out, both conclude that the compressor is broken-- part of the issue here is that I didn't really trust the first person. I don't know him that well, and I just kinda got the impression he was trying to make a quick sale. He did offer to replace the compressor, but the cost is such that it probably makes more sense to buy new.

I'll throw some shade on Jandy here for anyone who might look at this in the future. This Jandy heat pump failed basically at 5 years. I'm not perfect, but I take care of my pool like some people take care of a classic car. I do as much as I can myself and try to do it to a high standard. If their HP compressors fail at 5 years with someone doing their best to take care of it... caveat emptor

I'm going to go gas this time if I have the capacity in my existing gas lines. It'll be interesting to compare the real costs of operating them.

This season I had a compressor fail on a 6 year old Trane AC unit that has a 10 year warranty.

Trane is covering the cost for the $1500 compressor and I still have to pay $1500 in labor to install it. Replacement of the entire unit would be about $6,000 so worth doing with 4 years remaining on the warranty.

I have two other Trane units that have gone 10+ years before their coils popped a leak.

Jandy should give 10 year warranties like the some AC manufacturers do.
