Hello all! I have a question about chlorine loss during the slam procedure. Based on my tests and losing 12 parts per million of chlorine in a 4-Hour time period. Wanting to know if this is normal for a cloudy somewhat green pool that I'm trying to recover. I am using the fas/dpd test and am I correct that if I tested for 14 parts per million that it would take 28 drops of the reagent to turn the sample clear again? 10ml test. Just seems like a lot of chlorine loss in a short amount of time.

CYA 35
PH 7.3
Slamming at 14 parts per million

Thank you for any advice offered by the way I am a new pool owner and trying to figure all this out.

Possible. But on the extreme side. It may be suggesting your CYA is lower than you tested. But for now, keep maintaining SLAM FC and see if it improves.

Yeah, that's pretty extreme but I still think you are doing everything correctly.

Stick with it. That chlorine loss should reduce pretty drastically as it does it's job.........I suggest you test and replenish every 4 hours.......the loss should slow significantly. You are doing everything OK!

Okay I can't tell you how much I appreciate your time and input. I am still on my first day of Slam and I'm having to add 12 to 13 parts per million every 4 hours so far on this first day of slamming.

Good afternoon to all! A follow-up on the slam progress on my swimming pool. It has been 7 days since I've begun the slam process. I have achieved less than one part per million or less of chlorine loss overnight. My chlorine demand has diminished greatly. However my pool although blue is still cloudy and I can only see about 12 in down. Just looking for some advice on if continued slam is appropriate or if I should try clarifiers or something else etc? Thank you for your time and responding to my post please know it is greatly appreciated.

Sand filters take the longest to clear a SLAMmed pool.

You can try to add DE to the filter to help (use ONLY pool DE).

Thank you both very much for your reply they are greatly appreciated.

I've been back washing when the pressure is 25% over Baseline.

When I measure cya the dot disappeared just a little bit above the 40 mark.

I've been replenishing during the day since demand has greatly dropped. Demand is typically 3ppm per application every 6 hours. The past two overnights have resulted in a loss of 0ppm on one night and .5ppm the next night.

I began using DE pool grade 2 days ago. Adding enough mixed with 10 parts of water to raise the Baseline pressure on the pump buy 1 PSI

Those are all textbook procedures......nice work.

I would think you are nearing the end of the SLAM and only needing clear water to meet the criteria for finishing the SLAM.

The clarity of your water should get a little better each day you continue the SLAM. Can you observe that to be the case?

Hello Duraleigh. Thank you for your words of encouragement. Recently bought a new home for my wife and I that came with a pool. I've never owned a pool and this site and its members and staff are quite the resource. I see you are an administrator on the site and it is greatly appreciated that you would take the time for a new user like me. You must be a very generous person. Wish I could buy you a drink somewhere!

I do follow directions well and can I be taught new tricks! I can't say I've seen much improvement in the water over the past 3 days. Only been able to see down about 12 in or so for a couple days straight now. Filter is running 24 hours a day and the pool is definitely a pretty blue but by no means can see the bottom.

I've been able to stay focused on the slam process and resist trying clarifiers or anything else! Lol

I can't see the bottom so I can't tell you if there's any solids. But I don't think so as my skimmer baskets and pump baskets after vacuuming to waste are barely filled with just a few leaves. Honestly not much at all. I used to see plumes of cloudiness grow as I vacuumed in the past and brushed and I do not see that anymore. Brushing and vacuuming the pool doesn't seem to change the color of the pool anymore.

I think that's all good news. You seem to have a particularly stubborn pool but I would suggest you continue the SLAM by running the pump 24/7 and replenishing the FC to SLAM level

Vacuuming the pool at this point may not be very productive but brushing the sides every 2-3 of days may be of benefit. Have you checked the level of sand in the filter? Generally, you should be about 2/3 full of sand.

The SLAM works.......without tricks and gimmicks. You might consider daily pictures of your water so you can see even small progress towards clarity.

Okay I will continue the slam process and brush the sides. The sand filter is on its third year of a new installation and I have not checked the level inside it. Would you recommend I shut the pool down and I guess you remove the selector valve off the top to look inside? Any advice on the process or where I can find that information on the website would be welcomed. I will also continue to post updates. Thank you again.

Your filter manufacturer likely has online info as to the correct level of sand. If your pool doesn't clear in the next few days, you must assume there is something not working right. having the sand at the right level needs to be checked. Send a pic of the pump and filter and we'll show you how to open it.

It can (but not always) be a big job so don't do it just yet

Okay thank you very much. I did notice an improvement today on the clarity of the water and then I brush the sides and it got cloudy again.

Maintaining 15ppm FC .5PPM CC (last test) with a cya-39.

I found the owner's manual for my swimming pool including the filter and it looks pretty straightforward job to remove the head. I have included pictures. Interestingly enough the manual does not say how high to fill it inside. All I can find is capacity is 300 lb. Not sure if that is what should be put in or just the maximum capacity?

I could just ever so vaguely make out the bottom of the pool before I brushed it today!

Just fyi. When we bought the house at the end of summer last year the pool was crystal clear and they had been using it for the past 2 years. It got away from us through our transition from our old home to our new home and it was closed cloudy. But with the recommended closing chemicals

Since the dot on your CYA is disappearing right above 40, treat your CYA as if it's 40, which makes the SLAM level 16. The CYA test isn't linear, so you can't interpolate in between gradations. If you raise your chorine level to 16, it should go a little faster.

Good evening Deb 04! I am so thankful for the ongoing support of the members of this forum, thank you so much for your reply this evening. It couldn't come at a better time as I was doing my test and chlorination just as your notification came through. I'm trying to follow exactly what the wealth of experience of this community has recommended as I go through this process. If I'm being honest I thought the same thing that I'm so close to 40 maybe I should just go up 1ppm. But I just stuck with pool math, but I'm glad you expressed your opinion and took the time to do so. I've just raised my slam level to 16 PPM as of 20 minutes ago and we will keep on keeping on! Best regards and have a great evening.🙏
