This old pool | odd skimmer or just dated

Hey Gang- Hope everyone is doing well…. Question of if this pool is just old or the wrong plumbing choice for a concrete inground pool. I’m noticing the skimmer throat is 100% plastic vs most/all pools I see have an opening vs this notch/box look…

Adding to the return fittings that match up to fittings used on liner pools.

I’m asking if this style skimmer was ever common in pools without a liner? No clue how old the pool is. Older pics for reference.

I can't directly answer your question, but...

Without an operating weir door, that is just a hole in the side of your pool... :mrgreen:

It is hard to tell for sure, but does your skimmer have a weir door???

You are correct! No doors on either skimmer.

The weir door is what make a skimmer....."Skim"..

If your pool is in screen-room it is not a huge deal, if not, it means your skimming action is about 50% of what it should be.

They make universal weir doors that are held in place by spring loaded pins..

With a smile and a little optimism, I decided to tackle this skimmer issue with a replacement. I’ve prepped for weeks and jumped in today. Couple of observations…

8” terra-cotta tile. Seems like an odd size. At least when I search ’pool tile’ 6” seems to be the new norm. I’m sure anything goes, but it’s another ‘anomaly’ to me. Maybe these aren’t even pool tiles….

Lack of wide-mouth skimmer opening. Currently it’s just an opening. Q: Should I create a wide-mouth opening or leave as-is?

Traditional skimmer has tile opening that meets the skimmer. Mine had an extension of plastic the entire way. Like a liner pool would. Maybe that’s due to the way they pour the slabs for the deck.

As you can see the existing skimmer was not entombed and concrete. It has 3.5” around the top of the skimmer. Which this has me thinking…. Since it’s likely, the deck slabs will continue to move by. Q: should entomb the new skimmer to the pool shell like a normal skimmer replacement , or do I need to take an alternative approach being a poured slab/deck..? (* pool is on a sandy hill in FL, it’s gonna have movement. I have a few cracks etc.. )

Appreciate any thoughts/feedback as I’d like to wrap these skimmers up soon, please… thank you!!

I’m using SP1082 for replacements.
