I want to setup a sub panel to run my pool equipment. For now, all the equipment that I'll have is a 1.5HP Hayward Matrix 2-speed pump, a Aquatrol SWG, a Hayward Elite low-voltage pool light, and a convenience outlet. But in the future I want to add an electric heat pump that will keep my water in the 85-90 degree range from May - September. I haven't really completed much research yet on the size of heat pump that I'll need. I was considering running a 60 amp circuit from my main to the sub panel. It will be about 55 ft from main to the sub. Will that be enough to run most heat pumps and my other equipment?

Once you know the heat pump amperage requirement for the HP you are getting, you can determine the amps needed for the subpanel.

What if you run this 60 amp circuit and later find you need an 80 amp circuit to support your HP, pump and other equipment?

Don't put the cart before the horse.
Determine the exact needs of the heat pump first.

In my opinion, a # 4 AWG copper wire (75 C rated) with an 80 amp breaker should be good for the supply for the subpanel.

You can use # 3 AWG with a 100 amp breaker if you want a little bit of extra capacity like if you ever replace the pump with a 3 hp model.

Note: Verify all design plans with a licensed electrician before making any final plans.

The breaker for the heat pump in the subpanel should be a 50 amp breaker for a 140,000 btu/hr heat pump.

Pump.....11 amps
Heat pump 33 amps. (6,400 watts = 27.83 amps at 230 volts.).
Aquatrol 2 amps.
Lights 3 amps.
Outlet 15 amps.
Total = 64 amps.
Minimum Breaker = 80 amps.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent heatpump for a 15x26 ~10k gallon ABG? I'm near Raleigh, NC, so the winters are mild, and I'd like to extend the swimming season from May - Sept.

Aquacal, Raypak or Pentair Ultratemp should be good.

I highly recommended that you get a local Authorized dealer to install.

I would choose based on the local Authorized dealer vs. the manufacturer.

If you have an issue and there is no authorized local dealer, you might have trouble getting service.
