60's Coke Machine Disaster!

Jim when was the last time you had a non-exploded soda ? Has it been days or months ?

At least you didn't have a bunch of those super hard to get small cokes that used to cost $.05.
Chris,

My coke machine only dispenses a soda, if you put in a Nickle, just like it did in the 60's.. It will also except dimes and quarters and give you the correct change.

Unfortunately, buying the sodas, to put in the machine, costs me between $1.00 and $2.00 each depending on the brand.

I tell my wife we will make it up in 'volume'...

Dude,

My wife used the coke machine some time the day before, and there was no sign of anything wrong. The next day when my wife tried to use it, it had already exploded..

Jim R.
Oh, so it IS her fault.
Don't tell her I said so. No reason for her to visit AZ to set me straight. :drown:

I hate that happened but look on the bright side, at least you don’t have carpet!
We had an old can one and had some beer in it - that made a stinky ol mess!
We used “slugs” in it instead of money.

I'm not spending $2.00 a bottle, I'm SAVING 5 cents (or something like that)

Have you ever looked into bottling your own? Seriously.

You can get a counter pressure filler and capping machine fairly cheaply. I used to do it with beer if I wanted to bottle something off of a keg I made instead of bottle conditioning.

I never tried it with soda, but I assume it would work the same. It is also dirt cheap to make your own soda. I used to make my own in a 5 gallon corny keg. It's nice because I could make it less sweet as well as add things like extra flavors.

I homebrewed like 15 or more years ago, but haven't in a long time.

A while back, I was given an old kegorator by my wife's homebrewing uncle. I finally got it set up late in the fall last year, but since we have a teenager in the house, it was requested (by my wife) that I not have beer on tap.

So, I can still buy Corny kegs of Diet Pepsi from the local distributor so I have a keg of that on tap, and I have a 5 gallon keg of seltzer water on tap. We bought some syrups for making Italian Sodas, but often I just put a couple drops of lemon or lime extract in a glass with the bubbly water. I did order some minerals the other day, so I am going to make the seltzer water into club soda, so I can make mojitos for the pool this summer!

I've also done some experimenting with other flavors for the carbonated water; ordered some Hopzoil to make hoppy bubbly water. That stands in nicely enough for when I want a beer-ish experience but want to avoid so much alcohol/calories. There's a local brewery that bottles carbonated hoppy water, but it's nearly the same price as a 6-pack of real beer. I also made a packet of Kool-Aid in a 2-liter bottle and carbonated that. That was a hit with the kids!

15 years or so is about the same time period for me. I still have all of my old equipment. I had just started full mash brews (with a lot of manual work, not the fancy automated set ups) and now they do the whole gran bag thing too.

I was going to do corny kegs of soda water, but we have a soda stream that makes it easy to make 1l bottes. I like to use tonic syrups to make my own tonic water. Sometimes I just drink the tonic, other times gin gets introduced.

I was recently given a two line chiller plate for a jockey box. I already have a bunch of taps laying around. I may start brewing again, even if only extract, and running them through a jockey box for parties.

Now that our kids are just about out of the house, we may remodel the downstairs family room into less couches more games and a bar. If that is the case I may convert a small chest freezer into a keg fridge.

Yeah, I had a decent sized fully manual setup made out of some old Kegs. Was starting to experiment with double-brews (using the mash twice to produce a dense beer and a light beer) and/or simply brewing two beers in the same day with two kettles, etc because I figured I'd drug it all out anyway.

But at some point, I hadn't done it for a long time and decided that I had too many projects (the beer stuff, plus a couple fix up and sell cars) and home stuff that needed done, so I sold the beer stuff and extra cars. I think the motorcycle left after this, too.

Kinda wish I'd held onto the beer stuff! And the motorcycle.

I need to make plans to brew with wife's uncle or something.

I have a converted keg as well. I also used two turkey fryers as pots.

Funny thing is I use an immersion coil to chill my wort to pitching temps. Back when I was brewing I did not have a pool. I used to just run a garden hose through it, and lament about wasting all of that water.

Now I can just run my pool water through it, cooling and wort and (minimally) heating my pool - its a win-win

I have a 60's room with an old Coke machine, Pin Ball machine, old Juke Box, etc..

Well, unknown to us, the coke machine froze up and this is the result... :(

What a mess...
