Hello,
This is a great Forum !! Thank you for the add. I've been reading for days, there is tons of great information here. Im very thankful for finding it.
I was not able to find a discussion on the question I have. First time pool owner , new instal. Opened pool up last week. My contractor did not provide me with a off on switch beside my Pump/swg. I've been having to use the breaker. single breaker to turn the pump and SWG. I am getting one installed. (for safety and convenience).
But unit that is done..
Im wondering if using the breaker will have any adverse affects on my SWG and the readings its producing ?
Should I be turning off the SWG at the SWG box before I turn off the main breaker to turn off the pump?
I notice that the SWG produces a salt reading and other diagnostics when the SWG box switch is in the off position. Meaning that the electric is still there to make the diagnostics work.
I don't want to ruin this expensive unit , any information or feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thank you ,
Heidi

Welcome to TFP.

Most breakers are not made to be switched on and off many times. It can wear out the breaker and lead to the breaker tripping prematurely.

Turning the power on and off to the Aquarite SWG will not damage it in any way.

What model pump are we discussing?

THERE ARE SPECIAL UL TEST REQUIREMENTS FOR 120V AND 277V BREAKERS FOR THE SWITCHING AND PROTECTION OF FLUORESCENT LAMP LOADS.

THESE TEST REQUIREMENTS ARE IN ADDITION TO THE STANDARD BREAKER REQUIREMENTS AND ARE DESCRIBED IN UL489 SECTION 32.

THIS TEST HAS AN ENDURANCE REQUIREMENT OF 3001 OPERATIONS WITH TEMPERATURE TESTS AT VARIOUS PRESCRIBED INTERVALS.

NEMA AB3 SECTION 2.3.4 STATES: "SWITCHING DUTY" (SWD) CIRCUIT BREAKERS RATED 15 OR 20 AMPS ARE
INTENDED TO SWITCH 277 VOLTS OR LESS FLUORESCENT LIGHTING LOADS ON A REGULAR BASIS.

THESE BREAKERS ARE MARKED " SWD". OUR RESIDENTIAL TYPE BR AND INDUSTRIAL QUICKLAG TYPES HQP, QPHW, QHPX, QHPW, BAB, QBHW, HBAX, QC, QCHW, QHCX, QHCW 1 POLE 15 AND 20 AMP ARE TESTED AND MARKED "SWD".

THE 1 POLE 120VAC GB, GC, AND THE 1 POLE 277VAC GHB, GHBS, GHC, AND EHD BREAKERS ARE ALSO TESTED, RATED AND MARKED "SWD".

THESE BREAKERS ARE ALL UL LISTED AND HAVE NAMEPLATES MARKED "SWD" AS REQUIRED BY THE NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE NEC 240-83D.

Which Square D or Schneider Electric circuit breakers have SWD (Switch-Duty) ratings?
Product Line:
Circuit Breakers

Resolution:
Per UL 489, the switch duty rating label (SWD) may be applied to single pole, 15 and 20 A circuit breakers, 347 Vac or less that pass the special SWD test requirements.

The SWD rating applies to breakers used for regularly switching fluorescent lights.

While SWD may be applied to multiple pole breakers, Schneider only offers the SWD rating on the single pole circuit breakers as listed below

Circuit breakers can be rated for switching duty for lighting circuits.

Circuit breakers applied in 120V or 277V fluorescent lighting circuits must be marked SWD or HID.

SWD stands for Switching Duty.

HID signifies rated for High Intensity Discharge lighting.

The UL489 Standard for MCBs states that an SWD circuit breaker can be rated up to 20A, no more.

HID breakers are rated up to 50A.

Thanks for the response.

Its a hayward Super Pump High Efficiency 1.10 Total HP

Is the pump on a GFCI breaker as required by code?

If so, trip the breaker using the GFCI test button and not the lever to turn it off.

If not, have the electrician install a GFCI CB when he installs the pump switch.
