I am going to start keeping a log of my CYA here to determine what if anything is up. I have gone and bought the expensive CYA from Doheny.

CYA is 70. I am going to bump it up to 80 today and then measure over the next several weeks.

Kato,

I just bought some CYA from Doheny...

I too felt that my cheap CYA was not lasting as long as it should.. But, have no data to prove it.. :(

This will be my first year with Doheny CYA, so it will be interesting to see if their CYA is any better than what I was buying before.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I have used the Puritech stuff, and the RX Clear in the past. Both seemed to raise my CYA but the CYA seemed to disappear very quickly

So someone reported that the Doheny stuff is better so I bought 50lbs of it and will be running a test. I have a sock dangling right now. Will measure in 2 days an post again. Should be around 80ppm.

I will then measure and report back on a semi regular basis.

Ok CYA is 80. Ideal level for my pool for this time of year. Let’s measure again in a few weeks. I will track rainfall to make sure we dont lose water through the auto drain.

So 2.5” of rain yesterday. Lost about 1” through the overflow. Pool is also at least an inch higher than normal. Tested CYA and got 70. Which I will attribute to some dilution and loss of water. Will wait a few days and bump back up to 80. FC is a little low so need to go pick some up and add that first. Also used the opportunity to clean the dinky little filter.

CYA was maybe a tad under 70, but let’s call it 70 for now. No rain since the last test. So adding some CYA now as we are getting full sun. I would like to have it around 80-90 and form a new baseline. Will measure again on Sunday or Monday and we will start tracking from there.

As a side note, pool is now hitting 88 degrees so I am not sure how that factors into degradation.

Crud, I cant remember if I added any CYA or not. Going to start logging additions in pool math from now on.

Anyway no rain, and CH and Salt is rising so no leak. CYA is 70

Ok, logged it in PoolMath and here. Adding 2.5lbs of CYA right now. Should take my CYA to between 80-90 which should be ideal for this time of year. Pool is getting full sun all day, and current pool temp is 88.5 degrees. Probably will hit 90 today.

Also no measurable rain in the several weeks.

Ok, got some rain the other day, but not enough to reach the auto drain. Been keeping pool level low to protect against rain.

Measure today. Let’s call it 80. Now let’s see how fast it deteriorates. Not supposed to get any rain for the next week so let’s see.

Just an update. It has been raining quite a bit over the last month or so which is making it a little harder to measure the effects of this new CYA.

However, just based on memory it seems like this CYA has better longevity. I still have probably used about 35lbs that I bought. However, the pool is consistently over 90 this year, and we have gotten about 12 inches of rain in the last two weeks. I tested the CYA yesterday and it was about 80, and it was probably just over 90 two weeks ago before I left.

Unfortunately I don’t have anything more scientific than this, but I still feel this is a better product. Since CYA has become much more expensive this product is now only marginally more expensive that the Amazon bought products so I might as well continue to use it.

I dont have a fancy gate style overflow. I have a 1” pipe in my skimmer that terminates in my yard a little bit like a French drain. I did put a little elbow on it to be able to raise the water level about an inch. It’s not a perfect solution as it leaks a little bit so I only get about a 1/2” of extra water. I may need to figure out a better way to seal it without it becoming permanent
