60's Coke Machine Disaster!

I think you need to wire in a freeze protection circuit during the repair.

The refrigerant compressor is stronger then you would think. One more thing they don't build like they used to.

Allen,

I've had the coke machine for over 30 years and it never froze up before..

I suspect that the fan quit, but won't know until I remove all the broken glass, and clean things up so that I don't stick to everything I touch.. :mrgreen:

Like I needed another project... :(

What do you mean "Most Likely" ??? I'm pretty sure that is "most likely" a fact... :mrgreen:

I would have assumed that when the liquid froze it would have just blown the cap off the bottles.. In some cases that is what happened, but about half the bottle just blew apart. :(

That is a common occurrence in bizjets parked outside in the winter. Crews without experience operating in freezing weather don't think to remove all liquid refreshments that may freeze. Cleanup can be a real pain in a small metal tube outside in freezing weather.

Definitely operator error ... leave that poor compressor alone, it was just doing it's job!!

The beautiful part is that, if you can find the right spare parts, those old refrigerators are stupid-simple to fix. You can beat them with a telephone pole and they'll still work. Nowadays, if you even give a modern fridge the side-eye, it'll shutdown and refuse to work ...

It’s a working hypothesis.

The other hypotheses are:

1) The pressure in the machine suddenly dropped to zero for some reason.

2) Something caused the machine to vibrate and the bottles all got shook up.

Maybe a tornado caused low pressure and also caused the machine to get banged around a lot?

3) Hydrofluoric acid spilled on the bottles and caused the glass to get too thin.

4) Someone put Mentos into the bottles to make them fizz.

5) Maybe the machine got too hot and the Coke boiled and exploded from the pressure?
