Greetings, pool aficionados,
I have a 15,000-gal fiberglass pool with Pentair cartridge filter and SWG. When I opened the pool in April 2023, I opened the cover to pristine, crystal clear water. This year, not so lucky - I’d never seen gray/brown pool water before…and the WORMS! 😱

I’ve been following the SLAM process since Friday afternoon and the progress has been terrific. This morning’s test results:

CL: 10.5 (0.5 CL loss overnight)
CC: 0.5
pH: 7.1
TA: 110
CYA: 30
CH: 240
Salt: 3300

My question: the pool passes 2/3 SLAM outcomes (< 1.0 CL loss overnight and 0.5 CC or less) but, despite being able to see the bottom of the deep end, the water hasn’t cleared (noticeable daily improvements). Is this just a matter of the filter (which I replaced with new on Saturday after filtering the gray mess for 24 hours) needing more time to clear the water? And, should I be keeping FC at 12 until that happens before letting FC fall to its standard, non-SLAM level? TIA!

Yes, your filter still needs a bit more time to collect the dead algae. Passing the OCLT is great. It would be easy to assume any live algae is dead, but I would maintain the FC of 12 until you are confident the water is crystal. Best to be safe rather than find yourself starting over in a week or two.

A key to the SLAM Process is to never take advice from Meatloaf. Keep it going until all three criteria are completely passed and you'll be set for a trouble free year.
☠️ Took me a minute on the uptake, but touché. There’s one area of life where he’s absolutely correct, but that’s another forum another time!

That’s why this site & forum are awesome, thank you for the replies! Makes perfect sense and seems absolutely obvious with hindsight. Back to 12 she goes, and time is on my side with temps dropping in the Midwest again this week.

Cheers!
